INTRODUCTION: Prominent ears are seen in approximately 5% of the population. This benign condition can be treated surgically to reduce or prevent psychological and social problems, most commonly in children before the start of school. Our aim was to examine the demographic characteristics of patients undergoing prominent ear surgery in Finland, and compare findings with international data.
METHODS: A retrospective study of all the patients treated for prominent ears in our academic tertiary care referral center during 2007-2011 was performed to gather demographic details of operated patients.

BACKGROUND: Prominent ear is the most common external ear deformity. To comprehensively treat prominent ear deformity, adequate comprehension of its pathophysiology is crucial. In this article, we analyze cases of prominent ear and suggest a simple classification system and treatment algorithm according to pathophysiology.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed a total of 205 Northeast Asian patients' clinical data who underwent an operation for prominent ear deformity. Follow-up assessments were conducted 3, 6, and 12 months after surgery. Prominent ear deformities were classified by diagnosti

BACKGROUND: Otoplasty procedures aim to reduce the concha-mastoid angle and recreate the antihelical fold. Here, we explained the modified postauricular fascial flap, described as a new way for recreating the antihelical fold, and reported the results of patients on whom this flap was used.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The defined technique was used on 24 patients (10 females and 14 males; age, 6-27 years; mean, 16.7 years) between June 2009 and July 2012, a total of 48 procedures in total (bilateral). Follow-up ranged from 1 to 3 years (mean, 1.5 years). At the preoperative and postoperative time

We aimed to compare the long-term results of complications of consolidative technique otoplasty (CTO) and incisionless otoplasty (IO). The study consists of 156 patients who were operated between 2006 and 2015. According to surgical techniques, these patients were divided into two groups as IO group and CTO group. The distance between the head and the ear was assessed by measuring the four points preoperatively and postoperatively (SUP: most superior helical point, SCA: superior conchal attachment, ICA: inferior conchal attachment, and lobule). Early and late postoperative complications, opera

IMPORTANCE: The prominent ear is a common external ear anomaly that is usually corrected through surgery. Electromechanical reshaping (EMR) may provide the means to reshape cartilage through the use of direct current (in milliamperes) applied percutaneously with needle electrodes and thus to reduce reliance on open surgery.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the long-term outcomes (shape change, cell viability, and histology) of a more refined EMR voltage and time settings for reshaping rabbit auricle.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND SUBJECTS: The intact ears of 14 New Zealand white rabbits were divided into 2 gr

BACKGROUND: Prominent ear deformity (PD) is an unacceptable condition of pinna that affects 5% of the population and is associated with emotional stress, behavioral disturbances, and social restrictions in relationships. Conchal hypertrphy, inadequate formation of antihelical fold, earlobe placement ahead than it should be, or various combinations of these changes are main characteristics of PD. Many surgical techniques have been described for the PD.The authors' aim was to present laterally based postauricular dermal flap combination with cartilage-sparing methods and effectiveness of this te

BACKGROUND: Otoplasty techniques are generally divided into 2 categories as cartilage-cutting and cartilage-sparing. The cartilage-cutting techniques have been criticized because of their high risk of hematoma, skin necrosis, and ear deformity. As a result, suture-based cartilage-sparing methods like Mustardé and Furnas-type suture techniques have become increasingly popular. However, with these techniques postauricular suture extrusion may be seen and recurrence rates of up to 25% have been reported.
METHODS: In this study, cartilage-sparing otoplasty is redefined by introduction of the dist

BACKGROUND: Chlamydia pecorum is a globally significant livestock pathogen causing pathology and production losses. The on-farm infection and serological dynamics and the relevance of existing diagnostic tools for diagnosing C. pecorum in livestock remains poorly characterized. In this study, we characterized the antigen and antibody dynamics of this pathogen in a longitudinal study of prime lamb production, utilizing the infection focused C. pecorum-specific 16S rRNA qPCR assay and serology based chlamydial Complement fixation Test (CFT).
METHODS: The study consisted of 76 Border Leicester m

INTRODUCTION: Various postauricular incision sites can be used for prominent ear correction depending on technique and surgeon preference. No study has previously looked at the most aesthetic (least visible) location for the postauricular scar. We investigated the visibility of various scar locations on the posterior ear from a third person perspective through a "Visibility Arc"-a formal assessment of the range of degrees where a particular scar is visible. The objective was to determine the least visible incision-that is, the scar with the shortest visibility arc.
METHODS: Normal ears were m

PURPOSE: Prominent ear is one of the most common congenital deformities in the head and neck region. More than 100 techniques have been described for correction of prominent ears in literature. Mustarde technique is one of the most widely accepted procedures of otoplasty. In our study, we used a surgical method using a drill for correction of prominent ears in combination with the Mustarde technique. Patients with only lack of antihelical fold were included the study.
METHODS: Thirty patients were operated on during 2007-2010. The angle of prominent ear from the mastoid tip to the tip of the

BACKGROUND: It has been suggested that there is a close association of abnormality in auricular muscles with various congenital auricular deformities. However, there has been no investigation to determine what muscles are involved and how they affect the deformity. The authors examined abnormalities of auricular muscles for patients with various auricular deformities.
METHODS: The authors examined 77 auricles of 62 patients with congenital auricular deformities, including cryptotia, Stahl's ear, prominent ear, lop ear, and others. The superior and posterior auricular muscles from the extrinsi

BACKGROUND: Prominent ear is the most common congenital ear deformity affecting 5% of children in the Western world and has profound psychosocial effects on the bearer. It is important to know the prevalence in the local population to have a better appreciation of the local burden of the abnormality as well as to know the parameters of ear morphology locally. These parameters can be useful in the diagnosis and evaluation of ear anomalies and may help reconstructive surgeons in reproducing an anatomically correct ear of an African/Zimbabwean child.
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the frequency of prom
