Familial Aplasia Cutis Congenita With Exposure of the Meningeal Membrane: A Case Report.

Aplasia cutis congenita (ACC) is a rare congenital malformation characterized by the localized absence of skin and occasionally subcutaneous and bone tissues. Its etiology is multifactorial, and management ranges from conservative wound care to surgical intervention. We report the case of a male newborn presenting with a 4-5 cm ulcerated lesion at the vertex of the scalp, with complete absence of bone tissue and dural exposure. Physical examination revealed syndromic features (facial asymmetry, hypertelorism, low-set ears, and cutaneous syndactyly) and an atrial septal defect. A strong autosom

Successful Implementation of Peripheral Venoarterial ECMO in a Patient With Eisenmenger Syndrome as a Bridge to Lung Transplant: A Case Report.

Eisenmenger syndrome (ES) is a form of cyanotic congenital heart disease resulting in pulmonary hypertension and right-to-left shunting. End-stage ES often requires lung transplantation and patients may require extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) as a bridge, though the optimal cannulation strategy is not standardized. A 49-year-old woman with ES due to unrepaired ostium secundum atrial septal defect presented with acute on chronic pulmonary embolism and refractory hypoxemia, ultimately requiring VA ECMO cannulation, which was complicated by venous cannula migration across the ASD and i

Imaging the Adult With Secundum Atrial Septal Defect: A Practical Echocardiographic Approach From Diagnosis to Device Closure.

BACKGROUND: Secundum atrial septal defect (ASD) is one of the most common congenital heart defects encountered in adults. Echocardiography plays a central role in diagnosis, assessment of haemodynamic significance, anatomical characterization, transcatheter closure planning, and follow-up. However, the frequently non-circular geometry of secundum ASD can make accurate anatomical assessment challenging, particularly with single-plane measurements. PURPOSE: This narrative review provides a practical echocardiographic approach to adult secundum ASD, emphasizing the complementary roles of transth

Post Atrial Septal Defect Device Closure Acute Severe Haemolysis: one hole closed, one valve leaked-A Rare Case Report.

Acute severe haemolysis following atrial septal defect(ASD) device closure is extremely rare, where precise incidence, underlying aetiologies, and optimal management strategies remain inadequately understood. We report a case of significant haemolysis after transcatheter atrial septal defect closure in 10 year old female, possibly related to the interface between the device surface and the high-velocity jet of valvular regurgitation resulting from the abnormal configuration of the device. The presence of a residual shunt, combined with atrioventricular valve regurgitation flow, places pressure

Pediatric Aortic Arch Reconstruction Using Sustained Total All-Region Perfusion (STAR): Early Experience and Postoperative Outcomes.

BackgroundSustained total all-region (STAR) perfusion is an emerging technique that provides continuous perfusion to the brain, lower body, and heart with mild hypothermia. We hypothesized that using STAR perfusion would result in improved postoperative outcomes.MethodsThe 4 cohorts evaluated (total n = 105) included 1) STAR perfusion for aortic arch reconstruction (Arch w/ STAR), 2) STAR perfusion for aortic arch reconstruction with subsequent cardiac arrest for ventricular septal defect/atrial septal defect (VSD/ASD) (Arch/ASD/VSD w/ STAR), 3) hypothermic circulatory arrest (HCA) with cerebr

Bilateral Anophthalmia Associated With Ventricular Septal Defect, Atrial Septal Defect, and Patent Ductus Arteriosus: A Rare Neonatal Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Anophthalmia is a rare congenital ocular malformation characterized by the complete absence of the eye and its associated ocular structures. Bilateral anophthalmia is particularly uncommon and is frequently associated with multisystem congenital anomalies. Congenital heart disease represents one of the most commonly reported systemic associations; therefore, all infants diagnosed with bilateral anophthalmia should undergo comprehensive systemic evaluation, including detailed cardiovascular assessment. However, the coexistence of bilateral anophthalmia with multiple congenital cardi

Behçet's Disease in Non-Endemic Areas: A Delayed Diagnosis in A Young Male With Recurrent Bipolar Aphthosis.

INTRODUCTION: Behçet's disease (BD) is a rare chronic multisystem inflammatory disorder characterized by vasculitis of vessels of any caliber. It is classically associated with populations along the ancient Silk Road (from the Mediterranean basin to the Far East), but increasing numbers of cases are now reported in non-endemic regions, where delayed diagnosis is common due to low clinical suspicion and the absence of specific diagnostic biomarkers. CASE DESCRIPTION: We report the case of a 28-year-old man from Mexico with an 18-month history of recurrent painful oral ulcers, later associated

Challenges to Open-Heart Surgery in Sub-Saharan Africa: A Narrative Review.

The rising cardiovascular disease burden in Africa necessitates a strengthened healthcare system including enhanced access to cardiac surgery, the definitive treatment for several surgical cardiovascular diseases. Though open-heart surgery, the most invasive type of cardiac surgery, was already possible in Africa over five decades ago, with pioneering surgeons performing atrial septal defect repairs via surface cooling in Ghana as early as 1964, its development across the continent has been hindered by significant challenges. This study highlights the challenges faced by both established and n

Routine application of three-dimensional transesophageal echocardiography-based device selection for transcatheter closure of atrial septal defect without balloon sizing.

AIMS: There is no standardized global framework for device size selection in transcatheter atrial septal defect (ASD) closure. We aimed to evaluate outcomes and insights from the routine application of a device selection strategy based on 3D transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) in consecutive patients undergoing ASD closure. METHODS AND RESULTS: The study population was derived from a prospective ASD_3D_Device_Size registry, in which device sizing was exclusively determined prior to the procedure by a 3D TEE-based formula. All patients were clinically followed for a median of 1.6 years afte
