Ectropion Uveae in neurofibromatosis type 1: a new manifestation.

Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is a rare genetic disorder with an autosomal dominant transmission and an estimated incidence of 1:2500-3500 live birth. Penetrance is virtually 100%, but the expression is highly variable and almost every organ can be affected. Diagnosis of NF1 is made with at least two of the following diagnostic criteria: six or more cafè-au-lait spots, two neurofibromas or one plexiform neurofibroma, axillary or groin freckling, optic glioma, two Lisch nodules, bone dysplasia and first-degree relative with NF1. Other ocular manifestations include orbital neurofibromas, cafè-a

Anatomic Approximation Approach to Bilateral Macrostomia Repair.

In principle, reconstruction in macrostomia requires symmetry and accurate positioning of the newly reconstructed commissure. The proper position of the new commissure can be determined by several methods. In the determination of the new commissure of bilateral cases, generally the average length of the lips or the distance from anatomical landmarks other than the lips, such as the pupils or tragi, has been used. A new approach was reported by Tse et al in 2018: the anatomic approximation approach. Macrostomia repair refers to anatomical landmarks in the lips to determine the new commissure. T

Nonsense suppression induced readthrough of a novel PAX6 mutation in patient-derived cells of congenital aniridia.

BACKGROUND: Congenital aniridia is a severe ocular abnormality characterized by incomplete formation of the iris and many other ocular complications. Most cases are caused by the paired box 6 (PAX6) gene mutations generating premature termination codons (PTCs). METHODS: Ophthalmic examination was performed on a Chinese pedigree with congenital aniridia. The mutation was identified by targeted next-generation sequencing. Nonsense suppression therapy was applied on patient-derived lymphocytes. The PAX6 expression was assayed by real-time polymerase chain reaction and Western blot. RESULTS: Com

European overview of current practice of fetal imaging by pediatric radiologists: a new task force is launched.

A new task force dedicated to prenatal imaging was created in 2018 by the European Society of Pediatric Radiology. In order to establish a network of European prenatal imaging practice, we sent a questionnaire to radiologists practicing prenatal imaging in Europe. The questions were related to the type of institution, the local legislation for termination of pregnancy, the type of imaging modality and the following items regarding magnetic resonance imaging (MRI): magnetic field, gestational age at which it is performed, use of maternal sedation, number of examinations per year, proportion of

Post-Market Clinical Follow-Up With the Patent Foramen Ovale Closure Device IrisFIT (Lifetech) in Patients With Stroke, Transient Ischemic Attack, or Other Thromboembolic Events.

BACKGROUND: A patent foramen ovale (PFO) has been associated with embolic strokes and transient ischemic attacks (TIAs). Catheter closure of PFO is effective in preventing recurrent events. Residual shunts and procedure or device related complications can occur, including atrial fibrillation and thrombus formation. This study examines the initial experience with a new PFO closure device, the IrisFIT PFO-Occluder (Lifetech Scientific, Shenzhen, China). METHODS: 95 patients with indications for PFO closure underwent percutaneous closure with the IrisFIT PFO-Occluder. The primary endpoint was th

The Canabrava Ring, an open ring-shaped pupil expander for cataract surgery associated with iris colobomata: a case report.

In this report, we describe a new pupil expander device that was used to obtain adequate pupil dilation and centering in a patient with an iris coloboma. Specifically, we describe the case of a patient with an iris coloboma; a Malyugin ring was inserted to facilitate dilation during phacoemulsifi-cation surgery. One of the scrolls did not engage which resulted in an uneven distribution of forces and an eccentric pupil. A Canabrava Ring was then implanted that promoted effective pupillary dilation and remained stable and effective throughout the surgical procedure.

Ocular coloboma combined with cleft lip and palate: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Ocular coloboma is an excavation of ocular structures that occurs due to abnormal fusion of the embryonic optic fissure. Further, cleft lip/palate (CL/P), a congenital midline abnormality, is caused by a defect in the fusion of the frontonasal, maxillary, and mandibular prominences. No study has reported the association between these two phenotypes in the absence of other systemic abnormalities. We present a case of ocular coloboma along with CL/P and without other neurological abnormalities. CASE PRESENTATION: A 5-year-old Asian boy presented with decreased visual acuity in his r

An Unusual Association: Total Anomalous Pulmonary Venous Return and Aortic Arch Obstruction in Patients with Cat Eye Syndrome.

Cat eye syndrome (CES) is a rare genetic defect, characterized by iris colobomas, preauricular skin tags, and anal malformations. Affecting 1 in 150,000 people, this defect is caused by duplication or triplication of the proximal long (q) arm of chromosome 22. Congenital heart disease is associated with CES. One of the most common heart defects in patients with CES is total anomalous pulmonary venous return (TAPVR). In this article, we reported patients with a rare association of concomitant TAPVR and aortic arch obstruction: one with interrupted aortic arch and the other with coarctation of t

Legius Syndrome and its Relationship with Neurofibromatosis Type 1.

Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is the most common disorder characterized by multiple café-au-lait macules. Most individuals with this autosomal dominant disorder also have other features, such as skinfold freckling, iris Lisch nodules and benign or malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumours. Legius syndrome is a less frequent autosomal dominant disorder with similar multiple café-au-lait macules and skinfold freckling. Legius syndrome is not characterized by an increased risk of tumours, and a correct diagnosis is important. In young children with a sporadic form of multiple café-au-lait macule

Spectrum of Genetic Variants Associated with Anterior Segment Dysgenesis in South Florida.

Anterior segment dysgenesis (ASD) comprises a wide spectrum of developmental conditions affecting the cornea, iris, and lens, which may be associated with abnormalities of other organs. To identify disease-causing variants, we performed exome sequencing in 24 South Florida families with ASD. We identified 12 likely causative variants in 10 families (42%), including single nucleotide or small insertion-deletion variants in B3GLCT, BMP4, CYP1B1, FOXC1, FOXE3, GJA1, PXDN, and TP63, and a large copy number variant involving PAX6. Four variants were novel. Each variant was detected only in one fami

Evaluation of ductal carcinoma in situ grade via triple-modal molecular imaging of B7-H3 expression.

BACKGROUND: Speech-language therapists are specifically trained in clinically evaluating swallowing in adults with acute stroke. Incidence of dysphagia following acute stroke is high in South Africa, and health implications can be fatal, making optimal management of this patient population crucial. However, despite training and guidelines for best practice in clinically evaluating swallowing in adults with acute stroke, there are low levels of consistency in these practice patterns. OBJECTIVE: The aim was to explore the clinical practice activities of speech-language therapists in the clinica
