BACKGROUND: Truncal valve insufficiency (TVI) is one of the risk factors for death in neonatal primary repair for common arterial trunk (CAT).
METHODS: In this single-center retrospective case-matched controlled study, 16 consecutive CAT patients from 2000 to 2018 with moderate to severe truncal valve regurgitation (TVR2-3), undergoing primary CAT surgery with truncal valve repair, were matched to 16 CAT patients with none or mild truncal valve regurgitation (TVR1-0).

We present a successful surgical repair of a rare variant of the common arterial trunk with unusual arrangement of the pulmonary arteries. The variant was not readily classified using either of the popular classifications for the common arterial trunk. It is appropriately described as a common arterial trunk showing aortic dominance, but with extrapericardial origin of the pulmonary arteries from the underside of the truncal arch. We also provide an account of cardiac development, which we suggest offers an accurate explanation for its morphogenesis.

Spatiotemporal imaging correlation (STIC) technology has been employed to visualize the fetal heart for close to two decades, but the additional value of the technology remains debatable. The value of the technology in identifying the morphology of the cardiac valves is being recognized. We report a 21-week gestational age fetus with common arterial trunk where STIC imaging enabled us to identify a bicuspid arterial valve.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the clinical value of prenatal ultrasound in the diagnosis of the common arterial trunk (CAT) classification and associated malformations.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The 2D ultrasound images, spatiotemporal image correlations (STICs) and clinical data of 88 fetuses diagnosed with CAT malformations by prenatal ultrasound were retrospectively analyzed and classified. PURPOSE: In this article, we report a case of an atypical inferior gluteal artery that passed through the piriformis muscle when it emerged from the pelvic cavity in an elderly Japanese female cadaver. We speculate that this atypical artery could be entrapped and compressed by the piriformis muscle and may therefore be associated with piriformis syndrome; however, the anatomical characteristics of such an atypical artery have not been previously reported. Our objective was to review our experience with isomerism associated with univentricular hearts and evaluate the prevalence of pulmonary versus systemic outflow obstruction.
