OBJECTIVE: To describe the clinical and demographic characteristics of systemic sclerosis (SSc) in a Jordanian cohort and assess patients' psychological well-being, quality of life, and functional disability.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study included all consecutive SSc patients seen at a single rheumatology clinic at Jordan University Hospital, Amman, between January and October 2023. Demographic and clinical data were collected via a structured questionnaire. Depression was assessed with the PHQ-9, and fibromyalgia screening with the FiRST questionnaire. Disease activity was measured usi

Lip amputations in children may require urgent microsurgical management. Here we report a salvage procedure with partial survival following lower lip and chin replantation after a trampoline accident. Total amputation was managed with inferior labial artery anastomosis; however, venous drainage was not reestablished, necessitating leech therapy. Despite arterial revisions, 75 % of the lip and 25 % of the chin were lost by post-operative day 14. Reconstruction with a combined right Karapandzic flap and left Camille Bernard flap was performed one month later, supplemented by mesotherapy and nano

INTRODUCTION: Patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc) or morphea increasingly inquire about cosmetic procedures, as these conditions often result in disfiguring cutaneous manifestations such as microstomia, thin lips, sclerotic plaques or skin atrophy. Traditionally, rheumatologists prioritize immunosuppression and disease control but often fail to address aesthetic concerns. Among available interventions, hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers offer a minimally invasive approach, yet there is not enough information regarding efficacy and safety in this population.

INTRODUCTION: Hereditary neuralgic amyotrophy (HNA) is a rare autosomal dominant recurrent focal neuropathy characterized by acute episodes of severe neuropathic pain followed by muscle weakness and atrophy, most commonly affecting the brachial plexus. Pathogenic variants in SEPTIN9 with c.316C>T (p. Arg106Trp; NM_001113491.2) missense mutation corresponding to c.262C>T (p. Arg88Trp; NM_006640.4) constituting a recurrent hotspot that accounts for approximately 55% of HNA families in which a pathogenic SEPTIN9 variant can be identified. Although well documented in Caucasian and some Asian popul

Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is a hereditary connective tissue disorder characterized by bone fragility and Type I collagen defects. Although dentinogenesis imperfecta (DI) is a classic manifestation, patients with OI may experience significant dental deterioration even in its absence due to inherent dentinal weakness. This report describes the multidisciplinary full-mouth rehabilitation of a 18-year-old male with OI and a complex medical history including autoimmune hepatitis and seizure disorder. The patient presented with extensive caries, failure of previous restorations, multiple impacted

Reconstruction of moderate lower lip vermilion defects remains challenging. We present a novel single-stage technique, the bilateral pedicled mucosal sliding advancement flap (BPM-SAF), which utilizes a horizontal relaxing incision above the vestibular sulcus to advance adjacent mucosa laterally. This retrospective single-center case series evaluated 10 subjects undergoing BPM-SAF reconstruction following tumor resection. Over a mean follow-up of 13.3 months (range, 1 to 31 months), all mucosal flaps survived completely. Donor sites healed smoothly via secondary epithelialization without infec

Nasolabial flaps are a reliable option for oral commissure reconstruction due to their robust vascularity and minimal donor site morbidity. However, conventional methods that involve folding of the flap into the oral cavity usually lead to bulky commissures and restricted mouth opening. Here, we report a case of bilateral oral commissure defects in an older patient with suspected verrucous carcinoma. Bilateral inferiorly pedicled nasolabial tunnel flaps were used for reconstruction after tumor resection. The flaps were transferred intraorally via subcutaneous tunnels to preserve oral function

INTRODUCTION: Freeman-Burian syndrome (FBS) is a congenital myopathic craniofacial condition that often includes features outside the craniofacial region. Among the craniofacial manifestations of FBS, the severely reduced oral aperture stands out as one of the most functionally limiting features of the condition. This marked constriction compromises nutritional intake, speech clarity, oral health maintenance, and airway access. Additionally, the distinctive "pursed-lip/whistling" facial appearance imposes considerable psychological and social challenges.

It is known that beta-lactam antibiotics can conjugate to lysine and histidine residues on proteins via the carbonyl group of the opened beta-lactam ring. However, it is not known which proteins these drugs target and there is little work addressing whether conjugation is preferential for some proteins over others or if conjugation has functional consequences for the protein. We have previously shown that the beta-lactam antibiotic benzylpenicillin (BP) conjugates to IFN-gamma and reduces its activity. This interaction demonstrates selectivity, as BP does not bind to IL-4. Here, we extend our

BACKGROUND: Chronic refractory breathlessness is distressing, disabling, and common in advanced disease. Unpaid/family carers provide support for patients, but often lack knowledge and confidence, experiencing anxiety which can lead to crises. The Learning about Breathlessness programme (LaB) sought to address this. Working with carers and clinical experts, the LaB1 Study identified six topics carers of patients with breathlessness due to cancer or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) want to learn about breathlessness, and how they want to learn. To accommodate carers' varied learning

Erasmus syndrome is an uncommon condition marked by the onset of systemic sclerosis (SSc) due to extended exposure to silica. In this case, we highlight the significant health risks associated with silica exposure in artisanal mining (galamsey), leading to the development of Erasmus syndrome. We present the case of a 33-year-old male artisanal miner with a 14-year work history who presented with a 2-year history of recurrent cough, difficulty breathing, and fever. He later developed hypopigmentation and skin thickening on his face, neck, torso, and knees, along with a productive cough and low-

PLAIN ENGLISH SUMMARY: There are new ways to engage people with science and research but many patient support groups and charitable organisations still hold traditional meetings to provide updates on their activities and to report new developments in their field of interest. These meetings often feature presentations given by medical doctors or, in the case of research-focussed organisations, by research scientists.Receiving feedback from people who are confused and sometimes upset by some types of information, and the way it is presented at meetings, made us think about better ways for resear

The month of March is dedicated to Colon Cancer Awareness. Worldwide, colorectal cancer (CRC) incidence has been on the rise. It is currently the third most common cancer in men (746,000 cases, 10.0% of the total) and the second in women (614,000 cases, 9.2% of the total).1 Arecent meta-analysis reported a 61% risk reduction in CRC incidence with colonoscopy.2 Unlike screening programs for breast and prostate cancers, not only has CRC screening reduced mortality from colon cancer and detected early CRC, it has also decreased the incidence of CRC through detection and removal of pre-cancerous l

Lips play a crucial role in facial aesthetics, and lip defects not only impact appearance but also function. Repairing lip defects has long been a big challenge for surgeons. Currently, "V" shaped excisions are commonly employed in lip tumor surgeries, encompassing both the lesion and surrounding normal tissue, which facilitates wound closure. However, this technique may result in the loss of transverse lip width, leading to microstomia and affecting aesthetics. Additionally, the removal of a significant amount of normal tissue can result in noticeable vertical scars. To address these limitati

Full-thickness defects of the lower lip pose a considerable challenge for reconstructive surgeons. The primary objective should be the restoration of oral sphincter competence, achieving both functionally and aesthetically favorable outcomes. For defects involving more than one-third of the lower lip, multiple locoregional flaps have been described as the optimal solution due to their color and texture match. Unfortunately, complications such as reduction of buccal circumference or microstomia have been reported, impacting patients' quality of life. For defects exceeding 80% of the lower lip,

There have been three previously reported cases of hypomandibular faciocranial syndrome (HFS), which is characterized by dysgnathia (an absent or hypoplastic mandible), a protruding lower face, microstomia, normally positioned ears, and craniosynostosis. The dysgnathia and oro-pharyngo-laryngeal abnormalities in HFS are virtually identical to those found in the agnathia-otocephaly complex (AOC), of which severe forms can include holoprosencephaly (HPE), synotia-melotia, and situs abnormalities, but not craniosynostosis. We report an infant with HFS who also presented with situs inversus totali

Erasmus syndrome (ES) is a rare condition characterized by the link between crystalline silica exposure, with or without silicosis, and systemic sclerosis (SSc). Although first noted over a century ago, its underlying mechanisms remain unclear. However, it is indistinguishable from idiopathic SSc in the general population. Its clinical presentation is heterogeneous, depending on the affected systems, with notable features, including skin fibrosis, microstomia, telangiectasia, Raynaud's phenomenon, arthralgia, and interstitial lung disease. Currently, there is no unified consensus on its treatm

Microstomia following orofacial and neck burns with subsequent contractures poses a significant challenge to the anesthesiologist as well as the plastic surgeon. Fibrosed external nares, microstomia, and contracture bands make a difficult airway. Deformed facial structure and raw area of burns make ventilation difficult. One of the significant causes of morbidity and mortality under anesthesia is the "cannot intubate, cannot ventilate" scenario. Further reconstruction of oral commissures in such cases is always challenging because it provides good functional and acceptable aesthetic results. H
