Atypical Kartagener syndrome in a 40-year-old woman: Computed Tomography findings of situs inversus with bronchiectasis and infertility.

Primary ciliary dyskinesia is a rare inherited disorder characterized by impaired mucociliary clearance leading to recurrent respiratory infections. Kartagener syndrome represents a subset of this condition classically defined by the triad of bronchiectasis, chronic sinusitis, and situs inversus, although atypical presentations lacking one component of the triad may occur. We report the case of a 40-year-old female who presented with productive cough, shortness of breath, chest pain, and fever, with a long-standing history of recurrent respiratory infections since adolescence that showed only

Recurrent Intestinal Obstruction Secondary to Crohn's Disease in Dextrocardia With Situs Inversus Totalis: A Case Report.

Situs inversus totalis (SIT) is a rare congenital anomaly characterized by complete mirror-image transposition of the thoracic and abdominal organs. Although most individuals with SIT remain asymptomatic, acute abdominal pathology can pose significant diagnostic and surgical challenges due to reversed anatomical landmarks. Intestinal obstruction is an uncommon but serious complication in this population. We report the case of a 46-year-old male with no prior knowledge of SIT who presented with a six-month history of intermittent abdominal pain, vomiting, and watery diarrhea, with recent worsen

An Unusual Case of Situs Inversus in a Premature Neonate.

Situs inversus, also known as a mirror image, is the transposition of all major organs in the body from left to right. Situs inversus totalis is a rare condition characterized by the complete inversion and mirroring of organs, including the cardia, lungs, and all abdominal contents. It follows an autosomal recessive pattern of inheritance, with an incidence of approximately one in 8,000 live births. Early prognosis is important due to the risk of complications associated with this syndrome. In this case report, we will examine a premature infant with isolated situs inversus, which was discover

Comprehensive Nursing Management of Anticoagulation and Heart Failure Surveillance in a Chinese Patient With Mirror-Image Dextrocardia Post-MitraClip Surgery: A First Case Report.

Mitral regurgitation (MR) is the valent type of valvular heart disease, caused by primary leaflet lesions or annular dilatation secondary to left ventricular dysfunction. It can lead to a series of complications such as volume overload, exacerbated pulmonary congestion, and heart failure, significantly impacting patient prognosis. Surgical mitral valve repair or replacement is currently the gold standard for MR treatment but is associated with substantial trauma, numerous complications, and poor tolerance in elderly high-risk patients. As an emerging minimally invasive technique, transcatheter

Pulsed field ablation for paroxysmal atrial fibrillation and atrial flutter in a patient with dextrocardia and prior secundum atrial septal defect repair: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Pulsed field ablation (PFA) is a novel non-thermal ablation modality that has demonstrated efficacy and safety in the treatment of common arrhythmias such as atrial fibrillation (AF) and atrial flutter (AFL). However, evidence regarding its use in patients with dextrocardia remains scarce. CASE SUMMARY: A 63-year-old woman with dextrocardia and situs in vs. totalis, and with prior surgical atrial septal defect (ASD) repair, presented with heart palpitations that did not respond to antiarrhythmic drugs. Ambulatory and Holter monitoring documented short episodes of AF and AFL. Compu

Horizontal gaze palsy with progressive scoliosis in siblings with opposing spinal curves and heart positions: is there a relationships and/or connection to etiology?

PURPOSE: Horizontal gaze palsy with progressive scoliosis (HGPPS) is a rare neurodevelopmental disorder marked by the absence of horizontal eye movement and gradual progressive scoliosis during childhood. Here, we report two biological siblings that presented with a shared diagnosis; however, the curves are in opposite directions and one presents with dextrocardia. METHODS: Two siblings presented with acute scoliosis and conjugate absence of horizontal gaze. The diagnosis was confirmed based on characteristic clinical presentation, congenital absence of horizontal gaze, and supportive radiogr

Further Support for Association of DAND5 with Autosomal Recessive Laterality Disorders.

BACKGROUND: Laterality defects are rare congenital malformations that encompass congenital heart defects (CHDs) together with abnormalities of visceral organ arrangement (situs inversus or situs ambiguous). These defects may be isolated or part of a syndromic presentation with multisystem involvement. While over 50 genes have been implicated in laterality disorders, across multiple modes of inheritance, many cases remain molecularly undiagnosed. We sought to elucidate the molecular basis of dextrocardia, CHDs and visceral heterotaxy in two unrelated individuals of Arab-Muslim descent. METHODS

Using Open-Window Mapping Strategy for Wolff-Parkinson-White Syndrome in a Patient With Dextrocardia With Situs Inversus.

The coexistence of dextrocardia and Wolff-Parkinson-White (WPW) syndrome is exceedingly rare and presents unique challenges for electrophysiological mapping and ablation. We report the first successful radiofrequency catheter ablation guided by three-dimensional open-window mapping (OWM) in such a patient. Pre-procedural right-sided electrocardiography analyzed with the EASY-WPW algorithm predicted a right inferoparaseptal accessory pathway, consistent with OWM localization. Despite reversed cardiac anatomy, precise mapping enabled effective ablation without complications. This case illustrate

Artesunate promotes liver regeneration by modulating mitophagy via the AMPKα1/2/mTOR signaling pathway.

BACKGROUND: Occupational, inflammatory skin diseases are a common work-related disease. Often, these diseases are irritative and/or allergic hand eczema. Affected groups include, for example, nursing staff and metal workers. Individual outpatient and inpatient prevention programs aim at improving self-management of the disease (i.e., improving skin protection behavior) and preventing affected workers from job loss due to their illness. The common-sense model is a widely used framework to explain the patients' illness perceptions of their disease. Qualitative research methods are appropriate me

Unraveling the Complexities of Kartagener's Syndrome: A Case of Bronchiectasis, Isolated Dextrocardia, and Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia in an Adult With Chronic Respiratory Symptoms.

Kartagener's Syndrome (KS), a rare autosomal recessive disorder and a subset of Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia (PCD), is characterized by chronic sinusitis, bronchiectasis, and, in approximately 50% of cases, situs inversus. This condition arises from genetic mutations that impair motile cilia function, leading to defective mucociliary clearance, recurrent respiratory infections, and progressive lung damage. While KS is typically diagnosed in childhood, its recognition in adults is often delayed due to symptom overlap with common respiratory conditions such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary

Left-sided 3D totally endoscopic mitral valve repair guided by left atrial appendage orientation in situs inversus totalis with mirror-image dextrocardia: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Situs inversus totalis with mirror-image dextrocardia is a rare anatomical condition that creates specific challenges for minimally invasive mitral valve surgery. In totally endoscopic procedures, the reversed cardiac orientation may affect thoracic access, peripheral cannulation, left atrial exposure and accurate identification of mitral valve segments. We report a case of left-sided three-dimensional totally endoscopic mitral valve repair in this setting, with emphasis on operative planning and intraoperative segment orientation. CASE PRESENTATION: A 39-year-old woman presented

[Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation in a Patient With Dextrocardia and Situs Inversus Totalis].

The patient is a man in his 60s with situs inversus totalis. He underwent percutaneous coronary intervention for an old myocardial infarction in his 40s and coronary artery bypass grafting( CABG) in his 60s. Through preoperative examination of CABG, moderate aortic stenosis( AS) was disclosed, and he was under outpatient follow-up. He was referred to our department because AS became severe. Since operative mortality and morbidity were high, we chose transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) as the treatment option. Fluoroscopic images were mirrored, and the delivery system was rotated 180

Prenatal ultrasound findings of the IVC takeoff appearance: Teaching cases highlighting IVC interruption and double vessel sign.

Familiarity with the relationship between the aorta and inferior vena cava (IVC) in the fetal upper abdomen and thorax are important for evaluating fetal systemic venous anatomy during prenatal ultrasound. In a routine 18-week fetal scan, the IVC Takeoff Appearance was visualized, supporting normal anatomical alignment of the IVC and aorta. In contrast, a 28-week late anomaly scan demonstrated absence of the IVC Takeoff Appearance in a fetus with dextrocardia, raising suspicion for interrupted IVC with azygos continuation and associated double vessel sign. The IVC Takeoff Appearance can be vis
