BACKGROUND: The diagnosis of malaria infection in humans remains challenging, further complicated by mixed Plasmodium species infections, potentially altering disease severity and morbidity. To facilitate appropriate control measures and treatment, rapid, sensitive, and specific detection assays, including those for the second minor species, would be required. This study aimed to develop a multiplex high-resolution melting (hexaplex PCR-HRM) assay with seven distinct peaks corresponding to five Plasmodium species of the Plasmodium genus, and an internal control to limit false negatives providi

Reduced glutathione (GSH) is a crucial antioxidant with recognized roles in malaria pathogenesis and host response. Despite its importance, reports on the association of GSH with malaria are inconsistent. Therefore, this systematic review and meta-analysis investigated the differences in GSH levels in relation to Plasmodium infection. A comprehensive literature search of six electronic databases (Embase, MEDLINE, Ovid, PubMed, Scopus, and ProQuest) was conducted. Of the 2158 initially identified records, 18 met the eligibility criteria. The majority of studies reported a significant decrease i

Plasmodium vivax is the most frequent and widely distributed cause of recurring malaria. It is a public health issue that mostly occurs in Southeast Asia, followed by the Middle East, Latin, and South Americas and sub-Saharan Africa. Although it is commonly known as an etiologic agent of malaria with mild clinical manifestations, it can lead to severe complications. It has been neglected and understudied for a long time, due to its low mortality, culturing infeasibility, and mild clinical manifestations in comparison to P. falciparum. Despite the mild clinical issues commonly rose for P. vivax

Malaria is the leading human parasitosis and is transmitted through the bite of anopheline mosquitoes infected with parasites of the genus Plasmodium spp. Among the seven species that cause malaria in humans, Plasmodium vivax is the most prevalent species in Latin America. In recent years, there have been an increasing number of reports of clinical complications caused by P. vivax infections, which were previously neglected and underestimated. P. vivax biology remains with large gaps. The emergence of next-generation sequencing technology has ensured a breakthrough in species knowledge. Couple

BACKGROUND: Malaria is endemic and represents an important public health issue in Brazil. Knowledge of risk factors for disease progression represents an important step in preventing and controlling malaria-related complications. Reports of severe forms of Plasmodium vivax malaria are now becoming a common place, but respiratory complications are described in less than 3% of global literature on severe vivax malaria.
CASE PRESENTATION: A severe respiratory case of imported vivax malaria in a previously healthy 40-year-old woman has been reported. The patient died after the fifth day of treatm

BACKGROUND: Imperfect adherence is a major barrier to effective primaquine radical cure of Plasmodium vivax. This study investigated the effect of reduced adherence on the risk of P. vivax recurrence.
METHODS: Efficacy studies of patients with uncomplicated P. vivax malaria, including a treatment arm with daily primaquine, published between January 1999 and March 2020 were identified. Individual patient data from eligible studies were pooled using standardized methodology. Adherence to primaquine was inferred from i) the percentage of supervised doses and ii) the total mg/kg dose received com

Malaria is a parasitic disease transmitted by infected female Anopheles mosquitoes. There are five species of Plasmodium species that can infect humans. Of these species, especially P.falciparum and P.vivax pose the greatest threat to human health. In the 2014 report of the World Health Organization, it was reported that there were no locally acquired cases of malaria in 16 countries including Türkiye. Malaria cases originating from outside the country and imported due to migration, travel and working abroad are reported as import cases. In this report, a case of non-imported malaria followed

KEY CLINICAL MESSAGE: Low threshold is required to suspect complications of Plasmodium vivax malaria. Pulmonary thromboembolism, though rare, should be considered as its complication in the presence of unexplained and sudden onset shortness of breath.
ABSTRACT: The hypercoagulable complications of malaria typically manifest in the microvasculature. However, there are several cases of intracranial venous thrombosis caused by Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmodium vivax malaria, and there was one case report of pulmonary thromboembolism (PTE) due to P. falciparum. BACKGROUND: Malaria during pregnancy is associated with a greater risk of complications for the mother and fetus. The aim of the study is to analyze the features of imported cases of malaria in pregnant women in Europe and evaluate which factors are associated with a non-favourable outcome.
METHODS: A computerized search of the literature was performed combining the terms plasmod*, malaria, pregnan*, maternal, gravid, parturient, expectant, and congenital, from January 1997 to July 2023.
RESULTS: 28 articles reporting 57 cases of malaria in pregnant women immigrant in non-endemic areas were

Splenomegaly frequently occurs in patients with Plasmodium falciparum (Pf) or P. vivax (Pv) malarial anemia, but mechanisms underlying this co-occurrence are unclear. In malaria-endemic Papua, Indonesia, we prospectively analyzed red blood cell (RBC) concentrations in the spleen and spleen-mimetic retention in 37 subjects splenectomized for trauma or hyperreactive splenomegaly, most of whom were infected with Plasmodium. Splenomegaly (median 357 g [range: 80-1918 g]) was correlated positively with the proportion of red-pulp on histological sections (median 88.1% [range: 74%-99.4%]; r = .59, p

Background Malaria in pregnancy (MIP) is a major public health problem due to the vulnerability of pregnant women to infections, resulting in adverse maternal/foetal outcomes in endemic areas. Methods We did a field-based study to assess the burden of MIP (prevalence at the time of enrolment and follow-up) and to identify risk factors for MIP in the Birsa and Baihar blocks of district Balaghat in Madhya Pradesh, which have perennial malaria transmission. Malaria screening (during 2015-2017) was done by microscopy and bivalent rapid diagnostic test (SD Bioline RDT, malaria antigen Plasmodium fa

As Odisha is an endemic region for malaria with many acute kidney injury (AKI) cases, this study evaluated the clinical profile and treatment outcomes of patients with malaria complicated by AKI. This prospective observational study was conducted between December 2015 and September 2017. Detailed histories and clinical examinations were recorded. On admission, tests for routine hematology, plasma glucose, liver function, renal function, serum electrolytes, thick smears, thin smears, and malarial parasites were performed. Of the 958 AKI malarial patients admitted, 202 (82.6 % males) were includ

Malaria is a serious, contagious infection caused by single-celled parasites. About 200 species of Plasmodium have been described that can cause infection in vertebrates. Five different species of Plasmodium are known to cause infection in humans to date. Infection with more than one type of pathogen is called coinfection. This type of infections can be caused by different species of the same genus, as well as by different species. Malaria coinfections are mostly caused by the combination of Plasmodium vivax and Plasmodium falciparum. In this study, a case of malaria admitted to the hospital a

Plasmodium is a genus of parasites that comprises different species. The species falciparum, vivax, malariae, ovale, and knowlesi are known to cause a vector-borne illness called malaria, and among these, falciparum is known to cause major complications. The vector, the Anopheles mosquito, is commonly found in warmer regions close to the equator, and hence transmission and numbers of cases tend to be higher in Sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, and Central America. The number of cases of malaria in the United States has remained stable over the years with low transmission rates, and the disease i

BACKGROUND: Malaria is considered one of the life-threatening mosquito-borne infectious diseases responsible for approximately more than 4,00,000 deaths every year all over the world. Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmodium vivax are widespread species, but infections caused by the former are of great concern.
OBJECTIVE: Among the various forms of infections associated with Plasmodium falciparum, cerebral malaria (CM) is the most severe neurological complication, accounting for almost 13% of all malariarelated mortality. The development of effective therapeutics is urgently needed to overcome th

BACKGROUND: The northwestern border of Thailand is an area of low seasonal malaria transmission. Until recent successful malaria elimination activities, malaria was a major cause of disease and death. Historically the incidences of symptomatic Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmodium vivax malaria were approximately similar.
METHODS: All malaria cases managed in the Shoklo Malaria Research Unit along the Thailand-Myanmar border between 2000 and 2016 were reviewed.
RESULTS: There were 80 841 consultations for symptomatic P. vivax and 94 467 for symptomatic P. falciparum malaria. Overall, 4844 (5.

A 41-year-old woman from the Democratic Republic of the Congo underwent laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) as a surgical treatment for obesity. Despite an unremarkable preoperative evaluation, the patient developed a fever and elevated C-reactive protein (CRP) levels postoperatively. Physical examination findings, laboratory tests, and imaging studies ruled out surgical complications, leading to the consideration of infectious causes. A thorough patient history revealed a residence in a malaria-endemic region with a history of recurrent malaria episodes. In addition to her complaints, the p

Malaria is frequently associated with splenomegaly. However, spontaneous splenic rupture is a rare and life-threatening complication. It is mostly seen in acute infection in non-immune adults and Plasmodium vivax and Plasmodium falciparum have been associated with the majority of cases. We describe a case of splenic rupture in an adult with complicated malaria by Plasmodium falciparum in which a conservative approach was used.
