Ameliorative Potential of Green and Red Cabbage Extracts Against Teratogenic and Hepatotoxic Effects of Dimenhydrinate in Chick Embryo.

BACKGROUND: Dimenhydrinate (DH) is the first generation medicine used as antiemetic. It is neurotoxic in rat and chick embryos. Both green cabbage (GCbg) and red cabbage (RCbg) have many health benefits and red cabbage is also full of anthocyanins and may minimize oxidative stress in chick embryo. MATERIAL AND METHOD: The study was designed to check the teratogenic impacts of dimenhydrinate and curative abilities of green and red cabbage extracts against dimenhydrinate in chick embryo through morphometry, histopathology and micrometry. Fertilized eggs were divided into six groups (n = 50): (1

Tactile Sensitivity After Ear Reconstruction with Tissue Expansion: A Semmes-Weinstein Monofilament Study.

BACKGROUND: Protective sensation is crucial to avoid injury in the reconstructed auricle. This study aimed to objectively quantify cutaneous sensitivity following autologous ear reconstruction using tissue expansion for unilateral microtia compared to the sensation of healthy auricles. METHODS: In this retrospective study, participants who underwent autologous auricular reconstruction with tissue expansion and were at least 6 months post-operation were included. From January 2025 to June 2025, standardized sensory testing with Semmes-Weinstein monofilaments (SWM) was performed at 12 predefine

Perspectives on ear reconstruction and hearing intervention in microtia-atresia: insights from parent-child dyads and adults.

Introduction Management of microtia-atresia commonly requires preference-sensitive decisions regarding hearing rehabilitation and cosmetic ear reconstruction surgery (ERS). These choices are often parent-directed in childhood, yet comparative data describing concordance and discordance among parent, child, and adult stakeholder perspectives on treatment priorities, outcomes and satisfaction remain limited. Methods We conducted a cross-sectional survey study using a survey instrument developed by the study team with multidisciplinary input from audiology, otolaryngology, and psychology to asses

Superior Auricular Artery Fascial Flap for Second Stage Microtia Reconstruction.

INTRODUCTION: The prevalence of microtia is high among the population, and 2-stage costochondral reconstruction using the Nagata technique is widely accepted. The second stage includes elevation of the previously carved framework to create the postauricular sulcus. Many techniques were described. The use of mastoid retroauricular fascia based on the superior auricular artery, not used previously up to our knowledge for microtia second stage frame elevation. AIM OF THE STUDY: Using the mastoid fascia based on the superior auricular artery for the second stage of microtia elevation, evaluating

Exposure to ambient air pollutants during early gestation and phenotypic variation in non-syndromic microtia.

Prenatal exposure to ambient air pollution has been associated with congenital anomalies; however, its association with phenotypic variation among patients with microtia is poorly defined. In this single-center retrospective case-only study, we examined the associations of estimated ambient air-pollutant exposure during gestational weeks 5-9 and bilateral involvement and anatomical severity among patients with nonsyndromic microtia. Exposures to PM2.5, PM10, O3, NO2, SO2, and CO were assessed using a spatiotemporal model linked to residential addresses recorded at initial clinical registration

Strategies for Surgical Refinement of the Antihelical Complex Using Autologous Costal Cartilage in Auricular Reconstruction for Microtia.

BACKGROUND: In microtia reconstruction, surgeons must identify the various qualities of costal cartilage that can be used to create the nuances of the antihelical complex of the new auricular construct. OBJECTIVE: To compare the techniques for antihelical complex fabrication among microtia patients undergoing two-stage ear reconstruction with autogenous cartilage based on different characteristics of autologous cartilage, as measured by photograph analysis and patient survey. METHODS: This is a retrospective chart of patients undergoing microtia reconstruction using autogenous rib cartilage

3D bioprinted composite scaffold incorporating microfluidics-derived chondrocyte microspheroids promotes auricular cartilage regeneration.

Microtia remains a major clinical challenge, as autologous costal cartilage transplantation-the current gold standard-suffers from donor-site morbidity and imprecise morphology, whereas synthetic implants are prone to immune rejection and structural collapse. Here, we present a biphasic composite strategy integrating microfluidics and 3D bioprinting. Organoid-like auricular spheroids generated via microfluidics exhibited a biomimetic architecture, featuring cartilage-specific collagen cores surrounded by organized chondrocytes, with sustained ECM secretion and phenotype maintenance. These bioa

Microtia is a 'part of me': a qualitative investigation into the family and child's experience of microtia and hearing loss.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the experiences of children/young people and families living with microtia and hearing loss. DESIGN: Interviews and focus groups were conducted with children and young people (n = 11) with microtia and parents (n = 12). A constant comparative approach consistent with Grounded Theory was used. STUDY SAMPLE: Participants included children and young people with microtia aged 7 to 20, recruited from across England, UK. They engaged in individual semi-structured interviews, whilst parents participated across five online Focus Groups. All participants spo

Allogeneic Microtia Reconstruction as a Step in the Auricular Reconstructive Ladder: Personal Technique Using Interlocking Subunit Templates.

BACKGROUND: Microtia reconstruction remains one of the most technically demanding procedures in pediatric plastic surgery. Traditional autologous rib cartilage reconstruction is highly operator-dependent, time-intensive, and associated with donor-site morbidity. Although allogeneic cartilage has emerged as a viable alternative, framework fabrication remains challenging and dependent on carving expertise. This study describes the role of allogeneic auricular reconstruction as a potential first step within a proposed auricular reconstructive ladder. The author's technique using a novel interlock

Eliminating Post-Operative Pain with Intercostal Nerve Cryoablation during Rib Cartilage Harvest for Total Microtia Construction.

Postoperative pain management at the rib cartilage harvest site for total microtia construction remains a challenge for many patients, leading to prolonged hospital stays and increased use of post-operative analgesics. Cryoablation of intercostal nerves has been an effective modality of post-operative pain control during pectus excavatum repair, reducing postoperative opioid requirements and decreasing length of hospital stay, without significantly increasing intraoperative time. This technique involves axonotmesis of the intercostal nerves, causing reversible injury with sensory return in app

Reconstruction of microtia with crus helicis transversal deformity using flap technique combined with ear cartilage transplantation: a retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: The combination of crus helicis transverse deformity and microtia presents one of the most complex ear deformities. Historically, the surgical correction of this deformity has predominantly utilized rib cartilage for ear reconstruction. This study presents a method for correcting microtia with crus helicis transversal deformity, utilizing the flap technique in conjunction with cartilage transplantation. METHODS: From February 2017 to October 2023, a total of 42 patients with crus helicis transversal deformity and microtia were included in this retrospective study. The corrective su

Biological Impact of Extrusion Bioprinting Nasoseptal Chondrocytes for Tissue Engineering Applications.

Shear stress is a significant consideration in 3D bioprinting systems, with implications for cell viability and behaviour. This study hypothesised that relevant levels of shear stress would be generated during the process of 3D bioprinting human nasoseptal chondrocytes in a nanocellulose alginate bioink, with implications for cell viability and chondrogenic gene expression. Through a combined approach of in silico modelling and in vitro testing, we assessed chondrocyte viability and gene expression immediately within the first 72 h post-printing. Cell viability was determined using live-dead,
