Ectodermal dysplasia-cutaneous syndactyly syndrome maps to chromosome 7p21.1-p14.3.

Ectodermal dysplasia syndromes are genetically heterogeneous group of disorders involving one or more of the classical ectodermal appendages (hair, nail, teeth, sweat glands) in association with anomalies of other organs or systems. In the present study a novel form of ectodermal dysplasia syndrome, ectodermal dysplasia cutaneous syndactyly (EDCS), segregating in an autosomal recessive pattern in a Pakistani family was investigated. The clinical features of the affected individuals included large prominent ear pinnae, tooth enamel hypoplasia, hypoplastic nails, bilateral partial cutaneous synd

Comparing cephaloauricular and scaphaconchal angles in prominent ear patients and control subjects.

Approximately 5% of 1-year-old children have prominent ears. The most common findings are underdevelopment or lack of the antihelical fold, overdevelopment of the concha, a scapha-conchal angle greater than 130 degrees, and a protruding lobule. This study compared the cephaloauricular and scaphaconchal angles of 15 patients with prominent ears and 15 patients in a control group. Alginate was used to create a mold of each patient's right ear. Afterward the molds were cut transversally for measurement of the angles. The first cut was made at the middle of the ear's cephalocaudal length. The seco

Non-surgical correction of deformational auricular anomalies.

Less severe congenital auricular anomalies can be corrected by appropriate splinting in the early neonatal period without anaesthetic and with minimal cost. We present a series of 46 patients affected by various ear deformities (non cryptotia, non Stahl's ear, non prominent ear) that we treated by splintage during the early neonatal period. These deformational auricular anomalies were classified according to the limitation to the external ear architecture development: vertically, horizontally and focally deformed ears. This new classification guided us in splint shaping and positioning. Excell

Psychosocial effects of otoplasty in children with prominent ears.

This study aimed to investigate changes experienced by children during the pre- and postoperative periods of prominent ear corrective surgery. A total of 30 patients with prominent ears, sometimes called "lop ears" or "cup ears," ranging in age from 6 to 14 years were consecutively enrolled in this study. Half of the patients (n = 15, 50%) were male. The inclusion criteria specified children with prominent ears and reports of evident anatomic deformity. Clinical evaluations, routine laboratory tests, and interviews were performed in the pre- and postoperative periods. To assess the dissatisfac

[A satisfaction survey of the evolution of 238 otoplasty].

PURPOSE: The prominent ear is a frequent problem that can be a source of important psychosocial troubles. The aim of this paper has been to evaluate the psychosocial repercussion, cosmetic result and degree of satisfaction in patients treated at our Institution for prominent ears in the last 4 years. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A questionnaire has been sent to 127 patients. All of them underwent Mustarde's otoplasty. RESULTS: 238 otoplasty were performed in 127 patients (87% bilateral procedures). The mean age was 8.15 +/- 3.25 years (range: 1-15 years), with a follow-up of 27.15 +/- 13.62 months

Ear reconstruction following severe complications of otoplasty.

BACKGROUND: Correction of prominent ears is one of the most common operations performed in congenital deformity. Many appropriate corrective techniques have been described. While rare, severe complications destroying ear contours can occur and their correction should follow the established principles of ear reconstruction. METHODS: A retrospective review of the notes of all patients who presented to Clinique George Bizet (1981-2007) in Paris, for correction of complications after undergoing prominent ear surgery at another facility, was performed. Each patient's age, gender, diagnosis, number

Posterior scoring of the scapha as a refinement in aesthetic otoplasty.

Numerous otoplasty techniques have been developed during the past decade. However, no single ideal technique is universally adopted. The creation of a normal scapha with prevention of retroprotrusion of the helix after creation of an aesthetically well-folded antihelix remains controversial and is regarded as a neglected aspect of otoplasty. The present study is a report of creating a natural fold of cartilage using a combination technique of cartilage incision at the border between the antihelix and scapha, with medial scoring of the scapha and lateral scoring of the antihelix region. Sutures

Posterior auricular muscle flap as an adjunct to otoplasty.

Prominent ear deformity is a common congenital ear deformity. Prominent ear deformity includes components such as valgus of concha, failure of scaphal folding, conchal hypertrophy, and prominent lobule. The deformity and the elastic properties of the ear cartilage determine the method of surgical correction in each case. Concha-mastoid suture, conchal excision, and posterior auricular muscle excision are different treatment options for mild to severe cases of conchal hypertrophy and valgus deformity. In this article we present a method of conchal excision, combined with a posterior auricular m

"Prominent ear sign" on diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging in relapsing polychondritis.

Relapsing polychondritis is a rare autoimmune disease characterized by recurrent inflammation of cartilage in multiple sites of the body, including the auricles. Central nervous system involvement appears rare. We encountered a case of relapsing polychondritis with encephalitis that could be diagnosed by the unique appearance of the auricle with signal hyperintensity on diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging.

The benefits of otoplasty for children: further evidence to satisfy the modern NHS.

SUMMARY OBJECTIVES: To take standards from, and revalidate an existing study which addressed the psychological and social outcomes following otoplasty in children [Bradbury E, Hewison J, Timmons M. Psychological and social outcome of prominent ear correction in children. Br J Plast Surg 1992;45:97-100]. The psychosocial experiences of children undergoing otoplasty at the University Hospital of North Staffordshire were retrospectively examined and compared to the cohort in the existing study. METHODS: Retrospective questionnaires were sent to all children aged 5-16 (n=101) who were on the hosp

Corrective otoplasty for symptomatic prominent ears in U.S. soldiers.

The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate U.S. Army soldiers who presented to the plastic surgery service with the inability to properly wear a government-issued Kevlar field helmet because of their prominent ear deformity. Between September 2000 and April 2002, four patients with prominent ears and helical rim skin abrasions with breakdown attributable to abutment from their helmets underwent open otoplasty with conchal bowl resection via a posterior approach. Symptomatic relief and cosmetic improvement were obtained, with no incidence of complications or recurrence during the follow-

Nuances of otoplasty: a comprehensive review of the past 20 years.

Otoplasty for the correction of the prominent ear is a heavily debated topic in Facial Plastic Surgery. This article presents the past 20 years of literature on the topic in a concise and organized manner. The greatest area of focus is on the finer nuances between cartilage-sparing and cartilage-incising techniques. In addition, some of the latest research on anesthesia techniques, nonoperative approaches, and social issues are discussed.

Repositioning of posterior auricular muscle combined with conventional otoplasty: a personal technique.

Prominent ears are the most common deformity of the external ear in children. Since 1881 various treatments have been described but the choice of procedure still remains at the surgeon's preference. A posterior auricular muscle malposition is frequently present in prominent ear deformity even though this muscle shows only a rudimentary function in man. This article presents a technique to reposition the posterior auricular muscle as an adjunct to conventional otoplasty. A quadrangular cartilage paddle, where the muscle inserts, is raised with the muscle as a chondro-muscular flap that can be a

Otoplasty: sequencing the operation for improved results.

: After studying this article, the participant should be able to: 1. Understand the anatomy and embryology of the external ear. 2. Understand the anatomic causes of the prominent ear. 3. Understand the operative maneuvers used to shape the external ear. 4. Be able to sequence the otoplasty for consistent results. 5. Understand the possible complications of the otoplasty procedure. Correction of prominent ears is a common plastic surgical procedure. Proper execution of the surgical techniques is dependent on the surgeon's understanding of the surgical procedure. This understanding is best found
