Congenital orbito-palpebral cyst in a case of Fraser syndrome.

A seven-year-old girl was referred to our clinic with absent eyelids and a mass which was gradually increasing in size from the right orbit. The child was diagnosed to have Fraser syndrome (cryptophthalmos, abnormal genitalia, mental deficiency, renal agenesis and abnormal ears). On examination, there was cryptophthalmos and a cystic swelling arising from the right orbit. The cyst was removed. On gross examination, there was a posterior eyeball with normal optic nerve. Placed in the anterior part of the eyeball was a cyst measuring about 2 cm in diameter filled with a yellow-coloured fluid. Th

Five cases of microphthalmia with other ocular malformations.

We report five cases of complex microphthalmia with other ocular malformations in infants or children, which were evaluated to investigate the relationship between the corneal diameters and total axial length. The size of the globe was measured by using computerized tomographic scans (CT scan), A-scan ultrasonography, or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). There is a limited range of well-described malformation, including anterior or posterior segment dysgenesis or combined pathology such as corneal opacity, small cornea, iris hypoplasia, lens dislocation, cataract, chorioretinal coloboma, persi

Peters' anomaly. A synopsis of surgical management and visual outcome.

Peters' anomaly is not an isolated anterior segment abnormality, but occurs as a diverse, phenotypically heterogeneous condition associated with multiple underlying ocular and systemic defects. Surgical treatment of Peters' anomaly is a complex and challenging undertaking. The broad spectrum of disease severity, the lack of uniformity in clinical features, the differences and overlap of preoperative risk factors, and the variability in the numbers and types of intraocular procedures that are performed on individual eyes, as well as postoperative complications all contribute to the difficulties

Haploinsufficient Bmp4 ocular phenotypes include anterior segment dysgenesis with elevated intraocular pressure.

BACKGROUND: Glaucoma is a blinding disease usually associated with high intraocular pressure (IOP). In some families, abnormal anterior segment development contributes to glaucoma. The genes causing anterior segment dysgenesis and glaucoma in most of these families are not identified and the affected developmental processes are poorly understood. Bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs) participate in various developmental processes. We tested the importance of Bmp4 gene dosage for ocular development and developmental glaucoma. RESULTS: Bmp4+/- mice have anterior segment abnormalities including mal

Corneal laceration with total but isolated aniridia caused by a pecking injury.

A 38-year-old man sustained a left eye injury after being attacked by a mynah bird. Ocular examination revealed a beak-shaped, full-thickness corneal laceration with total aniridia in the left eye. No other ocular injury was observed, and the lens and posterior segment remained normal over the subsequent 3 months. A penetrating keratoplasty was planned for visual restoration.

Autosomal dominant cataracts and Peters anomaly in a large Australian family.

Peters anomaly is a congenital corneal opacity with underlying defects in the posterior stroma, Descemets membrane and corneal endothelium. It is a disorder resulting from abnormal migration or function of neural crest cells and may include abnormalities of other anterior segment structures, such as the lens and iris. We report a family in which anterior segment abnormalities, including Peters anomaly and cataracts, were inherited in an autosomal dominant fashion. Although the PAX6 gene on chromosome 11 has been shown to be involved in some cases of anterior segment developmental defects, we f

Rupture of the anterior lens capsule in Alport syndrome.

Alport syndrome is an inherited disorder of type IV collagen, a major constituent of basement membranes. Eighty-five percent of cases are transmitted through X-linked dominant inheritance, although autosomal dominant and autosomal recessive inheritance has also been reported. Clinical manifestations of Alport syndrome include progressive glomerulopathy, sensorineural deafness, anterior lenticonus, posterior corneal dystrophy, and abnormal retinal pigmentation. Anterior lenticonus may lead to loss of vision because of progressive myopia or cataract formation. We report 2 cases of unusual catara

Successful treatment of tractional corectopia using 2 mJ of energy with an Nd:YAG laser.

Although the Nd:YAG laser is most commonly used to perform posterior capsulotomies after cataract surgery, it has also been used to treat a variety of other anterior segment abnormalities including tractional corectopia, iridocorneal adhesions, persistent pupillary membranes, and posterior synechiae. Numerous reports on the use of the Nd:YAG laser to treat structures in the anterior segment have emphasized the need to use higher pulse energy for pupillary membranes, compared with the lower settings required for posterior capsulotomy. Steinert and Puliafito noted that single pulses of 4 to 12 m

Ultrasonographic diagnosis of persistent hyperplastic tunica vasculosa lentis/persistent hyperplastic primary vitreous in two dogs.

Ultrasonography was performed on a Basset hound and a Doberman clinically suspected of persistent hyperplastic tunica vasculosa lentis/persistent hyperplastic primary vitreous. In both dogs, hyperechoic lenses with a triangular-shaped echodense structure retrolentally were visible, and a very thin hyperechoic strand was seen penetrating the anechoic vitreous from this retrolental tissue to the area of the optic nerve. Using color Doppler imaging, blood flow was evident in parts of the retina in both dogs. With power Doppler imaging there was blood flow in the lens and hyperechoic strand of the

Strokes, cutis marmorata telangiectatica congenita, and factor V Leiden.

Cutis marmorata telangiectatica congenita is an uncommon, congenital cutaneous condition typified by persistent cutis marmorata and other associated abnormalities. Progressive neurologic complications are generally not a feature of the disorder. A case is reported of cutis marmorata telangiectatica congenita associated with diffuse cerebrovascular infarcts at 7 months of age. Moyamoya-like vascular abnormalities were demonstrated in addition to the factor V Leiden mutation, a congenital hypercoagulable disorder. This novel case illustrates the importance of evaluating children with strokes for
