A staged auricular reconstruction in microtia patients was developed by using superficial mastoid fascia (as part of extrinsic postauricular fascia) to cover the cartilagenous framework due to its highly vascularized nature. Three branches of external carotid artery (superficial temporal artery, posterior auricular artery and occipital artery) were found to supply this fascia, this study was therefore aimed to investigate the dimension of blood supply from each vessel and also to demonstrate the existence of anastomoses among these arteries. Thirty-eight pinnas and postauricular fascias from T

We are reporting a new mutation in the SPINT2 gene (c.443G>A (p. Arg148His)) that explains the association of choanal atresia with congenital sodium diarrhoea (CSD) in an Emirati family in the Middle East. To our knowledge, this mutation is neither listed in a mutation database nor described in the literature. Similar to other patients with CSD associated with SPINT2, this child remains dependent on parenteral nutrition for fluids and nutritional support resulting in failure to thrive. The determination of the molecular basis of syndromic CSD will facilitate prenatal and postnatal diagnosis of

OBJECTIVES: Congenital Aural Atresia (CAA) is a deformity of the external ear and it is commonly associated with malformations of middle and inner ear and, in some cases, with other facial deformities. Very few assessment measures exist for evaluating the functional impairment in children with CAA. Purpose of this study is to introduce and describe an assessment Checklist, (nominated FOS Checklist) that covers feeding abilities (F), oralmotor skills (O), communication/language development (S) in children with CAA. FOS wants to offer a range of assessment providing a profile of the child in com

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the characteristics of stenotic external auditory canal (EAC) (e.g., shape, length, orientation, and curvature) and to compare them with those of the cholesteatoma and no cholesteatoma groups, which may help to explain cholesteatoma formation to a certain degree.
METHODS: Computed tomography scans of two groups of patients (with and without EAC cholesteatoma) were analyzed. We determined the degree of microtia, the stenosis of EAC, radius and curvature of osseous EAC bending (abbreviated as OEB-r and OEB-c, respectively), and other anatomic parameters of EAC by using

BACKGROUND: Knowledge of the position of the ethmoidal arteries is critical to enable safe endoscopic sinus and orbital surgery. The presence of a third or "middle" ethmoid variant has recently become more relevant as endoscopic intraconal surgery continues to advance. The purpose of this study was to quantify the presence of supernumerary (ie, over 2) ethmoid foramina in different ethnicities and genders.
METHODS: Morphometric osteologic measurements were performed in 273 orbits. Prevalence of supernumerary ethmoid foramina and orbital length data were obtained from human skulls of Asian (n

Fusion of the atlas with the occipital bone is a rare congenital dysplasia known as occipitalization of the atlas, occipitocervical synostosis, assimilation of the atlas, or atlanto-occipital fusion. It is a component of the paraxial mesodermal maldevelopment and commonly associated with other dysplasias of the craniovertebral junction. External auditory canal atresia or external aural atresia is a rare congenital absence of the external auditory canal. It occurs as the consequence of the maldevelopment of the first pharyngeal cleft due to defects of cranial neural crest cells migration and/or

IMPORTANCE: CHARGE syndrome refers to a syndrome involving coloboma, heart defects, atresia choanae, retardation of growth and development, genitourinary disorders, and ear anomalies. However, Verloes revised the characteristics of CHARGE syndrome in 2005 to define this syndrome more broadly. Deficiency of the semicircular canals is now a major criterion for CHARGE syndrome.
OBJECTIVE: To characterize patients with CHARGE syndrome at our center using Verloes' criteria and to reevaluate the nomenclature for this condition.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: We performed a medical chart review

Transoral microresection for treatment of vocal cord lesions involving the anterior commissure may result in anterior glottic webs. In this study, we retrospectively reviewed 54 patients who underwent microsurgery for bilateral lesions involving the anterior commissure and categorized them into two groups. The keel placement and control groups received endoscopic keel placement and mitomycin C, respectively. During the follow-up of at least 1 year, the laryngeal web formation rate significantly decreased in the keel placement group compared with that in the control group (18.6% versus 54.5%, P

A 13-year-old boy with Down syndrome (DS) presents to the pediatric otolaryngologist after being lost to follow-up for several years. The child is accompanied by his stepmother, who has recently been granted full custody together with his father. The stepmother states that the child's mother was non-compliant with his medical care and now, as she describes it, they are "playing catch-up." According to his stepmother, he has a history of recurrent ear infections and had tympanostomy tubes inserted in the past (date(s) unknown). The child has several other co-morbidities including severe obstruc

OBJECTIVE: Embolization of cranial dural sinus arteriovenous fistulae with transvenous occlusion of the involved sinuses is an established strategy when the collateral brain drainage allows it. We aimed to investigate the frequency and types of complications after endovascular occlusion of the sigmoid sinus.
METHODS: From our database, we detected 52 endovascularly treated consecutive cases of cranial dural arteriovenous shunts involving the sigmoid sinus. The cases treated through the transvenous approach alone or combined with the transarterial one were analyzed retrospectively. Previously

Conclusions This study shows that the prevalence of auditory neuropathy spectrum disorder (ANSD) in the children with inner auditory canal (IAC) stenosis is much higher than those without IAC stenosis, regardless of whether they have other inner ear anomalies. In addition, the auditory characteristics of ANSD with IAC stenosis are significantly different from those of ANSD without any middle and inner ear malformations. Objectives To describe the auditory characteristics in children with IAC stenosis as well as to examine whether the narrow inner auditory canal is associated with ANSD. Method
