OBJECTIVES: Outcome of common arterial trunk (CAT) depends mainly on truncal valve function, presence of coronary artery abnormalities and presence of interrupted aortic arch. The main objective of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of prenatal diagnosis of CAT by analyzing prenatal vs postnatal assessment of: (1) anatomic subtypes and (2) truncal valve function. The secondary objective was to assess the potential impact of prenatal diagnosis of CAT on postnatal mortality and morbidity by comparing prenatally vs postnatally diagnosed patients.
METHODS: This was a retrospective analysis o

Truncus arteriosus is a rare cardiac anomaly, accounting for less than 4% of all congenital lesions. It is the result of failed aorticopulmonary septation during the fifth week of gestation leading to a single arterial trunk overriding the interventricular septum, a single semilunar valve, and typically a large conotruncal ventricular septal defect. Several classifications exist, and it typically requires surgical repair in the neonatal period. We present a 5-day old female neonate who was diagnosed postnatally with type I truncus arteriosus in which the pulmonary arteries arose from a discret

Narrowing of the retroaortic space after repair of common arterial trunk (CAT) with interrupted aortic arch (IAA) is a well-known issue. We present a newborn with CAT, IAA, and functionally univentricular heart (tricuspid atresia) who underwent repair of CAT, IAA, and left ventricle-to-pulmonary artery (LV-to-PA) conduit placement with the Lecompte maneuver. The patient suffered from left bronchus compression postoperatively, which was relieved by tracheobronchial release.

We report a case of a 5-year-old child with tetralogy of Fallot-pulmonary atresia with anomalous origin of left pulmonary artery from ascending aorta and right lung supplied by collateral arteries. This case highlights the role of preoperative CT angiography in differentiating this entity from a common arterial trunk with discontinuous pulmonary arteries.

BACKGROUND: A common arterial trunk is a relatively uncommon type of congenital heart defect. The anomaly is caused by an incomplete conotruncal septation. Arch anomalies, such as interruption, are associated with 10-20% of cases. We present a rare case of common arterial trunk with coarctation of the aorta and patent ductus arteriosus (PDA).
CASE SUMMARY: A term baby who was discovered to have a murmur on examination, for evaluation of the murmur an echocardiography was performed on Day 2 of life, which revealed the diagnosis of a common arterial trunk and coarctation of the aorta. The baby

The mammalian heart is a four-chambered organ with systemic and pulmonary circulations to deliver oxygenated blood to the body, and a tightly regulated genetic network exists to shape normal development of the heart and its associated major arteries. A key process during cardiovascular morphogenesis is the septation of the outflow tract which initially forms as a single vessel before separating into the aorta and pulmonary trunk. The outflow tract connects to the aortic arch arteries which are derived from the pharyngeal arch arteries. Congenital heart defects are a major cause of death and mo

OBJECTIVES: In an attempt to enhance applicability and outcomes of corrections of common arterial trunk, we have recently described a novel method of correction based on the concept of morphodynamism, and preserving the structure of the right ventricle. The intermediate influence of this operation on right ventricular (RV) structure and function have not been described.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Thirty eight Patients (age: 1-12 months) underwent the novel repair. There were 2 early and 4 late deaths. All patients underwent early CT scans, 12 had repeat CT and 8 had MRI after 1 year or more from th

We report an unusual case of a 2-month-old baby with a diagnosis of common arterial trunk and double outlet right ventricle with a remote type ventricular septal defect. Taking into consideration the physiologic moment and anatomic findings of the patient, we planned and successfully performed a bidirectional Glenn procedure as its first palliative procedure.

Heart failure in tetralogy of Fallot in the newborn period is rare and is usually due to either large aortopulmonary collaterals or absent pulmonary valve syndrome with severe pulmonary regurgitation. Pink tetralogy of Fallot and tetralogy of Fallot with disconnected pulmonary arteries from the aorta may present beyond the newborn period with heart failure when Pulmonary vascular resistance (PVR) falls. We describe the diagnostic and therapeutic pathway in a rare case of heart failure in newborn with tetralogy of Fallot.

Tricuspid atresia with common arterial trunk is a very rare association in complex CHD. This association has even more infrequently been documented concomitantly with interrupted aortic arch. We present the diagnosis and initial surgical management of an infant with a fetal diagnosis of tricuspid atresia and common arterial trunk, with additional postnatal finding of interrupted aortic arch with interruption between the left common carotid and left subclavian artery. Due to the infant's small size, she was initially palliated with bilateral pulmonary artery bands and a ductal stent. This was f

INTRODUCTION: Common arterial trunk (CAT) is a congenital heart disease with significant perinatal mortality in which diagnostic agreement remains low.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study on fetuses with suspected CAT. Diagnostic accuracy was tested considering gold-standard postnatal ultrasound or necropsy. Prenatal sonographic markers were evaluated by logistic regression for perinatal survival.
RESULTS: There were 79 fetuses with suspected CAT, and 55 cases had available necropsy/postnatal ultrasound confirming the study population. The diagnostic accuracy was 90.9% for CAT

INTRODUCTION: The association of a univentricular heart defect with common arterial trunk is extremely rare. There is a lack of population-based outcome studies reported in the literature.
METHODS: The hospital records, echocardiographic and other imaging modality data, outpatients' records, operation notes, and other electronic data were reviewed. Patients were reviewed, and the final outcomes of surgery were observed.
RESULTS: Six cases (two males) with common arterial trunk presented over a 30-year period. Five had a complete unbalanced atrioventricular septal defect (83%) and one (17%) h

First bite syndrome (FBS) is an extremely rare complication of carotid endarterectomy (CEA). FBS presents with unique characteristics, development of brief and intense pain in the ipsilateral parotid region at the first bite of each meal, and improvement with subsequent mastication. Here, we report two cases of FBS following CEA. Both cases had anatomical difficulty of a high carotid bifurcation and a high cervical lesion. The lingual and facial arteries (or their common arterial trunk) branched off the external carotid artery (ECA) close to a high carotid bifurcation. The operations required

OBJECTIVE: The limited number of large fetal cohort studies on common arterial trunk (CAT) impedes prenatal counseling at midgestation. This study evaluates the prognosis of CAT from a fetal perspective.
METHOD: Fetuses with a prenatally diagnosed CAT were extracted from the PRECOR registry (2002-2016). We evaluated fetal and postnatal survival and the presence of additional morbidity at last follow-up. Literature databases were searches systematically for additional cases.
RESULTS: Thirty-eight cases with a prenatal diagnosis of CAT were identified in our registry, of which 18/38 (47%) opte

Van Praagh (VP) A3 variant of truncus arteriosus (or common arterial trunk) is defined by only one pulmonary artery (usually the right) originating from the common trunk, while the other lung is supplied either by collaterals or a pulmonary artery arising from the aortic arch. This report describes a staged approach to manage a VP-A3 variant truncus arteriosus with ductal origin of the left pulmonary artery (LPA), a hypoplastic right pulmonary artery, and cyanosis. Initially, the ductal portion of the proximal LPA was stented with a Resolute Onyx drug-eluting stent. The pulmonary arteries grew

A 6-month-old, female, domestic shorthair cat weighing 1.8 kg presented with cardiomegaly seen on radiographs taken at a primary care veterinary center. Echocardiography revealed a single enlarged vessel overriding a ventricular septal defect and severe hypertrophy of the right ventricular free wall. There was no evidence of a pulmonary arterial trunk originating from the heart. The blood flow through the ventricular septal defect exhibited right-to-left shunting. The cat suddenly experienced dyspnea and died at home, and a postmortem examination was performed. A single large vessel was noted
