Congenital left-sided obstructive heart lesions (LSOLs) are a group of rare but serious congenital heart diseases. They encompass a spectrum of structural abnormalities that can obstruct blood flow at any point from the left atrium to the aortic arch. They are broadly divided into two main categories. The first is left ventricular inflow obstruction, including cor triatriatum sinister and congenital mitral stenosis. The second is left ventricular outflow obstruction, including subvalvular aortic stenosis, bicuspid aortic valve, supravalvular aortic stenosis, coarctation of the aorta, aortic ar

BACKGROUND: Parachute mitral valve (PMV) is a rare congenital anomaly where all chordae tendineae insert into a single papillary muscle, causing stenosis or regurgitation. Adult presentations are uncommon and often underdiagnosed.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 35-year-old male presented with exertional dyspnea. Echocardiography demonstrated severe mitral stenosis, reduced ejection fraction, a bicuspid aortic valve, and pulmonary hypertension. Intraoperative findings confirmed true PMV. Due to anatomical complexity, a 27-mm mechanical prosthesis replacement was performed successfully, with rapid postope

BackgroundCongenital mitral rings represent a rare subset of congenital mitral stenosis often associated with complex cardiac anomalies. Comprehensive literature on congenital mitral rings, particularly from large single-institution experiences, remains sparse. Methods: This retrospective study, conducted at All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, analyzed data from 52 patients who underwent surgical correction for congenital mitral rings between 2014 and 2024. Data on demographics, clinical presentation, preoperative echocardiographic and cardiac catheterization parameters, associ

The mitral valve apparatus comprises the annulus, valve leaflets, chordae tendineae, and papillary muscles, forming an integrated biomechanical unit essential for unidirectional blood flow. The leaflets and chordae are primarily derived from endocardial cells, and damage to these structures results in either mitral stenosis or mitral regurgitation, depending on the underlying pathology. This review compares three major mitral valve diseases, rheumatic mitral stenosis, congenital mitral stenosis, and myxomatous mitral valve prolapse, to highlight their distinct etiologies, molecular mechanisms,

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of eating disorders (EDs) in the Sivas province, and to identify the sociodemographic characteristics and co-morbid axis-I and axis-II diagnoses in EDs.
METHOD: 1122 people between 18-44 years of age were enrolled in the study after completing the eating attitude test (EAT), and people who had points around the cut-off score had clinical interviews. The control group included subjects that were age- and sex-matched with the ED group, were not diagnosed with an ED, and had an EAT score <30. In order to determine the following

BACKGROUND: Severe congenital mitral valve disease is difficult to manage in infants and small children. Off-label use of a Melody valve in the mitral position (MiM) has emerged as an important bridge to definitive valve replacement, with the potential to reintervene.
CASE SUMMARY: A 6-year-old boy with Shone's complex and multiple left-sided interventions, including surgical MiM implantation at age 3 months (Melody #1) and transapical MiM valve-in-valve at age 2 years (Melody #2), presented 4 years later with progressive mixed MiM dysfunction. In a hybrid catheterization laboratory, balloon

BackgroundPediatric mechanical mitral valve replacement (mMVR) is a high-risk procedure associated with long-term complications and lifelong anticoagulation. This study aimed to evaluate long-term outcomes of mMVR in patients under 18 years of age and to identify risk factors for survival and reoperation.MethodsWe retrospectively analyzed 118 patients under 18 years of age who underwent mMVR at a single center from 1965 to 2024. Demographics, operative data, and outcomes were reviewed. Survival was assessed using Kaplan-Meier analysis, and competing risk models evaluated reoperation. Cox regre

BACKGROUND: This study investigated the long-term results of mitral valve replacement (MVR) using mechanical prostheses in children under 3 years of age.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 24 patients who underwent MVR with mechanical prostheses before the age of 3 years between 1996 and 2019. Underlying diagnoses included isolated congenital mitral regurgitation (n=4), congenital mitral stenosis (n=4), and various congenital heart defects (n=16). The median follow-up duration was 9.8 years (interquartile range [IQR], 7.3-13.2 years).
RESULTS: The median age and weight at MVR were 16.6 mon

Congenital mitral valve stenosis (MVS) in children is usually isolated. However, it is, in rare cases, associated with secondary pulmonary hemosiderosis. It is hypothesized that secondary pulmonary hemosiderosis results from chronic pulmonary venous congestion and repeated microvascular hemorrhage due to elevated left atrial pressure. We describe the case of a six-year-old child with congenital severe MVS who developed coexisting pulmonary hypertension and hemosiderosis. The child was successfully managed with surgical repair of MVS through papillary muscle splitting and commissurotomy. This c

Congenital mitral stenosis is a rare anomaly. We report successful surgical management of congenital mitral stenosis in a patient with Kabuki syndrome. A 15-month-old male with Kabuki syndrome was referred and echocardiography showed isolated congenital mitral stenosis. The valve was not repairable as it was showing severe stenotic features in multilevel fashion. Valve was replaced with mechanical valve. Postoperative course was uneventful without any rhythm problem and he has been doing well clinically during the 25 months follow-up with regular international normalized ratio checks.

Congenital mitral stenosis is a broad-spectrum pathology in which blood flow to the left ventricle is obstructed both functionally and anatomically. Hammock mitral valve, also known as anomalous mitral arcade, is a rare congenital anomaly particularly in infants and children. Hammock mitral valve may not be suitable for repair regarding the advanced dysplastic mitral valve structure. Aortopulmonary window is an unusual cardiac anomaly which is defined as a communication between the main pulmonary artery and the ascending aorta. As a result of the excessive left-to-right shunt, early interventi

Parachute mitral valve (PMV) is a common form of congenital mitral stenosis and is difficult to diagnose prenatally. This report describes a fetal case of PMV with coarctation of the aorta that was diagnosed at 25 weeks' gestation by echocardiography and confirmed at autopsy. We describe the ultrasonographic features in this case and present a useful sign for making a prenatal diagnosis of PMV.

A 4-year-old child with supramitral membrane (SMM) causing severe mitral stenosis (MS) was taken for excision of the membrane. Intraoperative transesophageal echocardiography showed a large thrombus in the left atrial appendage (LAA) in addition to SMM. The case underscores the importance of this extremely rare association and prompt therapy to prevent catastrophic consequences.

BACKGROUND: Mitral valve (MV) repair in children is challenging because of the broad spectrum of lesions and anticipated patient growth. The purpose of the study was to evaluate the outcome of MV repair in children below 10 years of age.
METHODS: We reviewed all MV repair procedures performed in children below 10 years of age. Endpoints of the study were survival after MV repair and cumulative incidence of reoperation.
RESULTS: MV repair was performed in 40 patients with congenital MV disease (MVD) and in 10 patients with acquired MVD. Median age at time of repair for congenital MVD was 1.2

BACKGROUND: The adult worms of Angiostrongylus vasorum reside in the pulmonary artery of dogs and can lead to cardiac, respiratory, and central neurologic signs. Due to luminal obstruction and perivascular inflammation of the pulmonary artery branches, pulmonary hypertension can arise. Pulmonary hypertension, in turn, can lead to severe damage of the right-sided cardiac structures, leading to right ventricular remodeling and tricuspid valve regurgitation.
CASE PRESENTATION: An 8-year-old neutered female English Cocker Spaniel was presented to the author's institution because of abdominal dist

UNLABELLED: Reported cases of uni-leaflet mitral valve (MV) were related to the absence or dysplasia of the posterior mitral leaflet with ample anterior mitral leaflet. We present here a new entity of uni-leaflet MV where the MV appears as a membrane-like structure with a single slit-like orifice at its lateral part with no commissures.
CASE REPORT: Continuous Doppler flow revealed a mean pressure gradient of 19 mmHg across the mitral valve indicating severe mitral stenosis. In 3D images from the left atrial view, the MV appeared like a membrane with a single orifice in its lateral part towar

Supravalvar mitral ring is a rare congenital abnormality characterized by a ridge of connective tissue located above the mitral valve. It is a cause of congenital mitral stenosis typically presenting in childhood and usually associated with other cardiac abnormalities. We report the rare case of a 24-year-old male presenting with an isolated aneurysmal supravalvar mitral ring. He presented at the emergency room with a 2-week history of worsening heart failure symptoms and antecedent effort intolerance of 4 years duration. He was referred from a primary care facility with an echo diagnosis of c
