Do Long-term Thoracic Adaptations Occur in Pediatric Microtia Patients After Costal Cartilage Harvesting?

BACKGROUND: Among the various reconstructive options for congenital microtia, autologous rib cartilage grafting is widely used due to its favorable long-term aesthetic outcomes. However, concerns persist regarding postoperative chest wall deformities following costal cartilage harvest. This study aims to assess long-term morphological changes using three-dimensional chest CT scans, specifically focusing on patients who have reached full skeletal maturity. METHODS: A retrospective review was conducted on patients who underwent microtia reconstruction using rib cartilage graft. Only those who h

Augmented Reality and 3D Printing as an Aid to Surgical Planning in Modern Microtia Reconstruction.

Since Tanzer's seminal work introducing costal cartilage for ear reconstruction, subsequent advances by Brent, Nagata, and Firmin have refined surgical techniques and aesthetic outcomes. However, fundamental aspects of the procedure-such as planning incisions, achieving accurate ear positioning, and guiding chest wall incisions for rib harvest-have seen limited innovation. The current standard practice of using projection paper or transparent templates to replicate the contralateral ear position remains imprecise. Similarly, autologous cartilage harvest can be particularly challenging in patie

Innovative tissue engineering strategies for auricular regeneration in microtia: Current advances and future perspectives.

Microtia is a congenital auricular malformation that typically requires reconstructive surgery to restore both form and function. Autologous costal cartilage transplantation remains the clinical standard, yet its invasiveness and donor-site morbidity have driven growing interest in tissue-engineered alternatives. Modern cartilage tissue engineering integrates seed cells, biomaterial scaffolds, and bioactive factors, augmented by emerging technologies such as 3D printing, electrospinning, and dynamic bioreactors. This review summarizes recent progress in auricular reconstruction, with a focus o

Molecular impacts of Meier-Gorlin syndrome mutations on human origin licensing.

Meier-Gorlin syndrome (MGS) is a form of primordial dwarfism linked to mutations in DNA replication initiation factors. Many MGS variants affect proteins required for the first step of replication initiation-the licensing of replication origins-during which the origin recognition complex (ORC), CDC6, and CDT1 cooperatively load MCM2-7 complexes onto DNA as an MCM double hexamer. The specific impacts of MGS mutations on origin licensing remain poorly understood. In this study, we systematically analyze the effects of MGS-linked missense mutations in core domains of human origin licensing factor

A Novel Advantage to Microtia Reconstruction Utilizing Ear Molding: A Case Report of Goldenhar Syndrome's Clinical Presentation and Surgical Reconstruction.

This case report describes a unique approach to reconstructing microtia in a patient with microtia and craniofacial microsomia. Microtia is a congenital outer ear deformity that can vary in severity, from minor abnormalities to complete absence of the ear. The traditional methods for microtia reconstruction are autologous reconstruction using the patient's rib cartilage or alloplastic reconstruction using porous polyethylene. Autologous reconstruction typically begins around age six to 10 years of age when the rib cage is sufficiently large enough, while alloplastic reconstruction may be perfo

Auditory evoked-potential abnormalities in a mouse model of 22q11.2 Deletion Syndrome and their interactions with hearing impairment.

The 22q11.2 deletion is a risk factor for multiple psychiatric disorders including schizophrenia and also increases vulnerability to middle-ear problems that can cause hearing impairment. Up to 60% of deletion carriers experience hearing impairment and ~30% develop schizophrenia in adulthood. It is not known if these risks interact. Here we used the Df1/+ mouse model of the 22q11.2 deletion to investigate how hearing impairment might interact with increased genetic vulnerability to psychiatric disease to affect brain function. We measured brain function using cortical auditory evoked potential
