PURPOSE: Persistent hyperplastic primary vitreous (PHPV) is a rare developmental malformation of the eye. This anomaly is usually unilateral and unassociated with other disease. PHPV may have clinical variations: an anterior and/or a posterior one. Diagnosis and treatment are exposed in our paper.
METHODS: We study 38 eyes in 34 patients. All patients had an anterior form of PHPV. Nine of them associated a posterior form. Eighteen eyes underwent surgery, the mean postoperative follow-up is 4.7 years. Treatment is discussed, depending on the initial form of PHPV. We report the evolution of the

Coats' disease is an idiopathic disorder in which telangiectatic and aneurysmal retinal vessels leak a lipoproteinaceous exudate, with consequent bullous retinal detachment. It is a diagnostic challenge, and CT and MR imaging provide valuable information to differentiate it from other pathologies, particularly from retinoblastoma. Typical, advanced Coats' disease shows on CT a denser substance posterior to the vitreous, which on MR is hyperintense on all pulse sequences. Contrast administration on both CT and MR might give slight linear enhancement at the boundary between vitreous and exudatio

Persistent hyperplastic primary vitreous (PHPV) occurs sporadically and few familial occurrences have been reported. The authors report PHPV unassociated with other congenital anomalies in male twins. One underwent a lensectomy for the management of angle-closure glaucoma and the other was treated for amblyopia. These cases provide further evidence to suggest autosomal recessive inheritance, though the possibility of developmental error cannot be excluded.

BACKGROUND: Congenital aphakia is a rare condition that has been classified as primary when no lens induction of the surface ectoderm occurs and secondary when lens development takes place but later is resorbed or expelled in utero.
METHODS: The authors report the clinical and pathologic findings in three infants with congenital aphakia whose eyes were enucleated either at surgery at 11 months or at autopsy after 1 and 3 days of life.
RESULTS: Two cases classified as primary congenital aphakia had severe microphthalmos, anterior segment aplasia, or anomalous development and posterior choroid

We evaluated four cases of persistent hyperplastic primary vitreous (PHPV) encountered at Nagoya City University Hospital in 1995. PHPV was seen unilaterally in three cases and bilaterally in one. The series comprised two males and two females, ranging in age from three to eight months, with an average of 4.8 months. Case 1 had a white strand running from the optic disc to the posterior surface of the lens in the left eye. Case 2 showed leukocoria in the right eye and central corneal opacity in the left. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed total retinal detachment in both eyes. Case 3 ex

PURPOSE: To characterize the morphological changes in the eyes of transgenic mice harboring different mutations in type II collagen gene to elucidate the function of this collagen in the eye, and to find out whether these animals could function as models for the human arthro-ophthalmopathies of the Kniest, Stickler and Wagner types.
METHODS: Three genetically engineered mouse lines representing two types of mutations in the triple-helical domain of type II collagen and their nontransgenic littermates used as controls were analyzed on day 18.5 embryonic development. After genotyping by polymer

PURPOSE: Presentation of the cases with a rare form of persistent hyperplastic primary vitreous.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: 5 children, aged 3-14, were referred to the clinic with suspicion of neoplasm changes or congenital anomalies of the eyeball. Unilateral, pathological lesions, in the form of opaque membranes, partially or totally covered the optic disc, were found. In 2 cases persistent fragments of arteria hyaloidea were also observed. Diagnosis was mode basing on three mirror glass examination, ultrasonography and fluorescein angiography. In differential diagnosis, retinoblastoma and other

Stickler syndrome is an autosomal dominantly inherited condition characterised by ocular, articular, facial, auditory and oral features. There is locus heterogeneity with about two thirds of families showing linkage to the gene encoding type II procollagen (COL 2A1). Clinical overlap with Marshall's, Wagner's and other syndromes has caused considerable confusion but the importance of the congenital vitreous anomaly, as first described by Scott, has not previously been emphasised. This study examines the linkage of two vitreo-retinal phenotype subgroups of Stickler syndrome to COL 2A1. A total

The authors report 4 patients with complicated persistent hyperplastic primary vitreous. The complications observed are cataract (2 eyes) and retinal detachment (2 eyes). The affection is bilateral in two cases and unilateral in the two other cases. After a short embryologic vitreous recall, the authors present clinical and paraclinical aspects of the condition. The authors focus on the importance of echographic data.

BACKGROUND: Hitherto no attention was paid to the prebasal vitreous body in children with congenital aniridia. Obviously there are, at least occasionally, two remarkable anomalies of the anterior hyaloid membrane.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two children (one 3 years and the other 4 years old) with congenital anirida were examined in supine position at a special slitlamp in general anaesthesia. Both children were healthy besides their ocular malformation; pregnancy and delivery were unremarkable.
RESULTS: Only the younger child showed bilaterally in symmetrical fashion a thin, circular, whitish l

Alagille's syndrome or arteriohepatic dysplasia is a unique and uncommon congenital disorder exhibiting a combination of systemic and ocular abnormalities. It is of interest to the ophthalmologist presenting with a combination of anterior and posterior segment anomalies and it is unique for the paediatrician in that these anomalies distinguish this condition from all other causes of neonatal jaundice. The authors describe a case of a young girl with Alagille's syndrome who developed bilateral acute angle closure, a hitherto unreported finding in this condition.

An apparently autosomal recessive syndrome of hereditary vitreoretinal degeneration (VRD) with retinal detachment, high myopia, and congenital encephalocele was described in 1971 by Knobloch and Layer [J Pediatr Ophthalmol 8:181-184]. Clinical confirmation of the presence of encephaloceles was lacking, and no neuropathologic studies were reported. We have evaluated a similarly affected family with 2 sibs with high myopia, VRD, and occipital scalp defects. Histologic examination of the scalp defects showed heterotopic neuronal tissue in both instances. The older girl has had a unilateral retina

In historical and many scientific papers of the 20th century double formation of eyes has been described as cyclopia, which develops as a variably marked fusion of both eye anlagen into a single eye in median position. In contrast with mythology, no cases were viable, as cyclopia is always accompanied by other severe deformities, such as cerebral defects and proboscis. For the first time a double eye on one side - a unilateral diplophthalmia - in a viable child born in Austria is presented after a reviewal of fundamentals of general and experimental embryology, cyclopia and unilateral synophth

The offspring of two Briard dogs (brother and sister) with congenital, clinically stationary night blindness showed an aggravation of the disease with severe impairment of day vision in addition to night blindness. This ultrastructural study was performed on four such second generation puppies at the age of 4 months. The neuroretina and retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) from four locations were studied: the central area (immediately temporal to the optic disc); the centre of the tapetal area; the upper periphery (border of tapetal area); and the lower periphery (non-tapetal area). The RPE showe

Extended genealogical studies stretching back to the 17th century were performed concerning the heredity patterns of vitreous involvement in Swedish patients with familial amyloidotic polyneuropathy (FAP). FAP is an autosomal dominant inherited disorder, characterized by extracellular deposition of amyloid and a clinical syndrome of peripheral and autonomic neuropathy. In addition, some patients show typical vitreous opacities. All patients had their origin in a restricted geographical area. Some main patterns arose from this study: 1) Patients who had vitreous opacities as the first symptom o

The authors report a 15-month-old white male and his 30-year-old mother who both have persistent hyperplastic primary vitreous (PHPV) unassociated with other congenital anomalies. Although there are two previous reports of PHPV in siblings suggesting autosomal recessive inheritance, this is the first report compatible with autosomal dominant inheritance.

A 26-year-old Italian male with an unusual form of familial amyloidosis was investigated. The present case does not seem to fit into any of the forms of familial amyloidosis known for the different combinations of organ involvement. The patient developed renal failure, vitreous opacities and a sensorimotor neuropathy with trophic changes in the lower limbs. Two sural-nerve biopsies performed 5 years from each other showed a progressive loss of nerve fibers and amyloid deposits in the endoneurium. The autopsy revealed bilateral adult congenital polycystic kidney with wide deposition of amyloid

Complete dislocation of the lens is a rare feature of Marfan's Syndrome. We observed four cases of bilateral complete posterior dislocation of the lens in established cases of Marfan's Syndrome over a one year period. An ophthalmologist may encounter infrequently, unilateral posterior dislocation in one eye and ectopia lentis in the other, but bilateral spontaneous posterior dislocation is rare. All our cases had associated vitreous degeneration with vitreous herniating into the anterior chamber. The pathogenesis of complete posterior dislocation in Marfan's Syndrome is discussed.

We are indebted to I. Loewenfeld and her ophthalmologist colleague H. S. Thompson for having called for an explanation of the clinical picture of Fuchs's heterochromic cyclitis in their "Critical Review." In the present author's view, the reason why so many different opinions are held concerning the clinical picture and the etiology is that only a few authors (Franceschetti, François, Georgiades, Hollwich, Huber, Kimura, Hogan and Thygeson, Perkins, Sugar and others) have been able to follow up collectives of their own, of up to 50 patients and more, for many years. None of the investigators d

Proteus syndrome is a recently recognized hamartoneoplastic malformation syndrome of uncertain etiology and variable expression, whose cardinal manifestations are pigmented nevi, hemihypertrophy, macrodactly, lipomata, and cerebroid-gyriform configuration of the skin on the soles of the feet. The characteristic features may be present at birth but become more apparent with time. In the past this syndrome has been confused with other overgrowth disorders such as neurofibromatosis, Klippel-Trenaunay-Weber syndrome, Maffucci syndrome, and Bannayan syndrome. The ophthalmic features of the proteus
