Plasmodium malariae after successful treatment of P. falciparum malaria with artemether-lumefantrine.

We described a case of Plasmodium malariae malaria in a traveler returning from the Democratic Republic of Congo to Belgium. This occurred despite successful artemether-lumefantrine treatment for Plasmodium falciparum three weeks earlier and in the absence of re-exposure in an endemic area. We discuss possible explanations for this unusual observation.

Impact of Malaria Diagnostic Technologies on the Disease Burden in the Sub-Saharan Africa.

Worldwide, transmission of emerging and reemerging malaria infections poses a significant threat to human health in the Sub-Saharan Africa, one that can quickly overwhelm public health resources. While the disease burden of malaria in the Sub-Saharan Africa appears to be on a gradual decline, it is characterized by spatial and temporal variability occasioning a sorry state for the Global South Countries. New evidence on long-term complications of malaria heightens our awareness of its public health impact. Given the likelihood of misdiagnosis, and the unknown levels of malaria transmission acr

A Retrospective Review on Severe Malaria in Colombia, 2007-2020.

BACKGROUND: Knowledge of severe malaria (SM) or complicated malaria is insufficient in all its components. The least known type is the one associated with Plasmodium vivax, compared to that caused by P. falciparum. The aim of this study was to provide a general overview of epidemiological information about the burden of SM, obtained from the National Public Health Surveillance System (SIVIGILA) for the period 2007-2020 in Colombia. METHODS: A descriptive, retrospective, and cross-sectional study of secondary information was performed via SIVIGILA. RESULTS: There were 9881 SM cases among 1,06

Challenges in the diagnosis and treatment of malaria in Polish workers returning from Africa: a case series and review of literature.

Malaria is a parasitic disease caused in humans by five species of Plasmodium: P. falciparum, P. vivax, P. malariae, P. ovale, and P. knowlesi and transmitted through a female mosquito bite. In 2020, there were 241 million cases of malaria worldwide including 627,000 deaths. Traveling to malaria endemic areas is a significant risk factor, therefore, it is very important to use non-specific and pharmacological prophylaxis. Malaria symptoms usually appear 10-14 days after infection and the disease may be suspected, based on patient examination and medical history, in patients with fever who have

Co-infection of the four major Plasmodium species: Effects on densities and gametocyte carriage.

BACKGROUND: Co-infection of the four major species of human malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum (Pf), P. vivax (Pv), P. malariae (Pm), and P. ovale sp. (Po) is regularly observed, but there is limited understanding of between-species interactions. In particular, little is known about the effects of multiple Plasmodium species co-infections on gametocyte production. METHODS: We developed molecular assays for detecting asexual and gametocyte stages of Pf, Pv, Pm, and Po. This is the first description of molecular diagnostics for Pm and Po gametocytes. These assays were implemented in a uniqu

The first complete genome of the simian malaria parasite Plasmodium brasilianum.

Naturally occurring human infections by zoonotic Plasmodium species have been documented for P. knowlesi, P. cynomolgi, P. simium, P. simiovale, P. inui, P. inui-like, P. coatneyi, and P. brasilianum. Accurate detection of each species is complicated by their morphological similarities with other Plasmodium species. PCR-based assays offer a solution but require prior knowledge of adequate genomic targets that can distinguish the species. While whole genomes have been published for P. knowlesi, P. cynomolgi, P. simium, and P. inui, no complete genome for P. brasilianum has been available. Previ

Diagnosis, Treatment, and Prevention of Malaria in the US: A Review.

IMPORTANCE: Malaria is caused by protozoa parasites of the genus Plasmodium and is diagnosed in approximately 2000 people in the US each year who have returned from visiting regions with endemic malaria. The mortality rate from malaria is approximately 0.3% in the US and 0.26% worldwide. OBSERVATIONS: In the US, most malaria is diagnosed in people who traveled to an endemic region. More than 80% of people diagnosed with malaria in the US acquired the infection in Africa. Of the approximately 2000 people diagnosed with malaria in the US in 2017, an estimated 82.4% were adults and about 78.6% w

Malaria Surveillance - United States, 2017.

PROBLEM/CONDITION: Malaria in humans is caused by intraerythrocytic protozoa of the genus Plasmodium. These parasites are transmitted by the bite of an infective female Anopheles species mosquito. The majority of malaria infections in the United States occur among persons who have traveled to regions with ongoing malaria transmission. However, malaria is occasionally acquired by persons who have not traveled out of the country through exposure to infected blood products, congenital transmission, nosocomial exposure, or local mosquitoborne transmission. A systematic review and meta-analysis of asymptomatic malaria infection in pregnant women in Sub-Saharan Africa: A challenge for malaria elimination efforts.

BACKGROUND: In Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), where malaria transmission is stable, malaria infection in pregnancy adversely affects pregnant women, fetuses, and newborns and is often asymptomatic. So far, a plethora of primary studies have been carried out on asymptomatic malaria infection in pregnant women in SSA. Nevertheless, no meta-analysis estimated the burden of asymptomatic malaria infection in pregnant women in SSA, so this meta-analysis was carried out to bridge this gap. METHODS: PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, Embase, and ProQuest were systematically searched for relevant studies publ

High prevalence of Plasmodium malariae and Plasmodium ovale in co-infections with Plasmodium falciparum in asymptomatic malaria parasite carriers in southwestern Nigeria.

Asymptomatic malaria parasite carriers do not seek anti-malarial treatment and may constitute a silent infectious reservoir. In order to assess the level of asymptomatic and symptomatic carriage amongst adolescents in a highly endemic area, and to identify the risk factors associated with such carriage, we conducted a cross-sectional survey of 1032 adolescents (ages 10-19 years) from eight schools located in Ibadan, southwestern Nigeria in 2016. Blood films and blood spot filter paper samples were prepared for microscopy and DNA analysis. The prevalence of asymptomatic malaria was determined u

Clinical management of Plasmodium knowlesi malaria.

The zoonotic parasite Plasmodium knowlesi has emerged as an important cause of human malaria in parts of Southeast Asia. The parasite is indistinguishable by microscopy from the more benign P. malariae, but can result in high parasitaemias with multiorgan failure, and deaths have been reported. Recognition of severe knowlesi malaria, and prompt initiation of effective therapy is therefore essential to prevent adverse outcomes. Here we review all studies reporting treatment of uncomplicated and severe knowlesi malaria. We report that although chloroquine is effective for the treatment of uncomp

Assessment of the burden of malaria and bacteraemia by retrospective molecular diagnosis in febrile illnesses and first-line anti-infectives in Côte d'Ivoire.

BACKGROUND: The aetiologies of fever are poorly understood in sub-Saharan Africa. We aimed to assess the burden of malaria and bacteria in Côte d'Ivoire. METHODS: Blood samples from 438 febrile and 346 afebrile people were screened using molecular tools. RESULTS: Plasmodium falciparum was the most common microorganism associated with fever (46.8% in febrile, 23.4% in afebrile people; p < 0.001). Bacteraemia was detected in 21.7% of febrile people and 12.7% of afebrile people (p = 0.001). Streptococcus pneumoniae was the main cause of bacteraemia (7.1% of febrile and 0.6% of afebrile individu

Use of a highly-sensitive rapid diagnostic test to screen for malaria in pregnancy in Indonesia.

BACKGROUND: The sensitivity of rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) for malaria is inadequate for detecting low-density, often asymptomatic infections, such as those that can occur when screening pregnant women for malaria. The performance of the Alere™ Ultra-sensitive Malaria Ag Plasmodium falciparum RDT (uRDT) was assessed retrospectively in pregnant women in Indonesia. METHODS: The diagnostic performance of the uRDT and the CareStart™ Malaria HRP2/pLDH VOM (Plasmodium vivax, Plasmodium ovale and Plasmodium malariae) Combo RDT (csRDT) were assessed using 270 stored red blood cell pellets and plasm

Travel Health Implications for Women Traveling Abroad.

International travel is increasing each year, and many travelers are female. Travel-related health risks include diseases, accidents, and other safety concerns. Whether traveling for business or pleasure, women should practice appropriate measures that minimize the impact travel can have on their health and well-being. Female travelers can have unique health risks related to pregnancy, lactation, and infectious disease. A large part of pretravel health preparation is often performed by nurses and should include a comprehensive health risk assessment, education, and vaccinations, all of which c

Development of DNA Aptamers Against Plasmodium falciparum Blood Stages Using Cell-Systematic Evolution of Ligands by EXponential Enrichment.

New biomarkers have to be developed in order to increase the performance of current antigen-based malaria rapid diagnosis. Antibody production often involves the use of laboratory animals and is time-consuming and costly, especially when the target is Plasmodium, whose variable antigen expression complicates the development of long-lived biomarkers. To circumvent these obstacles, we have applied the Systematic Evolution of Ligands by EXponential enrichment method to the rapid identification of DNA aptamers against Plasmodium falciparum-infected red blood cells (pRBCs). Five 70 b-long ssDNA seq

Plasmodium knowlesi-mediated zoonotic malaria: A challenge for elimination.

Malaria, a mosquito-transmitted parasitic disease, has been targeted for elimination in many parts of the world. For many years, Plasmodium vivax, Plasmodium falciparum, Plasmodium ovale and Plasmodium malariae have been known to cause malaria in humans. Now, Plasmodium knowlesi is considered to be an important cause of malaria, especially in Southeast Asia. The emergence of P. knowlesi with zoonotic implication is a challenge in the elimination efforts of malaria in Southeast Asia. P. knowlesi is known to cause severe complicated malaria in humans. P. knowlesi parasite is transmitted between
