Commissuroplasty Using Split Dry Lips: A Case Report.

Commissuroplasty is a procedure that is performed to correct deformities at the corner of the mouth or oral commissure. Herein, we report a case of postoperative microstomia treated with commissuroplasty using split dry lips. In a surgical procedure, the dry lip was divided into orbicularis oris muscle cutaneous flaps and transpositioned into the cleft formed. The deformation of the corners of the mouth improved, and mouth opening improved enough to wear dentures. We believe that this method enables commissuroplasty that combines aesthetics with function.

Prosthetic Rehabilitation of Rhino Orbital Mucormycosis Associated with COVID-19: A Case Series.

Mucormycosis, a rare fungal infection seen in diabetes, is now very frequent owing to the deadly triad of COVID-19 infection, diabetes, and rampant use of corticosteroids. Immediate management revolves around therapeutic drugs like antifungals, antibiotics, and aggressive surgical debridement. The cases described in the article explain prosthetic rehabilitation of maxillectomy defects. The findings focus on prosthetic rehabilitation of patients with acquired maxillectomy defects after mucormycotic necrosis post-COVID-19 infection and the techniques to overcome the complications like lack of su

Management of Edentulous Microstomia Patient: A Case Report and Classification System.

Microstomia is an abnormally reduced oral aperture. In the literature, it is not classified by any particular size criteria, rather defined by its effects on function and esthetics. Prosthodontic management of edentulous patients with microstomia is a challenging task. Use of conventional methods for recording an impression and fabricating prosthesis is not effective in such patients. To fabricate well-fitting prosthesis, accuracy of impression recording important anatomic landmarks is essential. Formation of an exacting custom tray and diagnostic cast is critical for final impression accuracy

Oral manifestations of autoimmune polyglandular syndrome type 1.

AIMS: Autoimmune polyglandular syndrome type I (APS-I) is a rare condition of autosomal recessive and monogenic inheritance, which is characterized clinically by at least two signs of the classic triad: mucocutaneous candidosis, hypoparathyroidism, and Addison's disease. This study aims to report the oral manifestations of APS-I in a 42-year-old woman, who attended the Special Care Dentistry Center. METHODS AND RESULTS: The patient presented with hypoparathyroidism, diabetes mellitus, and autoimmune hepatitis. Chronic hyperplastic candidosis (CHC) was the main oral manifestation and it was di

Studies on teratogenic effect of ochratoxin A given via mouldy diet in mice in various sensitive periods of the pregnancy and the putative protection of phenylalanine.

Embryotoxic and teratogenic effects were found in OTA-treated pregnant Swiss albino mice, which were particularly strong at OTA contamination levels of 20 ppm (corresponding to 2.8 mg OTA/kg bw per day), when fed between the day 7 and day 12 of the pregnancy. Slighter embryotoxic and teratogenic effects were found when OTA was given up to day 7 or after day 12 of mice pregnancy. The feed levels of 10 ppm OTA (corresponding to 1.4 mg OTA/kg bw per day) have a significantly weaker embryotoxic and teratogenic effects on pregnant mice and no such effects were found at 5 ppm OTA (corresponding to 0

Prenatal phenotypic spectrum of full trisomy 18 in an Indian cohort.

Trisomy 18 or Edward syndrome is a chromosomal disorder due to the presence of an extra chromosome 18. We describe the phenotype of five fetuses at different gestational ages, each highlighting a different aspect of trisomy 18. The clinical spectrum included increased nuchal translucency, fetal hydrops, congenital malformations of the central nervous system, congenital heart disease, radial ray defects, and characteristic facial gestalt. We made a comparison of prenatal ultrasonography and the autopsy findings. The fetal autopsy defined the craniofacial and digit anomalies better compared with

Clinical and histopathological improvement of scleromyxedema-induced microstomia after hyaluronidase injection.

INTRODUCTION: Scleromyxedema is a rare primary cutaneous mucinosis characterized by numerous firm, waxy, confluent papules. Recently, intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) is accepted by many authors as the first-line treatment option for severe cases. We report a 69-year-old male patient who has been suffering from scleromyxedema, with reduced mouth opening. He has been on a high-dose IVIG regime for 5 years. METHODS: The patient stated that he had difficulty in wearing and removing his dentures because of reduced mouth opening lately. Before considering to add any other immunosuppressants to hi

Advances in prenatal diagnosis of fetal otocephaly by 3D imaging.

The case presented here shows the rare diagnosis of fetal otocephaly with lethal prognosis due to impossible airway management after birth. Otocephaly is characterised by fetal agnathia, microstomia and synotia. As in our case, otocephaly is usually not recognised until the third trimester and leads to challenging clinical situations and decision making.A woman in her 30s presented to our tertiary hospital at 27 weeks of gestation because of an unexplained polyhydramnios. 3D imaging illustrated the complex syndrome of otocephaly and helped understand the present disease patterns. After prematu

Oral Alterations in Heritable Epidermolysis Bullosa: A Clinical Study and Literature Review.

Epidermolysis bullosa (EB) is a group of skin disorders with skin fragility characterized by blistering from minimal mechanical trauma with rupture at the dermoepidermal junction. There are four major classical heritable EB types, due to mutations in as many as 20 distinct genes: EB simplex (EBS), junctional EB (JEB), dystrophic EB (DEB), and Kindler EB (KEB). This study is aimed at reporting case series on patients (N = 8; males, n = 5 and females, n = 3, age range 12-68 years) affected by EB and performs a review of the literature on this topic. This group of disorders can affect oral soft a

A novel technique of reconstruction of vermilion by pedicled myomucosal labial vestibular flap in traumatic defect of lower lip.

We present a new technique of reconstruction of a partial defect of vermilion in a case of post traumatic defect of lower lip. The vermilion defect was reconstructed by the myomucosal flap taken from the labial side of lip posterior and below the anterior lip defect. The lower rounded part of this 3 cm × 2 cm rectangular flap was brought on the outer anterior lip defect through a hole made by splitting the orbicularis oris muscle below the vermilion and its lower end was rotated upward to reconstruct the defect in the anterior and inferior part of vermilion. The secondary defect on the inner l

Custom Sectional Impression Tray With Sectional Handle for Microstomia Patients.

Microstomia presents a unique challenge to the dentist as well as the patient. Microstomia patients often face difficulty in inserting or removing removable dental prostheses due to constricted opening of the oral cavity. Dentists often face difficulty in inserting impression trays in these patients because of the limited mouth opening. Standard impression procedures need to be modified in such patients. This article describes a simple design for the fabrication of a sectional handle for a definitive impression in microstomia patients. The sectional handle could be sterilized and reused.

Difficult Airway Management in a Patient With Post-burn Contracture Neck.

During reconstructive interventions in patients presenting with severe post-burn mento-sternal scar contracture, securing the airway forms a critical part of management. Extreme contracture is more likely to develop in patients who have had thoracic burns with ascending involvement of the neck and mandibular region. When cervical hyperextension and elevation of the mandible are impeded, post-burn contracture of the neck might render endotracheal intubation difficult. The development of rigid scar tissue that distorts the laryngeal and mandibular anatomy, or the development of microstomia follo
