Two male infants, whose mothers are sisters and whose fathers are unrelated, were born within two weeks of each other. Both infants had coarctation of the aorta. Since both mothers were exposed to an insecticide while on a camping trip in the first trimester of pregnancy, it is unknown whether genetic or environmental factors caused the anomalies. Observations should be made on other patients with congenital heart defects to clarify the etiologic factors.

One of the genetically distinct collagens (type III) normally found in skin, aorta, and intestine is missing from the tissues of patients with the Ehlers-Danlos syndrome type IV. While skin fibroblasts from other individuals synthesize both types I and III collagen. Ehlers-Danlos syndrome IV cells synthesize only type I. These results suggest that the fragile skin, blood vessels, and intestines of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome IV patients result from an absence of type III collagen.

Twenty-three patients aged 5 to 53 years with recurrent or complex coarctations of the aorta were successfully operated upon using bypass grafts. In this report, we shall analyze the results obtained with palliative treatment in 30 patients with congenital heart disease who were operated upon at the University Hospital of Caracas during the period 1968 to 1972. Our initial method of closed atrial septectomy, used in the palliative therapy of transposition of the great arteries (TGA), failed to produce a technical success in 1 of 5 patients. Subsequently, we modified the technique by securing the septum on traction sutures and simplifying the introduction of the septectome. In this study of low birth weight infants (less than 2500 g), we compared the birth weight distribution of patients with patent ductus arteriosus associated with prematurity with that of patients having congenital heart disease other than patent ductus arteriosus. Between October 1961 and December 1973, 38 patients with an anomaly in origin (15 patients) or distribution (23 patients) of the main coronary artery or one of its branches underwent operation at the Texas Heart Institute.
