OBJECTIVE: To present our 6-year experience in flat helix correction with a simple procedure. Among the many different congenital ear deformities lies the flat helix. The correction of this anomaly must be considered owing to its significance to the overall shape and appearance of the auricle.
METHODS: Our surgical method is based on a geometrical approach, with radiating beveled incisions of the helical cartilage and subsequent overlapping and suturing of small triangular cartilaginous flaps. The method was applied in 15 patients over 6 years and was combined with correction of prominent ear

BACKGROUND: As the antihelix is created in the operation for prominent ear, the helix often presents irregularities. This biomechanical study aims to elucidate effective techniques to prevent these irregularities.
METHODS: Finite element models were produced simulating 10 prominent ears. The scaphas of the 10 models were thinned to simulate scoring or abrasion of the cartilage. The thinning was conducted in four fashions. In the first group, no thinning was conducted (Non-Scoring Models); in the second group, the upper half of the scapha was thinned (Upper-Scoring Models); in the third group,

Prominent ear deformity is an autosomal dominant inherited anomaly of the external ear. It's found to be affecting approximately 5% of the population. It most frequently results from two reasons, one being the poor developmental of the antihelix and the other being the overdevelopment of the conchal bowl. This condition can cause psychological problems in school-age children. One or more anatomical problems of prominent ear may be existing in the individuals. Several surgical methods were developed for these problems. More than 200 surgical techniques have been described up to date in otoplast

OBJECTIVE: Although protruding ears are one of the most frequently occurring congenital deformities in the craniofacial area, there is no clear consensus in literature as to the definition. Our aim was to provide a clear delineation for the definition of prominent ears, deduced from the anthropometry of normal (nonprotruding) ears.
METHODS: We performed a prospective cohort study to assess the anatomy of the normal auricle in children using computer-assisted anthropometry in photographs of 102 children aged 5 to 18 years. We compared the anatomy to retrospectively assess photographs of 44 pat

Otoplasty has a long history starting from 1948, when Dieffenbach described it first. Multiple technical modifications have been reported since. We propose a technique of scoring the helical cartilage without a visible incision on the lateral aspect of pinna for easier remolding of cartilage through posterior approach. The results have been excellent.

The prominent ear can produce significant social and psychological effects on an individual. Through the last century, many procedures have been described to correct this deformity. In this review, the authors navigate through the history of otoplasty for the protruded ear, and describe some of the breakthroughs in the procedure. Furthermore, they discuss key measurements that must be kept in mind in preoperative and intraoperative settings. They also describe in more detail some of the more common methods for correcting the protruded ear, as well as postoperative management and common complic

The objective of the current study was to detect the prevalence of developmental anomalies of the external ear among children between aged 4-6 years old in Sivas, Turkey. This cross-sectional study was conducted among 1,096 preschool children. Among the 1,096 children examined, 8 had accessory auricle, and prevalence of the anomaly was calculated at 0.7%. Fifty-one prominent ear deformities (4.6%) were detected among the children. One limitation of the study is that the prevalence of developmental anomalies of the external ear may have been underestimated. In fact, such surveys should be condu

OBJECTIVE: The prominent ear is the most common congenital deformity of the auricle. It is often recommended that prominent ears be surgically repaired before children start school and most surgeons seem to perform the surgery after 5 years of age. The aim of our study is to summarize the rationale of performing otoplasty procedure in children under the age of 5, to discuss the advantages and disadvantages, and to review the patient (parent) satisfaction.
METHODS: A retrospective study was performed on 10 children under the age of 5 who underwent otoplasty procedure and was followed for over

BACKGROUND: For over a century, various otoplasty techniques for correction of the prominent ear have been attempted. Nevertheless, cartilage memory strength, mainly in the thick cartilage (and consequently the recurrence of the prominence), still remains a problem. An additional difficulty relates to the antihelix irregularities caused by attempts to weaken the cartilage spring, which are time-consuming and in some cases lead to an unnatural-looking result.
OBJECTIVE: The technique reported in this article represents a new approach to otoplasty that deconstructs the auricular pavilion with a

AIMS: We examined variations in the shape of the human ear according to age, sex and ethnic group with particular attention to ear prominence.
METHODS: 420 volunteers were recruited. Measurements included; head height and length, ear height and axis, antihelix taken off angle, earlobe length and width, ear width at the helical root and tragus. Prominence was measured at the helical root and tragus (conchomastoid angle, conchal bowl depth and helical-mastoid distance).
RESULTS: Good symmetry was shown for all measurements. Ethnically Indian volunteers had the largest ears (both length and wid

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Microtia, prominent ear, and cryptotia are the most common types of auricular malformations. This review provides updated information on these types of reconstructions, in addition to recalling previously accepted surgical methods.
RECENT FINDINGS: Autogenous costal cartilage is still considered as an ideal material for framework fabrication in microtia reconstruction. Many surgeons have adopted the Nagata approach, the Brent approach, or variations of the two, in their work. With these employed techniques, auricles reconstructed by experienced surgeons have proven to be ae

Cyanoacrylate tissue glues have been used for many years in otoplasty and specific indications for its use are as described. As well as being an effective means of dressing the postauricular suture line, its use in gluing the pinna back to the postauricular skin may negate the use of the head bandage in the postoperative period.

BACKGROUND: Mustardé sutures and conchal setback are widely used for surgical correction of prominent ear, and numerous cartilage-manipulation techniques accompanying these two methods are also available. However, it is unknown how each technique works biomechanically. The effects of otoplasty were evaluated by finite element analysis.
METHODS: Data of eight prominent ears were obtained with a noncontact three-dimensional digitizer, and three-dimensional auricular cartilage models were produced. These models were modified to cartilage-manipulation models: scaphal-incision, abrasion, conchal-i

Although the physiologic effects of ear deformity are negligible, the aesthetic and psychological impact on the patient can be profound. Significant ear malformations are prevalent in today's society and affect more than 5 percent of the population. Although the prominent ear results from either underdevelopment of the antihelix or an enlarged conchal bowl, the constricted ear is a product of helical down-folding and height deficiency. After a thorough evaluation, surgical management of the prominent ear must be approached in a careful, rational fashion. Although the surgeon may enjoy the wide

Although many mouse models of atopic dermatitis have been reported, few rat models have been studied. In this study, a rat chronic allergic dermatitis model was developed and evaluated as a pharmacological model of atopic dermatitis. Prominent ear thickening and scratching were induced after the application of 2,4-dinitrochlorobenzene to the right ear of Brown Norway rats 3 times per week for 3 weeks. Histopathologically, infiltration of T cells in the ear was observed on day 7, and eosinophils and mast cells were found in addition to T cells on day 21. The expression of interferon-gamma and i

The surgical treatments for prominent ears are on the basis of the approach over the basics of the deformity decrease the concha-mastoid angle and create a new antihelical fold. The author describes a new retroauricular flap to be used in the recreation of the antihelical fold and critically analyzes the cosmetic results and complications. A skin ellipse is outlined on the posterior surface of the ear. After hydrodissection with anesthetic solution in the outlined area, the skin is removed as thin as possible over the superior mid ear, preserving the underlying connective tissue and perichondr
