Temporal bone findings in hemifacial microsomia.

The temporal bone findings in a case of hemifacial microsomia are described with photographs. The right facial hypoplasia was associated with anophthalmia and microtia on the same side. The right petrous bone was hypoplastic and showed total superior dehiscence of the internal acoustic meatus. Th otic capsule was deformed with an underdeveloped cochlear modiolus grossly deficient in spiral ganglion population. The spiralling cochlear shell showed partial deficiency of the interscalar septum between the middle and apical coils. The cochlear duct was shorter than that on the normal side; the org

Teratogenic and cytogenetic effects of some plant-derived antitumor agents (vincristine, colchicine, maytansine, VP-16-213 and VM-26) in mice.

The teratogenic effects of three new plant-derived antitumor agents, maytansine, VP-16-213 and VM-26, were compared to the effects of vincristine and colchicine in pregnant Swiss albino mice that received a single ip injection of drug on day 6, 7 or 8 of gestation. Cytogenetic studies were also performed using maternal bone marrow and embryos obtained 48 hours after injection of maytansine, vincristine, VP-16-213, VM-26 and colchicine on day 6, 7 or 8 of gestation. A close correlation between teratogenic and cytogenetic effects was not noted among the compounds tested. Vincristine had greater

Autosomal recessive sensorineural-conductive deafness, mental retardation, and pinna anomalies.

Three siblings, a boy and two girls aged 11, 9, and 4 years, were found to have a congenital disorder characterized by malformed, low-set ears and sensorineural-conductive hearing loss. Variable expressivity was evident, since the boy had both types I and III of microtia and his two sisters had only type I. The normal parents were third cousins. The analysis of these findings permits the identification of a distinct nosologic entity due to the homozygocity of an autosomal recessive mutation.

Cryptophthalmos with an orbital cyst and profound mental and motor retardation.

The cryptophthalmos syndrome generally consists of cryptophthalmia, dyscephaly (cleft lip and palate, nasal and ear defects, meningoencephaloceles, etc.), syndactyly, and urogenital malformations. This disorder is rare. Approximately 55 cases have been reported, with only a few described in the American literature. A three-year-old boy with this rare syndrome is described. Major clinical findings include: asymmetric bilateral cryptophthalmos, unilateral orbital cyst of the nasofrontal area, bilateral anophthalmos, right choanal atresia, right microtia, right auditory canal atresia, hypodontia,

Prominent ears.

The prominent ear deformity can be divided into two basic types, and combinations of the two. Two different operations are proposed to treat the cause of the deformity without foreign bodies or suture tension. The result should be an ideal shape. The ear should also feel normal and should not show any stigma of surgery.

Prominent ears : Transposition of the posterior auricular muscle on the scapha: A new technique.

This new method for the correction of a prominent ear is original, simple, and efficient. It consists of the retroauricular fixation of the scapha by means of three stitches of polyglycolic acid suture in the posterior auricular muscle after a wide dissection. This results in a transposition of this muscle on the scapha which assures a harmony of the latter with a gentle naturally rounded antihelix. Thus one achieves the main aims of this type of operation with a very simple technique.

Congenital and acquired deafness in clefting and craniofacial syndromes.

A study of 284 craniofacial defect patients determined factors associated with or predisposing to acquired or congenital hearing loss. Complete otolaryngic and audiologic evaluation was done at the initial assessment of a large group of patients. From there, a smaller number who had had adequate workup and followup was selected. The patients were classified into seven clefting categories, microtia/artresia, facial defects, cranial defects and miscellaneous anomalies of the head and neck. X-ray findings, those present at middle ear surgery and those studied at autopsy, are summarized. The incid

The otologic manifestations of mandibulofacial dysostosis.

Sixteen patients (32 ears) with diagnoses of mandibulofacial dysostosis were reviewed. The characteristic otologic manifestations of the syndrome were delineated, found to be bilateral, and consist of the following: 1. Mild symmetric deformity of the auricle (grade 1 microtia). 2. Agenesis or hypoplastic development of the mastoid and mastoid antrum. 3. Absence of the external auditory canal. 4. Marked narrowing or agenesis of the middle ear cleft. 5. Agenesis or severe malformation of the malleus and incus. When present, the malleus and incus are most often rudimentary, fused to form a conglo

Chronic tympanomastoiditis with formation of calculi.

Numerous calculi of varying sizes and shapes were discovered in the mastoid, antrum, and attic during mastoid surgery for persistent chronic suppurative inflammation of the middle ear cleft with retroauricular and external meatal fistulas in an 8-year-old boy. Light microscopic and scanning electron microscopic examinations and x-ray microanalysis revealed the calculi to consist of masses of crystals containing calcium-oxalate and calcium- and magnesium-phosphate. No signs of tuberculosis were found. Since the patient had multiple dysplasias, including ipsilateral macrotia, in addition to chro

Anthropometry of the face in lateral facial dysplasia: the unilateral form.

The skull, face and ears of 46 patients with the unilateral form of lateral facial dysplasia were examined at the Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto, using anthropometric methods for the purpose of contributing to the morphology of this syndrome. The classical picture of unilateral facial asymmetry with microtia was found in 13 cases (28.3%). The study showed bilaterally defective mandibular arc measurements in 28 per cent of the cases. The facial damage was associated in 15 per cent with ears normal in size but defective in location, level, and shape. The anthropometric examination revealed

Mandibulofacial defects in lambs from two flocks.

Mandibulofacial defects occurring in two flocks during an autumn lambing season are described. The defects were micrognathia with microtia, brachycephalus, perocephaly, bilateral oro-auricular cleft, and aprosopia. As only early lambing ewes were involved, teratogenic plant(s) were suspected as the cause.

[Threedimensional cephalometric contribution to the study of mandibulo-facial dysplasias].

The cephalometric particulars of the dysplastic syndrome of the first visceral segment, the dysostosis mandibulofacialis Franceschetti-Zwahlen were investigated. Ten patients were found with the identical symptom of a typical, uni- or bilateral microtia of the external ear. The cephalometric characteristics of the syndrome may be summarized as follows: - retroposition of the middle face - retroposition of maxilla and mandible - retrorotation of the mandible - reduction of vertical and lateral dimension of the face - reduction of transverse diameter of both dental arches - shortened mandibular
