Persistent Fetal Vasculature.

During development, the fetal vasculature nourishes the developing lens and retina, and it subsequently regresses after the formation of the retinal vessels. Persistent fetal vasculature (PFV) occurs as a result of a failure of fetal ocular vasculature to undergo normal programmed involution, which leads to blindness or serious loss of vision. Persistent fetal vasculature is responsible for as much as 5% of childhood blindness in western countries. The regulatory mechanisms responsible for fetal vascular regress remain obscure, as do the underlying causes of the failure of regression. Because

Multiloculated Ciliary Body Cysts and Lenticular Coloboma: A Rare Phenotypic Variation Associated With Persistent Fetal Vasculature.

A case of a 4 year-old boy with persistent fetal vasculature, lenticular coloboma, and a benign, multiloculated ciliary body mass is reviewed. The presence of ciliary body cysts in association with persistent fetal vasculature is sparsely reported. Its presence in a child can cause a diagnostic dilemma and lead to amblyopia. [J Pediatr Ophthalmol Strabismus. 2018;55:e39-e41.].

Peripheral Persistent Fetal Vasculature: A Report of Three Cases.

The authors report three cases of persistent fetal vasculature (PFV) presenting with an atypical peripheral fibrovascular stalk. A 5-month-old with congenital exotropia with a vitreous hemorrhage in the right eye underwent vitrectomy, and a mid-peripheral vitreal vascular stalk was visualized within the area of hemorrhage. The second case is of an 8-year-old with two fetal vascular remnants in the right eye: (1) a stalk superotemporally extending from the pars plana to the mid-peripheral retina that was associated with a retinal break and (2) a focal lens opacity. The third case is a 12-year-o

Different composition of intraocular immune mediators in Posner-Schlossman-Syndrome and Fuchs' Uveitis.

Posner-Schlossman-Syndrome (PSS) is clinically characterized by acute, recurrent, mild, unilateral uveitis anterior accompanied by elevated intraocular pressure (IOP). Fuchs´ Uveitis (FU) is a chronic, low-grade-inflammatory disorder, involving anterior uvea and vitreous. The clinical findings show remarkable similarities as well as differences. In our study, we determine the composition of immune mediators in aqueous humor of patients with PSS and FU and evaluate if immune mediators play a crucial role in specific viral intraocular inflammation and IOP rises. Aqueous humor samples from 81 uve

[Morphological features of clinical manifestations of particular congenital lens and vitreous anomalies].

The review covers general clinical features of particular congenital anomalies of the human eye associated with its abnormal embryonic development. Principal literature sources on evaluation of congenital changes in the vitreous body and identification of its 'underdevelopment' in certain types of congenital cataracts have been studied. The said changes were analyzed with account to general pathology of the human body as well as local morphological manifestations. Covered is the time period from the end of the XIX century to the present. According to the authors, their analysis helps justify t

Induction of Immune Surveillance of the Dysmorphogenic Lens.

The lens has been considered to be an immune privileged site not susceptible to the immune processes normally associated with tissue injury and wound repair. However, as greater insight into the immune surveillance process is gained, we have reevaluated the concept of immune privilege. Our studies using an N-cadherin lens-specific conditional knockout mouse, N-cadΔlens, show that loss of this cell-cell junctional protein leads to lens degeneration, necrosis and fibrotic change, postnatally. The degeneration of this tissue induces an immune response resulting in immune cells populating the lens

Cytomegalovirus Retinitis as a Presenting Feature of Multisystem Disorder: Dyskeratosis Congenita.

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) retinitis is an opportunistic infection commonly seen in disorders that affect the immune system of the body such as acquired immunodeficiency syndrome and hematological malignancies such as leukemia/lymphoma or organ transplantation. The occurrence of CMV retinitis in the absence of such condition should be thoroughly investigated, as it is a strong indicator of poor immune competence. We here report an interesting case of CMV retinitis as a presenting feature of rare multisystem disorder "Dyskeratosis congenita."

Prenatal Diagnosis of Persistent Hyperplastic Primary Vitreous: Report of 2 Cases and Review of the Literature.

Persistent hyperplastic primary vitreous is a spectrum of congenital ocular abnormalities characterized by leukocoria, microphthalmia, cataracts, extensive intravitreal hemorrhage, persistence of the hyaloid artery, glaucoma, and retinal detachment. It might be isolated or associated with congenital syndromes such as trisomy 13, Walker-Warburg syndrome, and Norrie disease. We present 2 cases of persistent hyperplastic primary vitreous diagnosed by prenatal sonography in the early third trimester. Bilateral hyperechoic lenses and retinal nonattachment were detected in the sonographic examinatio
