A dermal sinus/fistula is a common condition; the relevant department should be consulted for appropriate treatment. It is important for radiologists to have adequate knowledge of these conditions to provide the correct diagnosis and recommend subsequent management. This review describes the following lesions: preauricular sinus, midline sinus of the upper lip, nasal dermoid sinus cyst, cheek fistula, first branchial cleft anomaly/sublingual branchial cleft anomaly, thyroglossal duct cyst/fistula, lateral cervical sinus/fistula, congenital dermal sinus/fistula of the anterior chest region, con

Pyriform sinus fistula (PSF) is an anomaly that can arise due to failure of involution of the third or fourth branchial cleft during embryogenesis. It can manifest clinically as sinuses, cysts, or abscesses in the neck and is common in childhood. Herein, we describe a neonate who presented with neck swelling and respiratory distress, which was secondary to a fourth branchial pouch sinus. Physical examination revealed swollen areas in the posterolateral pharyngeal wall and on the external left side of the neck. Computed tomography imaging showed a left-sided mass that was filled with air and fl

Objective: To discuss the misdiagnosis of pyriform sinus fistula and to better understand this kind of illness. Methods: The analysis was based on twenty-eight patients with congenital pyriform sinus fistula aged from 11 months to 14 years, with the median age of 5 years, and who were surgically treated from January 2013 to January 2017 in Kunming Children's Hospital.Twenty patients were misdiagnosed in other hospital. After the routine examination of neck ultrasound and enhanced CT, internal fistula was found by self-retaining laryngoscope, traced by methylene blue, and excised by high ligatio

Branchial cleft anomalies are a common cause of congenital neck masses and can present as a cyst, sinus, or fistula. A comprehensive understanding of the embryologic basis of these anomalies aids in diagnosis and surgical excision. Fistulas tend to present at an earlier age than sinuses or cysts, with most lesions presenting as either a neck mass, draining sinus, or recurrent infections. The eventual management of each is complete surgical excision, which is curative. A history of recurrent preoperative infections leads to a higher rate of recurrence.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Branchial abnormalities occur when there is disturbance in the maturation of the branchial apparatus during fetal development. Branchial anomalies are congenital lesions usually present in childhood, even if they can be diagnosed later for enlargement or infection. A correct diagnosis will lead to proper management: complete surgical excision is the treatment of choice. The purpose of this article is to present clinical features, diagnostic methods and surgical treatment of branchial anomalies in childhood, based on a series of 50 patients.
METHODS: We conducted a retrosp

UNLABELLED: The branchial arches are the embryological precursors of the face, neck and pharynx. Anomalies of the branchial arches are the second most common congenital lesions of the head and neck in children, with second branchial arch anomalies by far the most common. Clinically, these congenital anomalies may present as cysts, sinus tracts, fistulae or cartilaginous remnants with typical clinical and radiological findings. We review the normal embryological development of the branchial arches and the anatomical structures of the head and neck that derive from each arch. The typical clinica

The patient complained of finding on the right side of the neck fistula with discharge nine years. In recently, fistula spills significantly increased compared with the previous. Special physical examination: Right sternocleidomastoid middle 1/3 front border is seen here in a small fistula, translucence jelly secretion were spilling out when squeezeing the fistula, no smell. Ultrasound: On the right side of the upper cervical skin to submandibular gland rear could see tubular low echo area. MRI: Visible on the right side of the neck tube signal, after the submandibular gland rear. Three-dimens

Pyriform sinus malformations represent rare third and fourth branchial anomalies. Fistulae at the latter site were initially described and make up less than 1 % of all brachial anomalies. They may be discovered incidentally, or may present as a neck mass with recurrent infection, dysphagia, or airway compromise, and can be an unusual cause of dysphonia in infant and children. Here, we present a case of third branchial cyst located in pharyngeal wall of the left pyriform sinus which presented with dysphonia since birth in a 6-year-old girl. Transoral CO2 laser excision was carried out successfu

Branchiogen anomalies represent a heterogeneous group of developmental abnormalities, they arise from incomplete obliteration of branchial clefts and pouches during embriogenesis. Clinically they can present as a cyst, fistula or sinus. Second cleft lesions account for 95% of the branchial anomalies. Second branchial cleft cysts are usually located in the neck, along the anterior border of the stenocleidomastoid muscle, but they can be anywhere along the course of the second branchial fistula from the tonsillar fossa to the supraclavicular region. Their presence in the nasopharynx is extremely

BACKGROUND: The presence of a branchial fistula with communication both internally and externally: a 'true' branchial fistula is rare, and may arise in the context of autosomal dominant conditions such as branchiootic syndrome and branchiootorenal syndrome.
STUDY: We discuss the case of a true branchial fistula, which recurred after initial surgical excision, in a patient with branchiootic syndrome. The residual tract was dissected in a second operation through stepladder neck incisions and removed in toto via an intraoral approach. No renal abnormalities were detected on investigation with u

Anomalies of the first branchial cleft (FBC) are uncommon, and recognizing them can be difficult. Although present at birth, many cases do not become evident until later in childhood or adolescence, with an initial clinical presentation in adulthood being encountered only rarely. Typically, FBC anomalies present as a unilateral cyst, sinus, or fistula associated with the external auditory canal, or with swelling or an inflammatory opening in the peri-auricular/parotid area. They are commonly misdiagnosed and are often treated inadequately before being excised completely. A 40-year-old woman pr

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the fourth branchial abnormity and its managements.
METHOD: Twelve cases of the fourth branchial abnormity treated between January 2005 and April 2012 were reviewed.
RESULTS: Dissection of the recurrent laryngeal nerve was done in all cases. Partial thyroidectomy was performed in 10 cases, and 2 cases of them received selective neck dissection including level II, III, IV and VI. The abnormity lesions were found to pass posterior to the thyroid glands in the 10 cases and to pass through the inferior constrictor muscle into the pyriform sinus in 7 cases of them. The i

Brachial cleft cyst is a congenital anomaly arising from persistent elements of branchial apparatus. It may assume the form of cyst, sinus or fistula and constitutes 30% of all congenital anomalies of the neck region. Brachial cleft cyst is usually recognized in patients before the 5th year of age, but it may appear in patients between 20 and 40, when it enlarges owing to infection. It reveals then as a smooth, resilient tumor in lateral region of the neck. Ultrasonography, computerized tomography and magnetic resonance may be used to evaluate and differentiate these lesions as well as to reve

Objectives. Pyriform sinus fistulae arise from disturbances in the development of the fetal third and fourth branchial pouches and are predominantly found on the left side. We report the rare case of a right-sided pyriform sinus fistula presenting as a lateral neck abscess. Study Design. Case report. Methods. A 24-year-old woman presented with a two-week history of right-sided neck abscess. A fluoroscopic sinogram revealed a fistulous tract extending from the abscess to the apex of the right pyriform sinus. It was determined that the fistula was likely a third or fourth branchial remnant, a ra
