Upper Lip Reconstruction With the Anchor Flap: A Modified Technique of the Reverse Yu's Flap.

Various reconstruction methods using local flaps have been reported for upper lip defects. The reverse Yu's flap is a reconstruction method consisting of three flaps including the advancement flap, rotating flap, and mucosal flap. It offers the advantage of low risk of microstomia occurrence because this method restores the form of the vermilion using buccal mucosa as a mucosal flap. Herein, we report the case of a 77-year-old Japanese man who underwent reconstruction using a modified reverse Yu's flap for a defect following the resection of right upper lip basal cell carcinoma. The patient pr

The Establishment of a Treatment Protocol for the Reconstruction of Mid-Sized Defects in Lip Cancer Using Combinations with the Abbe Flap.

Background: When defects occur in the lips due to conditions such as lip cancer, it is essential to reconstruct them both functionally and aesthetically, given the vital roles that lips play in communication, nutrition, and overall appearance. Various flap techniques are available for lip reconstruction, and the surgical method should be chosen based on the location and extent of the defect. Methods: This article discusses two cases of successful lip reconstruction using a combination of the Abbe flap and additional flaps, tailored to the extent of the defects. In case 1, a 52-year-old female

Surgical Management of Microstomia: A Comprehensive Review of Treatment Options.

BACKGROUND: Microstomia is characterized by a reduced oral aperture, leading to impairments in speech, feeding, dental hygiene, and facial expressions. Nonsurgical treatments offer limited benefits for mild cases although surgical interventions have been shown to yield better outcomes. However, the unique anatomical challenges and limited availability of adjacent tissue present obstacles in surgical management of this condition. This review aims to provide a comprehensive summary of the reported surgical techniques for microstomia management and discuss their specific indications, advantages,

An International Online Survey on Oral Hygiene Issues in Patients with Epidermolysis Bullosa.

Background: Inherited epidermolysis bullosa (EB) includes a group of rare genetic disorders affecting the skin and mucous membranes. These disorders are characterized by extreme fragility and blister formation after minimal or no trauma. Oral and systemic manifestations vary by subtype; the more severe forms often present with extensive intra-oral blistering, scarring, microstomia, vestibular obliteration, ankyloglossia, and-in some cases-oral cancer. This study aims to collect data on oral-health practices and challenges in people with EB to inform preventive strategies and dental care. Metho

Two strip flap technique for total lower lip reconstruction: case report.

BACKGROUND: Malignant tumor removal can cause extensive lower lip tissue loss, affecting speech, expression, and swallowing functions. METHODS: We describe our experience with two cases using a modification of the nasolabial flap technique for total lower lip reconstruction. This approach employs two long strip-shaped flaps rotated to reconstruct the entire lower lip, which helps mitigate functional limitations caused by microstomia. RESULTS: Two patients underwent successful reconstruction with normal lip function, no microstomia, and restored eating ability. Partial vermillion remained vis

Efficacy of a 3D-printed static progressive microstomia orthosis in increasing mouth opening and function following burn injury.

Microstomia, often observed following facial burn injuries, can hinder functional activities such as eating, speaking, dental care, and medical procedures such as intubation. To address these challenges, microstomia orthoses (MO) are used to increase mouth opening and function. Many versions of MOs have been described from hand-crafted to commercially available models. However, proposed options can be quite expensive based on fabrication time or materials, and not all models can be customized for patient's needs. 3D printing presents a promising alternative for fabricating MOs, addressing many

Refabrication of a Removable Partial Prosthesis Using a 3D-Printed Record Base for a Patient With Microstomia.

Microstomia, which is characterized by reduced oral opening, poses significant challenges in prosthesis fabrication, particularly during impression-taking. This technical report describes a novel workflow combining conventional techniques with digital technology to refabricate a removable partial denture for a 65-year-old man with microstomia. The process utilized 3D scan data of the patient's previous prosthesis to create a 3D-printed record base, eliminating the need for full-arch impressions and reducing the burden on both the patient and practitioner. The transparent printed base enabled p
