A 3-month wild rabbit was presented for examination of ocular opacities in the left eye. A complete bilateral ocular examination including slit-lamp examination, indirect ophthalmoscopy, tonometry, and ultrasound biomicroscopy was performed. Biomicroscopy of the lens of the left eye showed a retrolental fibrovascular membrane causing leukocoria. The opacity prevented biomicroscopy of the vitreous and funduscopy OS. No other disorder was present in either eye. Ultrasound examination did not show any difference between the right and left eye. Histopathological examination showed a 50-μm thick, p

Torpedo maculopathy is a congenital solitary, oval-shaped lesion typically located temporal to the center of the macula. Congenital hypertrophy of the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE), RPE lesions of Gardner syndrome, and other lesions can present with similar characteristics. Because of its unique clinical and imaging features, torpedo maculopathy generally can be differentiated from other posterior segment lesions.

INTRODUCTION: Choroidal coloboma is a congenital defect caused by an inadequate closure of embryonic fissure. About 40% of the eyes with the choroidal coloboma (CHC) develop the retinal detachment (RD). It is extremely difficult to manage these cases due to the lack of pigmentation at the site of choroidal coloboma.
OUTLINE OF CASES: This is a case series of five patients with CHC and RD who were successfully operated using one of two different surgical techniques: pars plana vitrectomy (PPV)+silicone oil internal tamponade and/or scleral buckle with encircling band with laser photocoagulatio

We present a case of Marfan syndrome with lens coloboma in one eye and ectopia lentis in the other. A 14-year-old girl reported decreased vision in the left eye. Her visual acuity was 6/24 and counting fingers at 1 m in the right and left eyes, respectively. Her intraocular pressure was 15 mm Hg in both eyes. Evaluation of the right eye on slit lamp biomicroscopy under mydriasis revealed an inferiorly visible flattened and concave crystalline lens equator from 4 to 8 o'clock position along with notching and absence of zonules, suggestive of lens coloboma. Left eye examination revealed a superi

Coloboma and various ocular abnormalities have been described in CHARGE syndrome, although the severity of visual impairment varies from case to case. We conducted a multicenter study to clarify the ophthalmic features of patients with molecularly confirmed CHARGE syndrome. Thirty-eight eyes in 19 patients with CHARGE syndrome and confirmed CHD7 mutations treated at four centers were retrospectively studied. Colobomata affected the posterior segment of 35 eyes in 18 patients. Both retinochoroidal and optic disk colobomata were bilaterally observed in 15 patients and unilaterally observed in 3

A high frequency of the Cohen syndrome has been observed in a Greek island with 2,000 inhabitants and a high degree of inbreeding. All patients were homozygous for a COH1, exon 6-16 deletion suggesting a founder effect. We present the results of their first systematic ophthalmologic assessment. Myopia and chorioretinal atrophy were present in all patients of this cohort. Yet, in contrast to all groups previously reported, the majority presented with corneal changes, independently from age, gender, and family history. A pair of sisters, aged 11 and 15 years old, presented with bilateral keratoc

INTRODUCTION: A cataract is defined as an opacity of any portion of the lens, regardless of visual acuity. In some advanced cases of cataracts, in which good fundus visualization is not possible, an ultrasound examination provides better assessment of the posterior segment of the globe.
OBJECTIVES: This study aims to evaluate the ultrasonographic records of patients with advanced cataracts who were examined during cataract campaigns.
METHODS: The ultrasonographic findings obtained from 215 patients examined in cataract campaigns conducted by the Hospital das Clínicas Department of Ophthalmol

Persistent hyperplastic primary vitreous (PHPV), also known as persistent fetal vasculature, is a rare congenital developmental malformation of the eye, caused by the failure of regression of the primary vitreous. It is divided into anterior and posterior types and is characterized by the presence of a vascular membrane located behind the lens. The condition can be of an isolated type or can occur with other ocular disorders. Most cases of PHPV are sporadic, but it can be inherited as an autosomal dominant or recessive trait. Inherited PHPV also occurs in several breeds of dogs and cats. In a

BACKGROUND: Children with congenital disorders of glycosylation (CDG) type Ia frequently present with ocular involvement and visual loss. Little is known, however, about the occurrence of ophthalmological abnormalities in other subtypes of CDG syndrome.
METHODS: We evaluated 45 children sequentially diagnosed with CDG type I for the presence of ocular abnormalities at the time of the diagnosis and during follow-up. We compared the various ophthalmic findings in the different CDG subgroups.
RESULTS: Of the 45 patients, 22 had CDG type Ia, nine had CDG type Ic and 14 had a so-far undiagnosed b

Posterior microphthalmos is a rare congenital bilateral eye disorder, of which the posterior segment is abnormally small. Additional features include high hypermetropia and a tendency to uveal effusion. We report two siblings who present with high hypermetropia and other features of posterior microphthalmos. Fundus examination revealed the typical crowding of the optic disc and retinal folds. We discuss clinical characteristics, pathogenesis and complications of this disorder.
