BACKGROUND: Malignant tumor removal can cause extensive lower lip tissue loss, affecting speech, expression, and swallowing functions.
METHODS: We describe our experience with two cases using a modification of the nasolabial flap technique for total lower lip reconstruction. This approach employs two long strip-shaped flaps rotated to reconstruct the entire lower lip, which helps mitigate functional limitations caused by microstomia.
RESULTS: Two patients underwent successful reconstruction with normal lip function, no microstomia, and restored eating ability. Partial vermillion remained vis

Microstomia, often observed following facial burn injuries, can hinder functional activities such as eating, speaking, dental care, and medical procedures such as intubation. To address these challenges, microstomia orthoses (MO) are used to increase mouth opening and function. Many versions of MOs have been described from hand-crafted to commercially available models. However, proposed options can be quite expensive based on fabrication time or materials, and not all models can be customized for patient's needs. 3D printing presents a promising alternative for fabricating MOs, addressing many

This case report describes a unique approach to reconstructing microtia in a patient with microtia and craniofacial microsomia. Microtia is a congenital outer ear deformity that can vary in severity, from minor abnormalities to complete absence of the ear. The traditional methods for microtia reconstruction are autologous reconstruction using the patient's rib cartilage or alloplastic reconstruction using porous polyethylene. Autologous reconstruction typically begins around age six to 10 years of age when the rib cage is sufficiently large enough, while alloplastic reconstruction may be perfo

Microstomia, which is characterized by reduced oral opening, poses significant challenges in prosthesis fabrication, particularly during impression-taking. This technical report describes a novel workflow combining conventional techniques with digital technology to refabricate a removable partial denture for a 65-year-old man with microstomia. The process utilized 3D scan data of the patient's previous prosthesis to create a 3D-printed record base, eliminating the need for full-arch impressions and reducing the burden on both the patient and practitioner. The transparent printed base enabled p

Craniofacial clefts are very rare congenital anomalies with an incidence of around 1.4 to 4.85 per 100,000 live-births. Our hospital managed four unique cases of Tessier's cleft between 2022 and 2024. They comprise a patient with Tessier No. 14 cleft and a fronto-nasal-ethmoidal meningoencephalocele, second patient with Tessier No. 10 and 4 clefts and coloboma over the upper eyelids, third patient with Tessier No. 7 cleft and macrostomia, and the fourth patient with Tessier No. 14 cleft and hypertelorism. Our series emphasizes the importance of individualized surgical planning, multidisciplina

Background: Type II DNA topoisomerases (EC5.99.1.3) are enzymes that catalyze topological changes during DNA replication and gene transcription in an ATP-dependent manner. Vertebrates have two isoforms: topoisomerase IIα and β. Type II topoisomerase β is encoded by TOP2B. For TOP2B, a number of germline pathogenic variants have been identified as causative for human diseases, including Hoffman syndrome, ablepharon-macrostomia syndrome with immunodeficiency, B-cell immunodeficiency, distal limb anomalies, and urogenital malformations syndrome. To date, only 14 patients with the above diseases f

The Tessier number 7 cleft is a rare congenital anomaly making up between 0.3% and 1.0% facial clefts. When combined with a concomitant unilateral cleft lip deformity, we are only aware of 1 previously reported case. We report the presentation, treatment course and long-term follow-up of 3 patients with combined Tessier number 7 cleft, unilateral cleft lip and craniofacial microsomia. All patients received multidisciplinary treatment at our Craniofacial Centre with a minimum follow-up of 29 years. This study demonstrates the phenotype, treatment philosophy, lessons learnt, and principles of re

Cytomorphological evaluation of peripheral blood provides information about the health status of animals, in addition to being indicators of environmental contamination. However, reference data regarding the size and shape of elasmobranch blood cells is limited. This work aimed to determine the morphological and morphometric of Potamotrygon motoro and Potamotrygon orbignyi blood cells. The stingrays were captured in white water environments in the lower Solimões River region, state of Amazonas, Brazil. Blood was obtained through puncture of the branchial artery using syringes with 10% EDTA. Mo

Congenital midline cervical cleft (CMCC) is a rare developmental anomaly of the anterior neck, often misdiagnosed due to its similarity to other cervical malformations. It results from impaired midline fusion of the branchial arches, leading to a linear skin defect with a fibrotic cord and, in some cases, a sinus tract. Left untreated, CMCC can cause progressive contracture, restricted neck mobility, and aesthetic deformities. This review examines the embryological basis, clinical presentation, histopathological characteristics, differential diagnosis, and surgical management of CMCC, with a f

Oblique facial clefts are a rare entity and can be associated with palatal anomalies like synechiae caused by amniotic bands. Their treatment is individualized following sound reconstructive surgical principles. This is a case report of a 15-month-old child with cleft palate in which the right palatal shelf was represented by a tongue-like projection, associated with macrostomia and bilateral medial and lateral oro-ocular clefts. The palatal cleft was closed in two stages and the oblique clefts in the first stage. At 4 years of age, the velopharyngeal incompetence was addressed by a superiorly

Cheilitis glandularis (CG) is a rare chronic inflammatory condition of unknown etiology affecting the minor salivary glands of the lips. It presents as redness and dilatation of the ostia of minor salivary glands on the vermilion border, with variable degrees of macrocheilia and eversion of the lower lip. A 36-year-old male patient had a chief complaint of burning sensation, with persistent swelling of the lower lip for two years and gradual appearance of ulcerations, crustations and intermittent oozing of liquid. Being a shepherd by occupation, he was constantly exposed to sunlight, suggestin

The gastrointestinal (GI) tract is seriously affected by systemic sclerosis (SSc), due to fibrosis and persistent inflammation. Patients with GI involvement frequently exhibit poor nutritional status, which affects disease burden and quality of life. The aim of the present review was to discuss all nutritional issues in SSc and serve as a primer for the nutritional assessment of patients with scleroderma. Patients with SSc suffer from GI impairments that affect the oral cavity, esophagus, stomach, and small and large intestines. Symptomatology includes microstomia, xerostomia, dysphagia, reflu

OBJECTIVES: Limited-cutaneous systemic sclerosis (lcSSc), formerly known as CREST syndrome (calcinosis, Raynaud phenomenon, esophageal dysmotility, scleroderma, and telangiectasias) is an auto-immune connective tissue disease characterized by cutaneous fibrosis and systemic fibrovascular dysfunction. The cutaneous fibrosis of lcSSc is commonly limited to acral sites, with perioral involvement seen in 70%-85% of cases. Patients often seek treatment of lcSSc-associated microstomia for functional and cosmetic purposes. Treatments for the cutaneous sclerosis in systemic sclerosis (SSc) include top
