Spontaneous Bilateral Disappearance of Choroid Plexus Cysts in the Trigone of the Lateral Ventricles: A Case Report.

Non-neoplastic intracranial cysts (NICCs) are usually stable and typically do not cause symptoms throughout life. Among the various NICCs, rare spontaneous disappearances of arachnoid cysts, colloid cysts, and Rathke?s cleft cysts in various locations have been reported. To our knowledge, no reports to date have described spontaneous disappearance of choroid plexus cysts (CPCs). We here report the first case of spontaneous bilateral disappearance of CPCs. Although the exact pathogenic mechanisms remain unclear, we believe that a sudden transient change in intracranial pressure or cerebrospinal

Dosimetric evaluation and clinical application of collimated apertures with proton beam line scanning in stereotactic radiotherapy.

PURPOSE: Stereotactic radiotherapy (SRT) is a highly effective treatment with precision for small, localized lesions. Proton therapy, characterized by the Bragg peak, offers superior dose conformity compared to photon-based approaches. However, challenges remain in minimizing lateral penumbra and optimizing dose delivery, particularly for small targets. This study presents the first clinical application of collimated apertures integrated with the proton line scanning technique for proton stereotactic radiotherapy (PSRT). The aim was to evaluate the dosimetric advantages and clinical feasibilit

Loss of UBE3A impacts both neuronal and non-neuronal cells in human cerebral organoids.

Angelman syndrome is a neurodevelopmental disorder caused by (epi)genetic lesions of maternal UBE3A. Research has focused largely on the role of UBE3A in neurons due to its imprinting in that cell type. Yet, evidence suggests there may be broader neurodevelopmental impacts of UBE3A dysregulation. Human cerebral organoids might reveal these understudied aspects of UBE3A as they recapitulate diverse cell types of the developing human brain. In this study, scRNAseq on organoids reveals the effects of UBE3A disruption on cell type-specific compositions and transcriptomic alterations. In the absenc

Investigating the eye in Down syndrome as a window to Alzheimer's disease: the REVEAL protocol - a clinical cross-sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: There is a need for early, non-invasive and inexpensive biomarkers for Alzheimer's disease (AD), which could serve as a proxy measure in prevention and intervention trials that might eventually be suitable for mass screening. People with Down syndrome (DS) are the largest patient group whose condition is associated with a genetically determined increased risk of AD. The REVEAL study aims to examine changes in the structure and function of the eye in individuals with DS compared with those with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and cognitively healthy control (HC) individuals. REVEA

Choroidal Neovascularization in Peripapillary Persistent Fetal Vasculature Syndrome: A Possible Sequela of Nonsurgical Management.

Persistent fetal vasculature (PFV) refers to a spectrum of developmental ocular anomalies due to incomplete regression of embryonic vasculature. PFV may present with a wide range of manifestations and visual consequences. We report a rare manifestation of PFV wherein an exudative choroidal neovascular membrane formed in association with the posterior origin of the fibrovascular stalk. While most PFV stalks arise from the optic disc, the stalk in this case originated away from the disc in the inferonasal peripapillary area and had not undergone surgical transection. The patient was treated with

North Carolina Macular Dystrophy.

North Carolina Macular Dystrophy (NCMD) is an autosomal dominant, congenital, completely penetrant non-progressive macular malformation. The NCMD phenotype is highly variable even within the same family (Fig. 21.1). Grade 1 individuals have few drusen centrally while grade 2 can appear with confluent drusen to central vitelliform lesions. Grade 3 appears as dramatic choroidal excavations and coloboma like lesions (Small 1989; Small et al. 1991, 2022a). There can be some vision decline secondary to the development of choroidal neovascular membranes (CNVMs) (Bakall et al. 2018). Patients who dev

Clinical outcomes and quality of life after endovascular embolization for vein of Galen aneurysmal malformation (VGAM): a study from a low-and middle-income country.

OBJECTIVE: Vein of Galen aneurysmal malformations (VGAMs) represent the very epitome of challenge in pediatric neurosurgery. Despite the widespread acceptance of embolization for its treatment, due to the rarity of disease occurrence, its long-term outcomes and impact on the quality of life is not well-established. The study evaluates the long-term clinical outcomes and quality of life in patients undergoing endovascular embolization for VGAMs. METHODS: This is a retrospective review on a cohort of patients with VGAM who underwent endovascular embolization at our center between 2000 and 2022.

Maximizing safety in the treatment of a large choroidal fissure arteriovenous malformation: The essential role of anatomy, staged embolization, and microsurgical technique.

BACKGROUND: Arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) are complex congenital pathologies that require a deep understanding of their angioarchitecture and the involved brain anatomy. The ones within the temporal horn of the lateral ventricle present significant challenges for microsurgical treatment due to their deep location and proximity to critical neurovascular structures. These rare AVMs typically manifest with seizures or hemorrhage. They have afferents from the choroidal arteries, with arterial supply often arising from both the anterior and posterior circulations through the choroidal arteries

Ocular manifestations in pediatric tumor suppressor gene mutations: a case series and literature review of RB1, NF1, NF2, VHL, and TSC.

BACKGROUND: This study explores ocular manifestations in children with mutations in key tumor suppressor genes (RB1, NF1, NF2, VHL, TSC1/2), which are linked to common pediatric hereditary cancer syndromes. Mutations in these genes often lead to ocular lesions, particularly in the retina and uveal tract, including the choroid and iris. The expression of these tumor suppressor gene mutations in the eye has been a topic of interest for ophthalmologists and other healthcare professionals. We have summarized the ocular presentations of these common tumor suppressor gene mutations in pediatric pati
