Plasmodium vivax (P. vivax) malaria was long considered to have low mortality. Severe malaria was classically associated with Plasmodium falciparum (P. falciparum). However, there is growing evidence that severe and complicated forms of vivax malaria may be more widespread than previously assumed. We report a case of a 32-year-old female patient with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) as a complication of P. vivax malaria who has recovered completely following starting intravenous antimalarial medications and noninvasive ventilation (NIV).

Plasmodium vivax transmission occurs throughout the tropics and is an emerging threat in areas of Plasmodium falciparum decline, causing relapse infections that complicate treatment and control. Targeted sequencing for P. falciparum has been widely deployed to detect population structure and the geographic spread of antimalarial and diagnostic resistance. However, there are fewer such tools for P. vivax. Leveraging global variation data, we designed four molecular inversion probe (MIP) genotyping panels targeting geographically differentiating SNPs, neutral SNPs, putative antimalarial resistan

BACKGROUND: Plasmodium vivax relapses due to dormant liver hypnozoites can be prevented with primaquine. However, the dose must be adjusted in individuals with glucose-6-phosphate-dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency. In French Guiana, assessment of G6PD activity is typically delayed until day (D)14 to avoid the risk if misclassification. This study assessed the kinetics of G6PD activity throughout P. vivax infection to inform the timing of treatment.
METHODS: For this retrospective monocentric study, data on G6PD activity between D1 and D28 after treatment initiation with chloroquine or artemisin

In tropical countries, acute febrile illnesses represent a complex clinical problem for general practitioners. We describe the prevalence of different etiologies of acute febrile illnesses occurring among French service members and their families, excluding children, in general practice in French Guiana. From June 2017 to March 2020, patients with a fever ≥37.8°C with a duration of less than 15 days who sought medical care at the army medical centers in Cayenne and Kourou were prospectively enrolled. Based on clinical presentation, blood, urine, nasopharyngeal, and stool samples were collected

BACKGROUND: The current economic and social crisis in Latin America has caused migration to the USA, bringing with it Public Health challenges due to the importation of various infectious diseases. Migrants, particularly those with chronic conditions, such as HIV infection and other sexually transmitted infections (STI), are at greater risk due to pharmacological interruption and access to medical care, so the timely detection of diseases acquired during their migration, such as malaria, is crucial to avoid health complications.
OBJECTIVE: To outline by a multidisciplinary approach (Infectolo

INTRODUCTION: The scarcity of epidemiological data on acute febrile illnesses from South Asia impairs evidence-based clinical decision-making. Our study aimed to explore the etiological spectrum of short-duration fever in patients admitted to a tertiary care hospital in West Bengal, India.
METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study from May 2021 to April 2022 involving 150 adult patients presenting with a fever lasting less than two weeks at Burdwan Medical College and Hospital (West Bengal, India). We performed comprehensive clinical assessments, including microbiological, serological, an

BACKGROUND: Malaria-endemic areas are not spared from the impact of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), leading to co-infection scenarios where overlapping symptoms impose serious diagnostic challenges. Current knowledge on Plasmodium spp. and severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) co-infection in pregnant women remains limited, especially in Latin America, where Plasmodium vivax infection is highly prevalent.
METHODS: This is a case series of five pregnant women with P. vivax and SARS-CoV-2 co-infection hospitalized in two main malaria referral centers of the Capital D

BACKGROUND: Despite notable progress in the control and prevention of malaria in the Horn of Africa, the disease continues to cause significant morbidity and mortality in various regions of Ethiopia, and elsewhere in the region. The transmission of malaria is affected by genetic, sociocultural, and ecological factors. Lare is an Ethiopian district adjacent to the Ethio-South Sudan border, in Gambella region. The region currently has the highest prevalence of malaria in Ethiopia. This study assesses the burden and spatiotemporal patterns of disease transmission, including the effect of climatic

The Brazilian Amazon rainforest region has a significant prevalence of malarial and intestinal parasitic infections in indigenous populations, accounting for a disproportionate burden. Thus, a cross-sectional study was conducted to assess the prevalence and association between malarial and intestinal protozoan and helminth infections in four remote indigenous villages in the Brazilian Amazon Forest. A total of 430 individuals participated in the study, and Plasmodium infections were diagnosed by examination of thick blood smears and PCR. Stool samples 295 individuals (69%) were examined by dir

Primaquine (PQ) is the only antimalarial medication used to eradicate many species of Plasmodium gametocytes and prevent relapse in vivax and ovale malarias. PQ metabolites induce oxidative stress and impair parasitic mitochondria, leading to protozoal growth retardation and death. Collateral damage is also presented in mammalian host cells, particularly erythrocytes, resulting in hemolysis and tissue destruction. However, the underlying mechanisms of these complications, particularly the mitochondria-mediated cell death of the host, are poorly understood. In the present study, toxicopathologi

OBJECTIVES: Malaysia has achieved the status of zero indigenous human malaria cases. Nevertheless, imported human malaria has increasingly been reported in Sarawak, Malaysian Borneo. As zoonotic malaria caused by Plasmodium knowlesi remains a major public health problem in Sarawak, the threat of imported malaria must be addressed as it can cause human malaria reintroduction, sustain transmission, and lead to complications. The objectives of this study were to investigate the epidemiological characteristics of imported malaria cases reported in Sarawak and to underline the challenge posed by im

Malaria continues to be a global public health problem considering the number of cases and death rate worldwide. There were no domestic cases reported from our country in the World Health Organization 2021 malaria report. All the 200-250 annual cases reported from our country have a history of travel to the endemic region. In this report, three malaria cases caused by Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmodium vivax in Kayseri province without a history of travel to the endemic region were presented. The first case was an 18-year-old male patient with no known chronic disease. He admitted to the hos

Prior to the understanding of malaria as a parasitic disease, malaria cachexia was a loosely defined syndrome consisting of severe anemia and splenomegaly in a chronically wasted individual living in a malarious area. Entire rural populations in diverse areas such as the Thames estuary, Marseilles marshes, and the Mississippi valley were said to have cachexia on the basis of chronic malaria "poisoning," which accounted for their poor socioeconomic health. Malaria cachexia appeared to disappear as the marshes were drained, agriculture improved, and quinine or iron treatments were administered.

This prospective, observational, cross-sectional study was undertaken to estimate the burden of anaemia in malaria and to evaluate the contribution of haematogenic factors and haemolysis in its pathogenesis. Haematogenic factors (vitamin B12, folic acid, lactate dehydrogenase, ferritin, total iron binding capacity, direct Coombs test) were estimated in patients with malaria at the time of admission. They were categorized as anaemics or non-anaemics and their complications and outcomes were recorded. P. vivax (97/112) and P. falciparum (13/112) mono-infections dominated; anaemia was seen in 63.

Background Malaria transmission was stopped on most of the vast area of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. However, the pandemic of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has negatively affected the efforts to control malaria. For instance, COVID-19 was reported to induce a relapse of malaria that is caused by Plasmodium vivax. Furthermore, physicians' attention toward COVID-19 can only result in neglect and delayed diagnosis of complicated malaria cases. These factors, among others, might have contributed to an increase of malaria cases in Dammam, Saudi Arabia. Thus, this study was conducted to examine the

Background: It is still unclear how ascorbic acid levels relate to the pathogenesis of malaria. This systematic review synthesized different ascorbic acid levels in malaria patients with different severity levels of malaria and Plasmodium species. Methods: The systematic review protocol was registered in the PROSPERO database (CRD42023394849). A systematic search of PubMed, Embase, MEDLINE, Ovid, Scopus, and Google Scholar was conducted to identify studies that reported ascorbic acid and malaria. The pooled standardized mean difference (Cohen's d) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) was calcul

Plasmodium falciparum and P. vivax are the two most common causes of malaria. While the majority of deaths and severe morbidity are due to P. falciparum, P. vivax poses a greater challenge to eliminating malaria outside of Africa due to its ability to form latent liver stage parasites (hypnozoites), which can cause relapsing episodes within an individual patient. In areas where P. falciparum and P. vivax are co-endemic, individuals can carry parasites of both species simultaneously. These mixed infections complicate dynamics in several ways: treatment of mixed infections will simultaneously af

Malaria has various causative agents that can have a spectrum of disease manifestations, some potentially fatal. Various species have been established as etiologies of malaria, though our understanding of the severity of various species is changing. We present a unique case of Plasmodium vivax malaria that resulted in severe disease, a magnitude rarely seen in previous literature. Our patient was a 35-year-old healthy woman who presented to the emergency department with abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and fever. Further workup revealed severe thrombocytopenia with prolonged prothrombin (PT)

Vitamin E has an antioxidant property and is associated with protection against malaria. The current study used systematic review and meta-analysis approaches examining the variance in blood levels of vitamin E in malaria patients as compared with uninfected individuals. The protocol for the systematic review was registered with PROSPERO (CRD4202341481). Searches for pertinent studies were carried out on Embase, MEDLINE, Ovid, PubMed, Scopus, ProQuest, and Google Scholar.
