Insights into the genotype-phenotype relationship of ocular manifestations in Kabuki syndrome.

We aim to assess if genotype-phenotype correlations are present within ocular manifestations of Kabuki syndrome (KS) among a large multicenter cohort. We conducted a retrospective, medical record review including clinical history and comprehensive ophthalmological examinations of a total of 47 individuals with molecularly confirmed KS and ocular manifestations at Boston Children's Hospital and Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center. We assessed information regarding ocular structural, functional, and adnexal elements as well as pertinent associated phenotypic features associated with KS

Vascular features around the optic disc in familial exudative vitreoretinopathy: findings and their relationship to disease severity.

BACKGROUND: Familial exudative vitreoretinopathy (FEVR) is a rare congenital disorder of retinal vascular development. We aimed to study the vascular characteristics around the optic disc in neonates with FEVR and the relationship with disease severity. METHODS: A retrospective, case-control study including 43 (58 eyes) newborn patients with FEVR at stages 1 to 3 and 30 (53 eyes) age-matched normal full-term newborns was conducted. The peripapillary vessel tortuosity (VT), vessel width (VW) and vessel density (VD) were quantified by computer technology. The t-distributed stochastic neighbor e

Comparison of Cirrus spectral domain OCT with disc-macula distance to disc diameter ratio in diagnosing congenital optic nerve hypoplasia.

PURPOSE: Diagnosis of congenital optic nerve hypoplasia (CONH) can be challenging in children or uncooperative individuals. Misdiagnosis can lead to inappropriate treatment; thus, it is important to identify an objective and reliable measurement. The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether Cirrus spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) is a valid test for diagnosing CONH by comparing it to the disc-macula distance to disc diameter (DM:DD) ratio. METHODS: A total of 93 participants (64 controls and 29 CONH) underwent comprehensive eye examinations, fundus photography and Ci

FDXR-Associated Oculopathy: Congenital Amaurosis and Early-Onset Severe Retinal Dystrophy as Common Presenting Features in a Chinese Population.

Variants in FDXR reportedly cause autosomal recessive auditory neuropathy and optic atrophy, expanding to retinal dystrophy. This study aimed to further clarify associated phenotypes. FDXR variants were selected from our in-house whole-exome sequencing dataset of 6397 families with different eye conditions. The clinical data of the identified patients were summarized. Biallelic pathogenic or likely pathogenic FDXR variants were identified in 11 unrelated patients, including 14 missense variants of which 10 were novel. Fundus observation showed complete optic disc pallor, silver wiring or sever

Prepapillary vascular loops - A new classification.

BACKGROUND: Prepapillary vascular loops are a type of congenital vascular anomaly seen on or around the optic disk. Patients with this condition are usually asymptomatic and are detected incidentally on routine fundus examinations. Differential diagnosis for this condition includes neovascularization of the disk and collaterals on the disk. Prepapillary capillary loops are not associated with any systemic condition. They are usually unilateral in presentation, but can rarely be bilateral. PURPOSE: To discuss the new proposed classification of prepapillary capillary loops. SYNOPSIS: : Prepapi

Aicardi syndrome in a Nigerian female child: A case report and literature review of a rare neuro-developmental disorder from North-Western Nigeria.

Aicardi syndrome is a very rare neurodevelopmental disorder, inherited as an X-linked dominant condition with a triad of infantile spasm, partial or complete agenesis of the corpus callosum, and chorio-retinal "lacunae." We report a case of a female infant with the classical triad of Aicardi syndrome. A female infant presented to the Paediatric Neurology Clinic of the Federal Medical Centre Birnin-Kebbi, North-western Nigeria, at the age of two months with complaints of recurrent afebrile convulsions typical for infantile spasms. The patient was delivered at term with normal Apgar scores and a

Papilloedema: a highly specific predictor of raised intracranial pressure in a complex neurosurgical paediatric cohort.

PURPOSE: Papilloedema is recognised as an indicator of raised intracranial pressure, although there is a paucity of literature describing the utility of fundoscopy in screening for raised ICP in children with craniofacial synostosis, particularly young children. We sought to investigate the association of optic disc morphology with ICP in children, and to define the sensitivity and specificity of papilloedema as a clinical indicator of raised ICP and determine if age, or underlying conditions impact the findings. METHOD: Retrospective analysis of all patients undergoing ICP monitoring at a de

[A case of von Hippel-Lindau syndrome with optic disc pit and macular hole].

A 69-year-old female patient presented to the ophthalmology department with complaints of blurred vision in the left eye for more than 10 days. Her medical history revealed a history of right renal tumor and left pheochromocytoma, which were treated with surgical resection at an external institution. Ophthalmic examination revealed a temporal superior cup-shaped optic disc pit in the left eye, along with a macular hole approximately 1/5 the size of the optic disc diameter in the macular region. Additionally, peripheral retinal examination at the 6 o'clock and 11 o'clock positions showed vascul
