Harnessing Artificial Intelligence to Restore Standards in Medical and Dental Education in Pakistan.

The month of March is dedicated to Colon Cancer Awareness. Worldwide, colorectal cancer (CRC) incidence has been on the rise. It is currently the third most common cancer in men (746,000 cases, 10.0% of the total) and the second in women (614,000 cases, 9.2% of the total).1 Arecent meta-analysis reported a 61% risk reduction in CRC incidence with colonoscopy.2 Unlike screening programs for breast and prostate cancers, not only has CRC screening reduced mortality from colon cancer and detected early CRC, it has also decreased the incidence of CRC through detection and removal of pre-cancerous l

Molecular profiling and phenotypic evaluation of thermo-sensitive genic male sterility genes for high-yielding rice hybrids (Oryza sativa L.).

Temperature-sensitive genic male sterility (TGMS) is crucial for boosting rice productivity and ensuring food security. In this study, we evaluated the morphological traits and genetic diversity of 57 rice TGMS lines under fertility-inducing (Gudalur) and sterility-inducing (Coimbatore) environments. Significant variations were observed in yield and floral characteristics, with flowering times ranging from 62.3 to 152.0 days. Lines such as TNAU 16S and TNAU 93S exhibited shorter plant heights and durations, along with higher numbers of productive tillers, making them promising candidates for h

Double network hydrogels encapsulating genetically modified dedifferentiated chondrocytes for auricular cartilage regeneration.

Microtia profoundly affects patients' appearance and psychological well-being. Tissue engineering ear cartilage scaffolds have emerged as the most promising solution for ear reconstruction. However, constructing tissue engineering ear cartilage scaffolds requires multiple passaging of chondrocytes, resulting in their dedifferentiation and loss of their special phenotypes and functions. To tackle these issues, here we employ guanidinobenzoic acid (GBA) modified generation 5 polyamidoamine (PAMAM) dendrimers (PG) as a Runx1 plasmid carrier to construct PG/pRunx1 polyplex nanoparticles. The PG/pR

Toward improved auricle reconstruction: The role of FDM 3D printing with PCL and TPU materials.

Microtia, along with trauma, represents one of the main causes of external ear malformation. Different clinical techniques were developed for the reconstruction of the auricle, but they all have some drawbacks. This work is focused on the development of an innovative 3D porous scaffold, printed by Fused Deposition Modelling (FDM) and based on laser-scanned images of the healthy contralateral ear of the patient. The scaffold was printed using polycaprolactone (PCL) and thermoplastic polyether urethane (TPU) to mimic the components of the cartilage and adipose tissue, respectively. After the opt

Surgical decision-making regarding hearing and ear reconstruction in craniofacial microsomia: Exploring caregiver narratives.

Treatment decision-making is an integral but complex part of healthcare, particularly in the context of craniofacial surgeries. The aim of the current study was to explore caregiver narratives to inform future surgical care delivery and best practice. 'Life Story' narrative interviews were conducted with US English- and Spanish-speaking caregivers (n = 62) of children aged 3-17 years with craniofacial microsomia (CFM). Extracts relating to treatment decision-making were inductively coded using Reflexive Thematic Analysis. Four themes were identified: 1) 'Grappling with Difference' exemplifies

Artificial intelligence assisted identification of newborn auricular deformities via smartphone application.

BACKGROUND: Auricular deformities are common in newborns and require early diagnosis and timely intervention. Several factors highlight the necessity of a machine learning-based diagnostic solution: the high prevalence of these conditions, the narrow time window for effective non-surgical treatment, limited medical resources, and the importance of both physical and mental well-being. This study presents a novel artificial intelligence (AI) model to identify and classify common sub-types of auricle deformities, using photos taken with mobile devices. METHODS: The dataset was made up of the ope

Adipose-mesenchymal stem cells enhance the formation of auricular cartilage in vitro and in vivo.

Patients suffering from microtia have limited treatment options for auricular reconstruction due to donor-site morbidity, complications, and unaesthetic outcome. Therefore, tissue engineering emerged as an alternative therapeutic option. Here, we generated and characterized human auricular cartilage using differentiated human adipose mesenchymal stem cells (hASCs) combined with human auricular chondrocytes. The differentiated hASCs were analysed for their morphology, phenotype, gene, and protein expression of chondrogenic markers, and biochemical composition at different time points in 2D and

3D-Printed Scaffolds for Ear Reconstruction Using Decellularized Human Cartilage-Derived Bioink and Polycaprolactone.

Reconstructing auricular tissue is challenging because ear cartilage has few blood vessels and limited regenerative capacity. Traditional methods that utilize autologous costal cartilage or synthetic polymers often lead to donor site morbidity and suboptimal biocompatibility. In this study, we introduce 3D-printed scaffolds composed of decellularized human cartilage-derived bioink combined with polycaprolactone (PCL), designed to enhance both tissue regeneration and mechanical stability. The decellularization process effectively removed cellular components while preserving glycosaminoglycan an
