22q11.2 deletion syndrome leads to both cardiac and non-cardiac developmental defects. We aimed to study the impact of 22q11.2 deletion syndrome on in-hospital outcomes in children undergoing surgical repair for tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) and truncus arteriosus (TA). Using the nationally representative Kids Inpatient Database (KID), we analyzed data from in-hospital pediatric patients for the years 2003, 2006, 2009, and 2012. We compared the in-hospital outcomes between those with and those without 22q11.2 deletion syndrome. There were 6126 cases of TOF and 968 cases of TA. 22q11.2 deletion syn

Embryologically, the common arterial trunk (CAT) is due to the failure of septation by the major outflow cushions. This invariably leads to the presence of an associated large juxta-arterial ventricular septal defect. Overriding of the ventricular septum leads to its biventricular origin in more than 2/3rd of cases. Uncommonly, CAT may be associated with an intact ventricular septum (IVS) and univentricular origin. We describe an infant with CAT, intact IVS, hypoplastic right ventricle, and Ebstein's anomaly of the tricuspid valve who presented to us and palliated successfully. The embryologic

Truncus arteriosus (TA) or common arterial trunk is a congenital cardiac anomaly having high association with arch anomalies such as right aortic arch or aortic arch interruption. However, TA with double aortic arch (DAA) is a rare occurrence. We report a case of TA with DAA where the diagnosis of DAA was missed initially.

We describe a two-year-old African girl with late diagnosis of unusual case of common arterial trunk with two separate pulmonary artery branch origins from the ascending aorta, hypoplastic right pulmonary artery that becomes atretic and reconstitutes at hilum, and three aortopulmonary collaterals providing right lung blood supply. She underwent single-stage intracardiac repair and unifocalization of collaterals.

BACKGROUND: It is critical for surgeons to have a full understanding of the complex courses and ramifications of the human internal iliac artery and its parietal branches. Although numerous anatomical studies have been performed, not all variations at this site are currently understood. Therefore, we characterised these blood vessels in foetal pigs to provide additional insight from a comparative anatomical perspective.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eighteen half-pelvis specimens from foetal pigs were dissected and examined on macroscopic scale.
RESULTS: Among our findings, we identified the intern

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary stenosis in patients with common arterial trunk protects the pulmonary vasculature. In our recently published prospective study of common arterial trunk, some patients with sinusal origin of the pulmonary arterial segment had pulmonary stenosis induced by systolic excursion of a truncal valvar leaflet. We aimed to determine the detailed morphologic characteristics of this unusual finding.
METHODS AND RESULTS: All 70 patients underwent echocardiography and computed tomographic angiography as per predefined study protocol. In selected cases, we also performed cardiac cathe

Conotruncal malformations are a major cause of congenital heart defects in newborn infants. Recently, genetic screens in humans and in mouse models have identified mutations in LRP2, a multi-ligand receptor, as a novel cause of a common arterial trunk, a severe form of outflow tract (OFT) defect. Yet, the underlying mechanism why the morphogen receptor LRP2 is essential for OFT development remained unexplained. Studying LRP2-deficient mouse models, we now show that LRP2 is expressed in the cardiac progenitor niche of the anterior second heart field (SHF) that contributes to the elongation of t

Common arterial trunk is a rare anomaly on its own, but with an intact ventricular septum it is extremely rare. An unexpected finding at autopsy prompted a review of the literature and a review of the developmental considerations associated with the outflow tracts. The case presented was an intrauterine fetal death at 37 weeks gestation. At autopsy, the only anatomic abnormalities were pulmonary dominant common arterial trunk with an intact ventricular septum, ventriculo-arterial septal defect, coarctation and widely patent arterial duct. A review of the literature and the developmental concep

OBJECTIVES: We compared the risk of mortality and reintervention after common arterial trunk (CAT) repair for different surgical techniques, in particular the reconstruction of the right ventricle outflow tract with left atrial appendage (LAA) without a monocusp.
METHODS: The study population comprised 125 patients with repaired CAT who were followed-up at our institution between 2000 and 2018. Statistical analysis included Cox proportional hazard models.
RESULTS: Median follow-up was 10.6 years. The 10-year survival rate was 88.2% (95% confidence interval [CI], 80.6-92.4) with the poorest o

Anomalous connection of the inferior caval vein to the left atrium is exceedingly rare, and has even been considered by some authors an anatomic and embryologic impossibility. This study demonstrates for the first time the existence of this rare malformation, diagnosed on prenatal echo, and confirmed on post-mortem examination in a 24 WG fetus, in association with a common arterial trunk.

A 6-month-old female cat presented with respiratory distress. Physical examination showed a grade 5/6 holosystolic murmur with prominent precordial impulse over the left cranial chest wall. Echocardiography revealed bilateral hypertrophy of the ventricular walls, a dilated ascending aorta overriding the interventricular septum, a membranous ventricular septal defect and no obvious pulmonary trunk or pulmonary artery branches. Turbulent blood flow was detected around the ventricular septal defect and ascending aorta. Follow-up assessment, 12 months later, revealed marked and progressive biatria

BACKGROUND: Common arterial trunk (CAT) is a rare congenital heart disease, and often leads to the early development of pulmonary hypertension and disability. Among the critical structural heart defects, the frequency of CAT is 3%, which reflects the severe hemodynamic disturbances. The natural course of the disease is characterized by a high mortality rate up to 88% during the first year of life. We introduce a patient with common arterial trunk disease.
CASE PRESENTATION: The article describes a case of a 9-year old boy with a diagnosis of type I common arterial trunk (CAT) that rejected re

We report a rare association of common arterial trunk with left pulmonary artery sling and highlight the importance of cross-sectional imaging in complex congenital cardiac lesions. The patient was antenatally diagnosed with common arterial trunk and underwent surgical repair in the neonatal period. At the age of 20 months, the patient presented with respiratory symptoms and increased right ventricular pressure. Multislice computed tomography demonstrated a pulmonary sling with compression of the distal trachea. Surgical correction of the pulmonary sling and change of the right ventricular to

Computed tomography has an established role in the evaluation of a variety of cardiac disorders, including congenital heart diseases. The current generation of high-speed scanners produces volumetric data at low doses of radiation. The interpretation of cardiac anatomy, however, is generally limited to multiplanar assessment of two-dimensional images. The volume rendering technique provides an excellent three-dimensional demonstration of external morphology but offers little information about the intracardiac anatomy. The alternative approach of virtual cardiac dissection, which is a modificat

Truncus arteriosus (TrA) type A3, according to the Van Praagh (VP) classification, cannot be classified under the Collett and Edwards (C-E) system. In this rare anomaly, postnatal closure of the ductus arteriosus can cause unilateral pulmonary artery obstruction; hence, prenatal diagnosis and early confirmatory postnatal diagnosis are important. This case was referred to our hospital for suspected fetal heart disease at 29 weeks' gestation. TrA C-E type 1 was diagnosed by fetal echocardiography, with a right-sided aortic arch, absent inferior vena cava, and azygos continuation. The neonate was

Coexistence of tricuspid atresia and truncus arteriosus (common arterial trunk) is an extremely rare combination of anomalies and requires staged palliation. Initial palliation involves disconnection of the pulmonary arteries from the common trunk and creation of a systemic-to-pulmonary artery shunt. This has generally been accomplished with the use of cardiopulmonary bypass. We describe a technique of off-pump palliation using the common trunk and a modified Blalock-Taussig shunt as sources of pulmonary blood flow at various stages of reconstruction. The child has recovered well and has under

The arrangement of aortic and pulmonary pathways is extremely variable in the hearts with a common arterial trunk. Almost always, interruption of the aortic arch is seen in the setting of hypoplasia of the ascending aorta and dominance of the pulmonary circulation. This subset poses substantial challenges in surgical repair and portends poor outcomes. In this report, we briefly describe the technique of ascending aorta reconstruction and other aspects of the surgical repair of this rare malformation.
