[The problem of pre-prosthetic surgical procedures following neoplasm surgery in the maxillofacial area].

The author reports of 215 patients with oral malignant tumour of whom 21.5% needed preprosthetic-surgical measures. The indication for preprosthetic-surgical intervention is determined by the site and the size of the tumour and by the method used for the primary operation. Some preferred surgical techniques are discussed.

Mobius syndrome and limb abnormalities.

Most ophthalmologists are aware of the cranial nerve dysfunctions that have been associated with the facial diplegias of Mobius syndrome. However, many are not aware of the combined limb deficiencies and cranial nerve dysfunctions. Limb malformations have been associated with a spectrum of oral facial anomalies consisting of micrognathia, hypoglossia, microstomia, hypodontia, oral bands, and dysarthria. It has been suggested that the differences which exists between these entities may in fact represent a common etiology. The variability may be related to an intrauterine insult at slightly diff

[The problem of taking dental impressions in acquired microstomia].

Two cases of severe cicatricial atresia of the oral rima with total edentia are reported. These patients present considerable problems when impressions of the dental arches have to be obtained. To make the labial tissues more elastic and in the attempt to increase rimal space, a perilabial collar of resin is made. Using the normal silicon-based synthetic elastomers, a first mould can be obtained directly in the mouth. This in its turn is filled with a more fluid elastic material and set in the mouth. From this initial impression, a chalk model can be obtained and from this an individual silico

Anthropometry of the face in lateral facial dysplasia: the unilateral form.

The skull, face and ears of 46 patients with the unilateral form of lateral facial dysplasia were examined at the Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto, using anthropometric methods for the purpose of contributing to the morphology of this syndrome. The classical picture of unilateral facial asymmetry with microtia was found in 13 cases (28.3%). The study showed bilaterally defective mandibular arc measurements in 28 per cent of the cases. The facial damage was associated in 15 per cent with ears normal in size but defective in location, level, and shape. The anthropometric examination revealed

[Problems posed by difficult intubations].

The difficulties of tracheal intubation are mainly encountered in facial surgery and E.N.T. surgery, but they may nevertheless, occur in any form of surgery. The indications for nasal intubation, without visible glottis, the problems raised and the means of solving them, whilst respecting safety precautions, are briefly recalled.

Splinting electrical burns of the mouth in children.

A mouth splint has been designed tp be worn through the healing period of an electrical burn of the mouth. The splint is custom-fitted for each child, and it is easily removed. Six children have been so treated and followed up for 4 years. The results to date have been excellent in preventing microstomia.

[Method of correction of microstomia and deviation of the mouth angles by rotation of trapeziform and triangular flaps of the mouth mucosa].

In the paper, the author suggests an essentially new method of dilation of the oral orifice and elimination of mouth angles deviations basing on the principle of new redistribution of local tissues by means of rotation of a trapeziform graft of the mucosa with its submucous layer from the buccal and adoral region. In this method one uses more adequate tissues, which reserves in case of microstomia are located in the buccal and adoral region. The successful utilization in 60 patients of the suggested method of elimination of microstomia arising due to different causes enabled the author to reco

Structural goals in craniofacial surgery.

Major craniofacial abnormalities can be considered as a group for purposes of operative planning. Known normal relations define what is abnormal and indicate goals to be achieved with the craniofacial operative procedures. The principle syndromes with significant facial structural changes amenable to such surgical corrective procedures are craniofacial stenoses, hypertelorism, mandibulofacial dysostoses, median facial clefts, residua of encephaloceles, and trauma. Deformities primarily involve the middle and upper thirds of the face. In planning, abnormal relations and structures must be clear

Habilitation of severe craniofacial anomalies--the challenge of new surgical procedures: an NIDR workshop.

Three NIDR-sponsored workshops were conducted with the goal of identifying research needs in treatment and basic sciences relating to a group of severe craniofacial anomalies that are now correctable by new radical surgical procedures. Experts in the fields of developmental biology, neurosurgery and reconstructive craniofacial surgery discussed areas of investigation dealing with etiology, prevention and treatment that are most likely to result in clincally-useful information. In addition the establishment of craniofacial anomalies centers for data collection, treatment and research was examin

Craniocarpotarsal dysplasia syndrome (whistling face syndrome). Case reports and survey of clinical findings.

Case histories of two patients with the whistling face syndrome are presented. The most striking features are microstomia, midface hypoplasia, scoliosis, and retarded growth. Family histories were unremarkable, except possibly in Patient K. B.'s family, where three miscarriages in six pregnancies were noted. Biochemical and chromosome analysis did not reveal obvious changes. The genetics implied a sporadic inheritance pattern.

[Mouth opening limitations due to soft tissue lesions].

Mouth opening limitations following on soft tissue lesions are subdivided according to aetiology into collagen disease connectival lesions, cutaneous and mucosa lesions consequent on the action of physical agents and, finally, cicatricial lesions of the cheeks and lips as a result of surgery for cancer or trauma. The commonest forms of plastic surgery used to correct such lesions are reviewed.

Aplasia of the first and second branchial arches.

This case report of an otocephalic monster gave the opportunity to study severe orofacial anomalies with a view to clarifying the present position in regard to the so-called first and second arch syndrome. Finding the causal mechanism of this syndrome will eventually lead to prevention and, it is hoped, eradication of this syndrome.
