UNLABELLED: Analysis of lens changes in Marfan syndrome (MS), in addition to assessing the position of the lens itself, should include the possibility of examining its supporting and accommodative components (ciliary zonule and ciliary body), or what can be called the entire anatomical complex of the lens. Optical methods of studying the structures of the anterior segment of the eye, due to iris opacity, allow only to analyze the state of the lens within the natural or medically enlarged pupil width. Visualization of the structures located behind the iris is possible with the use of radiation

Ocular colobomas are typically located in the inferonasal quadrant and attributable to defective fetal fissure closure. Colobomas can, however, affect any part of the eye, from the eyelid to the optic nerve. We present the case of a 7-year-old girl with two retinochoroidal colobomas in an atypical temporal location, with associated other ocular defects.

OBJECTIVE: To assess fetal and neonatal eyes abnormalities and their progression during the last ZIKV outbreak and summarize learned lessons.
METHODS: A systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted by a team of obstetricians and ophthalmologists.
RESULTS: Studies reporting ocular abnormalities during the prenatal (n = 5) and postnatal (n = 24) periods were included in the analysis. In the prenatal period, the most common ocular findings were intraocular calcification cases (4/6, 66.6%) and microphthalmia (3/6, 50%). Postnatal ocular abnormalities of congenital ZIKV infection were descri

To our knowledge, this is the first report of a patient with both genetically confirmed Kabuki and Marfan syndrome demonstrating a perifoveal macular degeneration in one eye. Progressive loss of the outer retinal layers was captured and demonstrated with spectral-domain optical coherence tomography imaging. Fundus autofluorescence imaging revealed perifoveal hypoautofluorescence. The patient had initially presented with a spontaneously resolved serous-exudative retinal detachment associated with tortuous retinal vasculature and preretinal proliferative vitreoretinopathy in the other eye. BACKGROUND: A modified surgical technique of sutured scleral fixated intraocular lens (SSF-IOL) was applied in a patient with post-traumatic aniridia and aphakia.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 51-year-old man was referred to our clinic with decreased vision (finger count) in his right eye. This patient had previously undergone primary repair of the ruptured globe and pars plana vitrectomy to manage ocular trauma in the same eye. On presentation, the best corrected visual acuity in his right eye was 20/40. The slit lamp examination of his right eye revealed loss of total iris and lens. Corneal endothel

Congenital miosis and microspherophakia are rare congenital disorders of the anterior chamber that are associated with multiple other ophthalmological and systemic pathologies or disorders. Nevertheless, the association of both entities have not been described yet. We present the case of a 2-years-old patient without other relevant medical history that presented with high myopia secondary to microspherophakia and associated with congenital miosis.

Surgical correction of traumatic aniridia aims to improve the quality of vision, compartmentalize the anterior and posterior chamber, and re-establish a satisfying cosmetic appearance. Various types of prosthetic iris devices (PIDs) are available, which differ in technical difficulty of implant and design: artificial iris (AI)-intraocular lens prosthesis, endocapsular capsular tension ring-based PID, and customized AI. The choice depends on the preexisting clinical condition after severe ocular trauma and on patient functional and cosmetic expectations. This systematic review of the literature

BACKGROUND: Waardenburg syndrome (WS) is a rare genetic disorder characterized by varying degrees of sensorineural hearing loss and accumulated pigmentation in the skin, hair and iris. The syndrome is classified into four types (WS1, WS2, WS3, and WS4), each with different clinical phenotypes and underlying genetic causes. The aim of this study was to identify the pathogenic variant in a Chinese family with Waardenburg syndrome type IV.
METHODS: The patient and his parents underwent a thorough medical examination. We applied whole exome sequencing to identify the causal variant on the patient

BACKGROUND: Tissue fusion is a mechanism involved in the development of the heart, iris, genital tubercle, neural tube, and palate during embryogenesis. Failed fusion of the palatal shelves could result in cleft palate (CP), a common birth defect. Organotypic models constructed of human cells offer an opportunity to investigate developmental processes in the human. Previously, our laboratory developed an organoid model of the human palate that contains human mesenchyme and epithelial progenitor cells to study the effects of chemicals on fusion.
METHODS: Here, we developed an organoid model mo

Typically developing humans automatically synchronize their arousal levels, resulting in pupillary contagion, or spontaneous adaptation of pupil size to that of others. This phenomenon emerges in infancy and is believed to facilitate social interaction. Williams syndrome (WS) is a genetic condition characterized by a hyper-social personality and social interaction challenges. Pupillary contagion was examined in individuals with WS (n = 44), age-parallel-matched typically developing children and adults (n = 65), and infants (n = 79). Bayesian statistics were used. As a group, people with WS did

Cat Eye Syndrome (CES) is a rare genetic disease caused by the presence of a small supernumerary marker chromosome derived from chromosome 22, which results in a partial tetrasomy of 22p-22q11.21. CES is classically defined by association of iris coloboma, anal atresia, and preauricular tags or pits, with high clinical and genetic heterogeneity. We conducted an international retrospective study of patients carrying genomic gain in the 22q11.21 chromosomal region upstream from LCR22-A identified using FISH, MLPA, and/or array-CGH. We report a cohort of 43 CES cases. We highlight that the clinic

SUMMARY: This is a descriptive summary of the case of a patient with Axenfeld-Rieger syndrome associated with a congenital malformation of the iris and consequent pupillary morphological alteration of an atypical characteristic reported. This anomaly is unique in scientific literature and exhibits a peculiarity that we have called pseudoacorea: Hidden pupil. Other associated abnormal clinical findings were posterior embryotoxon, astigmatism, amblyopia, and exotropia. Diagnosis was achieved by instilling ocular mydriatics into the cul-de-sac that revealed this peculiarity. It is necessary to ma

Children with complete DiGeorge anomaly (cDGA) have congenital athymia, resulting in severe T cell immunodeficiency and susceptibility to a broad range of infections. We report the clinical course, immunologic phenotypes, treatment, and outcomes of three cases of disseminated nontuberculous mycobacterial infections (NTM) in patients with cDGA who underwent cultured thymus tissue implantation (CTTI). Two patients were diagnosed with Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) and one patient with Mycobacterium kansasii. All three patients required protracted therapy with multiple antimycobacterial agents

Axenfeld-Rieger syndrome (ARS) is a rare congenital disease that is primarily characterized by ocular anterior segment anomalies but is also associated with craniofacial, dental, cardiac, and neurologic abnormalities. Over half of cases are linked with autosomal dominant mutations in either FOXC1 or PITX2, which reflects the molecular role of these genes in regulating neural crest cell contributions to the eye, face, and heart. Within the eye, ARS is classically defined as the combination of posterior embryotoxon with iris bridging strands (Axenfeld anomaly) and iris hypoplasia causing corecto

Background: Mowat-Wilson syndrome (MWS) is extremely rare multisystemic autosomal dominant disorder caused by mutations in the Zinc Finger E-Box Binding Homeobox 2 (ZEB2) gene. Ocular pathologies are one of the symptoms that appear in the clinical picture of MWS individuals, but not many have been described so far. Pathologies such as optic nerve or retinal epithelium atrophy, iris or optic disc coloboma as well as congenital cataracts have been most frequently described until now. Therefore, we would like to report the first case of bilateral developmental cataract in a 9-year-old girl with M
