BACKGROUND: Ophthalmic complications are profound in Marfan syndrome (MFS). However, the overall burden is not well described. Our purpose was to evaluate the ocular morbidity in a nationwide perspective.
METHODS: We identified the ocular morbidity in patients with MFS (n=407) by use of Danish national healthcare registers, using number and timing of hospital contacts related to ophthalmic diagnoses, to ophthalmic surgery and to prescriptions for ophthalmic medication. An age-matched and gender-matched background population (n=40 700) was used as comparator.
RESULTS: Among MFS, 56% (226/407)

INTRODUCTION: Retinoblastoma (RB) tumors having high-risk histopathologic features (HRFs) have an increased risk of metastasis and disease relapse. However, RB has not been studied widely in Pakistan. Therefore, we evaluated the association of clinical, histopathologic, and radiological findings with HRFs in patients with RB who were treated at the Indus Health & Hospital Network in Karachi, Pakistan.
METHODS: We enrolled treatment-naïve patients with RB who received upfront enucleation from September 2017 to February 2021. We evaluated enucleated eyes with the Intraocular Classification of R

Persistent fetal vasculature (PFV) syndrome is characterized by abnormal regression of the fetal hyaloid system and may occur in various forms. In this report, two atypical cases associated with posterior capsular defect and ectopic lens material located along Cloquet's canal are discussed. Ultrasonography of these patients presenting with bilateral total cataracts revealed a hyaloidal stalk extending from the optic nerve head to the retrolental area. During lensectomy, it was observed that lens particles were moving anteriorly from the central mid-vitreous to the aspiration port and that the

A 6-year-old systemically healthy child presented with visual acuity of 1/60, N18 oculusdextrus (OD), and 6/18, N6 oculus sinister (OS). Slit-lamp biomicroscopy revealed suspicious bilateral inferotemporal pigmented ciliary body (CB) tumour, protruding posterior capsule and temporal posterior subcapsular cataract oculus uterque. Anterior segment optical coherence tomography, ultrasonography, ultrasonic biomicroscopy and Scheimpflug imaging revealed protruding posterior capsule and cortex abutting but not arising from CB suggestive of peripheral pigmented posterior lenticonus with hypermetropia

The most cases of persistence hyperplastic primary vitreous (PHPV) are unilateral and sporadic, however, bilateral presentation could be present in a small number of patients, in whom other genetic diseases must be ruled out. We describe a case of a 2 months child with bilateral persistence hyperplastic primary vitreous confirmed by ultrasound. In addition, with neurodevelopmental defects, microcephaly, facial dimorphism, axial hypotonia, and without brain abnormalities on MRI, in whom a de novo mutation of the CTNNB1 gene was found during the genetic study, which explains the findings.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: To describe a case series of three patients in one family with Von Hippel-Lindau (VHL) disease who presented with vitreoretinal neovascularization and resulting tractional retinal detachments (TRDs). This vitreoretinal phenotype of VHL may benefit from early surgical intervention.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Descriptive case series of three patients in one family with VHL disease. A review of the literature regarding surgical intervention for VHL was performed.
RESULTS: All three patients developed prominent intravitreal neovascularization with fibrovascular growth within

BACKGROUND: Persistent hyperplastic primary vitreous (PHPV) is a congenital form of vitreous dysplasia that can be categorized into anterior, posterior, and mixed types according to the affected location within the eye. Definitive diagnoses of PHPV are usually made based on B-mode ultrasound, optical coherence tomography (OCT), and Doppler ultrasound findings. In this report, we discuss the case of a 7-year-old boy in whom a definitive diagnosis of atypical anterior PHPV was possible based on intraoperative observations, pathological findings, and the results of ophthalmic examination.

PURPOSE: To determine if the stress of normal eye movements results in gaze-induced globe deformations, vitreous chamber axial length and vitreous chamber axial volume (VCAV) change in highly myopic eyes.
METHODS: A prospective imaging study was performed on 82 eyes of 43 patients with high myopia (>27 mm of axial length) with a clinical diagnosis of staphyloma. Three-dimensional MRI scans were acquired while subjects gazed in five directions (primary, nasal, temporal, superior and inferior). Surface renderings were generated, and a processing pipeline was created to automate alignment of the

The vasa hyaloidea propria, a component of the fetal hyaloidal vasculature, is characterized by multiple persistent fetal vasculatures branching into the vitreous. We present a 4-month-old girl with stage 4 familial exudative vitreoretinopathy, with multiple ectopic retinal vessels extending into the vitreous, confirmed with fluorescein angiography, which was consistent with persistent vasa hyaloidea propia/retinae making contact with the retina. The patient underwent vitreoretinal surgery to address the retinal detachment, during which the patent stalks of the persistent vasa hyaloidea propia

Asymptomatic free floating vitreous cyst with macular coloboma constantly been stable for 10 years is a rarely reported case. Here, we report a case of 30-year-old male who presented to us with best corrected visual acuity of 6/12 and 6/18 in right and left eye, respectively. On slit-lamp examination anterior segment was normal. His fundus examination showed a solitary free floating cyst in the vitreous in right eye and bilateral macular coloboma. Blood tests for toxoplasmosis and cysticercosis were negative. The patient had no symptoms, so we decided to follow the patient without any treatmen

We report the case of a 12-year-old girl diagnosed with Nicolaides-Baraitser syndrome with novel ocular features. Diagnosis was based on clinical features, including developmental delay, sparse hair, and craniofacial features along with de novo mutation in SMARCA2. Eye findings included bilateral glaucoma, cataracts, and degenerative vitreoretinopathy. Given the absence of an associated recognizable disorder and the low prevalence of these ocular findings in the general population, we suggest that these ocular features may not be chance association.

Persistent fetal vasculature (PFV) is a well-defined phenomenon that is characterized by the presence of fetal hyaloid vessels within the eye after birth. Although there have been numerous studies describing the occurrence, surgical management, and possible pathogenesis of PFV, few studies have discussed the possibility of a patient having more than one vascular stalk. The authors describe a 5-year-old female with PFV having two well-delineated stalks. [Ophthalmic Surg Lasers Imaging Retina. 2019;50:330-331.].
