BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Pregnancy malaria is a major underestimated global public health problem. To understand the involvement of oxidative stress (OS) in the pathophysiology of placental malaria, OS biomarkers, malondialdehyde (MDA), uric acid (UA), and superoxide dismutase (SOD) levels were analyzed and correlated to placental histopathological changes and pregnancy outcomes.
METHODS: A hospital-based study was conducted in Mangaluru, Karnataka, India, to analyze the changes in hematological parameters and the serum OS biomarker levels. Histological analysis of placenta, associated comp

INTRODUCTION: Pregnant women are more susceptible to malaria due to a combination of physiological and immunological changes. The infection may even affect the growth and survival of the foetus, which mainly occur when parasite enters the placenta. The sequestration of infected erythrocytes may trigger the host response, leading to placental inflammation and altered development, affecting the structure and nutrient transport of placenta. These factors collectively impair placental functions and affect foetal growth.
METHODS: Pregnant women with peripheral parasitaemia for P. falciparum and P.

BACKGROUND: Circulating myeloid-derived-suppressor-cells (MDSC) with immunosuppressive function are increased in human experimental Plasmodium falciparum infection, but have not been studied in clinical malaria.
METHODS: Using flow-cytometry, circulating polymorphonuclear-MDSC were evaluated in cryopreserved samples from patients with uncomplicated Plasmodium vivax (n = 8) and uncomplicated (n = 4) and severe (n = 16) falciparum malaria from Papua, Indonesia.
RESULTS: The absolute number of circulating polymorphonuclear-MDSC were significantly elevated in severe falciparum malaria patients c

Cytokines and chemokines are immune response molecules that display diverse functions, such as inflammation and immune regulation. In Plasmodium vivax infections, the uncontrolled production of these molecules is thought to contribute to pathogenesis and has been proposed as a possible predictor for disease complications. The objective of this study was to evaluate the cytokine profile of P. vivax malaria patients with different clinical outcomes to identify possible immune biomarkers for severe P. vivax malaria. The study included patients with non-severe (n = 56), or severe (n = 50) P. vivax

BACKGROUND: Mucormycosis is a potentially lethal, angioinvasive fungal infection caused by the Mucoracea family comprising Mucor, Rhizopus, and Absidia species. It is commonly associated with uncontrolled diabetes mellitus, the use of corticosteroids, immunosuppressive drugs, and Covid-19 infection. The occurrence of mucormycosis in an immunocompetent patient is rare. Also, only a few case reports have been published where patients developed mucormycosis with associated malarial infection.
CASE PRESENTATION: A young female presented with a 3-weeks history of painful swelling and outward protr

The early molecular identification of strains of Plasmodium vivax that have a worse prognosis is important to stratify the risk of complications and choice of conduct made by medical teams. Thus, the aim of the present study was to associate the presence of polymorphisms in the pvmdr-1 and pvcrt-o resistance genes of P. vivax in patients with better or worse prognosis. This cross-sectional epidemiological study was conducted based on data obtained from the records of 120 patients diagnosed with malaria in the Brazilian Amazon. The T958M and F1076L mutations of the pvmdr-1 gene had a frequency

The circumsporozoite surface protein of Plasmodium vivax (PvCSP) plays a critical role in parasite biology. It has been extensively studied as a leading vivax-malaria-vaccine candidate. In this study, the genetic polymorphism and natural selection of pvcsp in P. vivax isolates collected from the Central Highlands, Vietnam were analyzed to understand the genetic structure of the parasite circulating in the endemic area and to provide baseline information for effective vaccine development based on the protein. Only two major alleles, VK210 and VK247, were detected in Vietnamese pvcsp, with VK247

Among all the parasitic diseases in humans, malaria is the most significant and malicious one. The widespread species are Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmodium vivax, but the infection caused by the former is the deadliest. According to the November 2018 report of the World Health Organization (WHO), a total of 219 million cases of malaria were reported globally in 2017, which led to an estimated 435,000 deaths. Mortality due to malaria is estimated at 1.5 - 2.7 million deaths each year. Among all the complications associated with Plasmodium falciparum infection, cerebral malaria (CM) is the mo

Plasmodium vivax is the most common malaria agent in the world, transmitted by vectoring of anopheles mosquitoes. In the clinical course of the disease, non-specific signs of infection (fever, myalgia, joint pain, nausea, vomiting, etc.) can be seen. Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis; also known as hemophagocytic syndrome, is a rapid-onset and life-threatening clinical condition that develops as a result of uncontrolled immune activation and hypercytokinemia. In this case report, a case who developed hemophagocytic syndrome while under treatment for P.vivax infection was presented. A 37-year-

We hypothesized that adults with uncomplicated malaria have lower left ventricular contractile function compared to the general population and that this improves after antimalarial treatment. We examined uncomplicated malaria and the general population from the Western part of the Brazilian Amazon Basin. All persons underwent an echocardiographic examination and peripheral blood smears. Left ventricular function was assessed by speckle tracking analysis of global longitudinal strain (GLS). Logistic regression models were used to assess the association between malaria status (yes/no) and GLS an

Plasmodium vivax causes 81% of all malaria cases and is the most common species in the Peruvian Amazon. We present the case of a male patient with cerebral malaria caused by Plasmodium vivax, who had general malaise and fever, and then presented seizures more than twice a day with loss of consciousness and motor functional limitation. Plasmodium vivax trophozoites were detected by thick blood smear, besides, we also observed low counts of all three blood cell types. Treatment began with artesunate and clindamycin for five days, then one unit of packed red blood cells was transfused; treatment

Plasmodium vivax infections often consist of heterogenous populations of parasites at different developmental stages and with distinct transcriptional profiles, which complicates gene expression analyses. The advent of single cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) enabled disentangling this complexity and has provided robust and stage-specific characterization of Plasmodium gene expression. However, scRNA-seq information is typically derived from the end of each mRNA molecule (usually the 3'-end) and therefore fails to capture the diversity in transcript isoforms documented in bulk RNA-seq data. BACKGROUND: Plasmodium vivax infects an estimated 7 million people every year. Previously, vivax malaria was perceived as a benign condition, particularly when compared to falciparum malaria. Reports of the severe clinical impacts of vivax malaria have been increasing over the last decade.
METHODS AND FINDINGS: We describe the main clinical impacts of vivax malaria, incorporating a rapid systematic review of severe disease with meta-analysis of data from studies with clearly defined denominators, stratified by hospitalization status. Severe anemia is a serious consequence of relapsing infecti

Cerebral malaria (CM) is a severe infection of the brain caused by the parasite Plasmodium falciparum. It is commonly found as a complication of infection traveling to the brain. CM has a poor prognosis unless promptly identified and treated. This case report describes a 15-year-old girl who suddenly started experiencing a tonic-clonic seizure while playing. At the time of arrival at the emergency department, her vital signs were consistent with shock. She had hepatomegaly on physical examination, a hallmark of malarial infection due to an immune response against the proliferation of the proto

Worldwide, transmission of emerging and reemerging malaria infections poses a significant threat to human health in the Sub-Saharan Africa, one that can quickly overwhelm public health resources. While the disease burden of malaria in the Sub-Saharan Africa appears to be on a gradual decline, it is characterized by spatial and temporal variability occasioning a sorry state for the Global South Countries. New evidence on long-term complications of malaria heightens our awareness of its public health impact. Given the likelihood of misdiagnosis, and the unknown levels of malaria transmission acr

BACKGROUND: Knowledge of severe malaria (SM) or complicated malaria is insufficient in all its components. The least known type is the one associated with Plasmodium vivax, compared to that caused by P. falciparum. The aim of this study was to provide a general overview of epidemiological information about the burden of SM, obtained from the National Public Health Surveillance System (SIVIGILA) for the period 2007-2020 in Colombia.
METHODS: A descriptive, retrospective, and cross-sectional study of secondary information was performed via SIVIGILA.
RESULTS: There were 9881 SM cases among 1,06

Congenital Malaria (CM) is an underestimated and under-researched problem in Colombia, despite its severe clinical, epidemiological, economic, and public health consequences. The objective was to determine the general frequency of CM, the specific frequency of CM by diagnostic test and plasmodial species, and identify its associated factors. A retrospective study was carried out using the records of 567 newborns. qPCR and Thick Blood Smear (TBS) were performed. The frequency of infection was determined with a 95% confidence interval. Associated factors were identified by non-parametric tests a
