Mice Haploinsufficient for Ets1 and Fli1 Display Middle Ear Abnormalities and Model Aspects of Jacobsen Syndrome.

E26 transformation-specific 1 (ETS1) and friend leukemia integration 1 (FLI1) are members of the ETS family of transcription factors, of which there are 28 in humans. Both genes are hemizygous in Jacobsen syndrome, an 11q contiguous gene deletion disorder involving thrombocytopenia, facial dysmorphism, growth and mental retardation, malformation of the heart and other organs, and hearing impairment associated with recurrent ear infections. To determine whether any of these defects are because of hemizygosity for ETS1 and FLI1, we characterized the phenotype of mice heterozygous for mutant alle

Reticular pseudodrusen associated with a diseased bruch membrane in pseudoxanthoma elasticum.

IMPORTANCE: Reticular pseudodrusen (RPD) are frequently associated with age-related macular degeneration and considered to be an independent risk factor for disease progression, but the pathophysiologic mechanisms are only incompletely understood. Therefore, it may be helpful to identify the associations of RPD with other diseases that have defined pathophysiologic mechanisms. OBJECTIVE: To describe the phenotype, prevalence, and topographic distribution of RPD in patients with pseudoxanthoma elasticum (PXE) and their association with a diseased Bruch membrane. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPA

Spontaneous resolution of cerebrospinal fluid otorrhoea in a patient with a Hyrtl's fissure.

OBJECTIVE: This paper reports a rare case of cerebrospinal fluid leak due to a Hyrtl's fissure and discusses the non-operative management of the case. Background and case report: Cerebrospinal fluid otorrhoea is a rare phenomenon arising from an abnormal communicating tract between the subarachnoid space and middle ear. Affected patients are at a higher risk of developing meningitis and other neuro-otological complications. There are four common congenital causes of cerebrospinal fluid otorrhoea in the region of a normal labyrinth. This paper describes a case of cerebrospinal fluid in the midd

Frequency of ear symptoms and hearing loss in ichthyosis: a pilot survey study.

Ichthyoses comprise a heterogeneous array of skin conditions resulting from impairment of cornification. Although ear structures can be affected, ear-related symptoms have never been investigated in patients with ichthyosis. In this pilot survey study, our aim was to determine the frequency of ear symptoms, hearing loss, and related medical interventions in patients with ichthyosis. Our secondary aim was to compare the frequency of these items according to age group. An online survey using Redcap was developed and posted online on the Foundation for Ichthyosis and Related Skin Types website fo

Cerebellar infarction presenting as inner ear decompression sickness following scuba diving: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Inner ear decompression sickness following scuba diving is not uncommon and the characteristic features of this disorder are acute peripheral vestibular syndrome, sometimes associated with cochlear signs, requiring urgent hyperbaric oxygen therapy. Cerebellar infarction can also mimic isolated peripheral vestibulopathy. CASE REPORT: The authors report the case of a 47-year-old man in good general health admitted with acute left vestibular dysfunction suggestive of inner ear decompression sickness 6 hours after scuba diving. Normal videonystagmography and delayed onset of occipit

[Semi-implantable transcutaneous bone conduction hearing devices].

BACKGROUND: Patients with air-bone gaps or combined hearing loss that cannot be corrected by tympanoplasty can be treated with bone conduction hearing aids. The disadvantages of conventional and percutaneous systems are, on one hand, the obvious external fixation components and on the other hand, the biological and psychosocial problems of open implants. This project was therefore set up to develop a semi-implantable, magnetically anchored transcutaneous bone conduction device, introduce it into clinical application and follow-up the results. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The principle of this bone c

Complications of ventilation tube insertion in children with and without cleft palate: a nested case-control comparison.

IMPORTANCE: Optimizing hearing in patients with cleft lip and/or palate (CLP) by early recognition and management of otitis media with effusion is essential for speech development. Some evidence has suggested higher complication rates from ventilation tube (VT) insertion in patients with CLP and has led to a trend not to treat these patients surgically. However, studies have failed to match comparison groups for age and sex. OBJECTIVE: To compare complication rates from VT insertion in pediatric patients with and without CLP. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: The study used a nested case-co

Lateral preference in Williams-Beuren syndrome is associated with cognition and language.

Williams-Beuren syndrome (WBS) is a genetically defined neurodevelopmental disorder presenting with intellectual disability associated with a specific neurocognitive profile characterized by anxiety, hypersociability, poor visuospatial skills and relatively preserved language. We have defined the lateral preference in 69 individuals (40 males and 29 females, age range 5-47 years) with WBS confirmed by molecular testing, and explored its correlation with cognition, behavior problems, the main aspects of the behavioral phenotype, and specific molecular variants (parental origin and size of the 7

Cerebrospinal fluid leaks and encephaloceles of temporal bone origin: nuances to diagnosis and management.

OBJECTIVE: Temporal bone encephalocele has become less common as the incidence of chronic mastoid infection and surgery for this condition has decreased. As a result, the diagnosis is often delayed, and the encephalocele is often an incidental finding. This situation can result in serious neurologic complications with patients presenting with cerebrospinal fluid leak and meningitis. We review the occurrence of, characteristics of, and repair experience with temporal encephaloceles from 2000-2012. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective review of 32 patients undergoing combined mastoidectomy and

Retropharyngeal masses in neurofibromatosis type 1: Imaging findings in 2 cases.

Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF-1) affects mesenchymal development via multisystemic manifestations. We present 2 cases of NF-1 that manifested as a retropharyngeal mass-1 as a lateral cervical meningocele in a 60-year-old man and the other as a focal neurofibroma in a 37-year-old man. Contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was invaluable in identifying the exact nature of the 2 lesions; no contrast enhancement was seen in the case of the meningocele, and enhancement was seen in the case of the neurofibroma. These 2 cases illustrate the importance of the history and contrast-enhanced

Cerebral cyst formation following stereotactic ablative irradiation for non-nasopharyngeal head and neck malignancies: imaging findings and relevant dosimetric parameters.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the clinical characteristics, imaging findings and relevant dosimetric parameters of cases presenting with cerebral cyst formation (CCF) after single or oligo-fractionated stereotactic radiotherapy (SRT) for non-nasopharyngeal head and neck malignancies (HNMs). METHODS: We identified four cases with the follow-up duration of 5.7-9.1 years from SRT. The irradiated sites included the middle ear in one case and the ethmoid sinus in three cases, two of the latter possessed brain invasion. The chronological changes in MR images and the dose-volume histogram of the adjacent b

Mcph1-deficient mice reveal a role for MCPH1 in otitis media.

Otitis media is a common reason for hearing loss, especially in children. Otitis media is a multifactorial disease and environmental factors, anatomic dysmorphology and genetic predisposition can all contribute to its pathogenesis. However, the reasons for the variable susceptibility to otitis media are elusive. MCPH1 mutations cause primary microcephaly in humans. So far, no hearing impairment has been reported either in the MCPH1 patients or mouse models with Mcph1 deficiency. In this study, Mcph1-deficient (Mcph1(tm1a) (/tm1a) ) mice were produced using embryonic stem cells with a targeted
