Terminology of Peters' anomaly variants: Summary of histopathological findings in 6 corneas and detailed clinicopathological correlation in 2 cases.

Peters' anomaly accounts for the highest type of Anterior Segment Dysgenesis (ASD). The main features of Peters' anomaly are: congenital corneal opacity centrally, defect in the posterior stroma and absence of Descemet's membrane and the endothelium. However, this condition has wide clinical and histopathological variations in appearance, associations and severity. In this case series, we summarize 6 corneas in 5 Saudi cases of Peters' anomaly (and describe 2 in detail) with unique histopathological findings that are additional to the typical known ones, shedding some light on the nomenclature

Impaired ADAMTS9 secretion: A potential mechanism for eye defects in Peters Plus Syndrome.

Peters Plus syndrome (PPS), a congenital disorder of glycosylation, results from recessive mutations affecting the glucosyltransferase B3GLCT, leading to congenital corneal opacity and diverse extra-ocular manifestations. Together with the fucosyltransferase POFUT2, B3GLCT adds Glucoseβ1-3Fucose disaccharide to a consensus sequence in thrombospondin type 1 repeats (TSRs) of several proteins. Which of these target proteins is functionally compromised in PPS is unknown. We report here that haploinsufficiency of murine Adamts9, encoding a secreted metalloproteinase with 15 TSRs, leads to congenit

A novel characterization of posterior keratoconus using anterior segment optical coherence tomography in an infant: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Posterior keratoconus is a rare cause of a corneal opacity in an infant. It is characterized by thinning of the posterior cornea without ectasia of the anterior cornea. Imaging of this condition with anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT) has not been reported in the literature. CASE PRESENTATION: A six week old African-American male presented with a congenital corneal opacity of the right eye. He underwent an examination under anesthesia in which photography and AS-OCT were performed. AS-OCT confirmed the diagnosis of posterior keratoconus. The patient subsequentl

Identification of six novel mutations in ZEB1 and description of the associated phenotypes in patients with posterior polymorphous corneal dystrophy 3.

Posterior polymorphous corneal dystrophy 3 (PPCD3) is a rare autosomal dominant disorder caused by mutations in ZEB1. To date all identified disease-causing variants were unique to the studied families, except for c.1576dup. We have detected six novel ZEB1 mutations; c.1749_1750del; p.(Pro584*) and c.1717_1718del; p.(Val573Phefs*12) in two Czech families, c.1176dup; p.(Ala393Serfs*19), c.1100C>A; p.(Ser367*), c.627del; p.(Phe209Leufs*11) in three British families and a splice site mutation, c.685-2A>G, in a patient of Sri Lankan origin. An additional British proband had the c.1576dup; p.(Val52

Peters anomaly in a red kangaroo (Macropus rufus).

A 10-mo-old female red kangaroo (Macropus rufus) presented with a unilateral congenital corneal opacity OD. Complete ophthalmic examination revealed a shallow anterior chamber and a focal area of corneal edema with multiple persistent pupillary membranes extending from the iris colarette to the corneal endothelium adjacent to the edematous area of cornea. High-resolution B-scan ultrasound of the anterior segment showed an area consistent with thinning of Descemet's membrane in the area of corneal edema. Ophthalmic examination and ultrasound findings are consistent with a diagnosis of Peters an

[Peter's anomaly, clinical and therapeutic aspects: case report].

Peter's anomaly consists in the most common congenital corneal opacity related to a malformation of the anterior segment of the eye. Its main characteristics are central leukoma and iridocorneal adherences at the area affected by the leukoma. It can be identified isolated or in association with other ocular or systemic abnormalities, and the prognostic tend to be worse in the latter cases. The etiology of Peter's anomaly remains uncertain, but the most likely causes are related to genetic, infectious, traumatic and toxic factors. A range of possible treatment strategies exists, though the effe

Heterozygous deletion at 14q22.1-q22.3 including the BMP4 gene in a patient with psychomotor retardation, congenital corneal opacity and feet polysyndactyly.

Here we report on a 1-year-old Japanese girl with psychomotor retardation, bilateral congenital corneal opacity and bilateral postaxial polysyndactyly of the feet. Although she had a normal female karyotype, our in-house bacterial artificial chromosome (BAC)-based array-CGH analysis successfully detected at least a 2.7-Mb heterozygous deletion at 14q22.1-q22.3 harboring 18 protein-coding genes. Among the genes, BMP4 was a candidate for the gene causing the abnormalities of both the eye and digits. It was previously reported that the BMP family was correlated with the morphogenesis of digits an

Tarsal kink syndrome associated with congenital corneal ulcer.

We describe a case of unilateral upper eyelid horizontal tarsal kink with congenital corneal ulceration. The surgical repair, by means of a simple resection of orbicularis and skin, is presented as a simple technique to correct the congenital anomaly of tarsal kink. Congenital tarsal kink should be included in the differential diagnosis of congenital corneal opacity and ulceration. Early recognition and surgical intervention reduces corneal scarring.
