OBJECTIVES: Complex congenital heart defects that present earlier in life are sometimes channelled in the single ventricle pathway, because of anatomical or logistic challenges involved in biventricular correction. Given the long-term functional and survival advantage, and with the surgeons' improved understanding of the cardiac anatomy, we have consciously explored the feasibility of a biventricular repair in these patients when they presented later for Fontan completion. We present a single institution's 10-year experience in achieving biventricular septation of prior univentricular repairs,

BACKGROUND: Extralobar pulmonary sequestration can undergo torsion within the pleural cavity, which represents a rare and the most severe complication in childhood. To date, no data have been published on the use of contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) in extralobar pulmonary sequestration with torsion.
OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to retrospectively analyse the sonographic features of pediatric extralobar pulmonary sequestration with torsion on gray-scale ultrasound (US) and CEUS.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective observational study was conducted in eight children with cl

BACKGROUND: Congenital anomalies are common, costly, and potentially life-threatening. The impacts of structural determinants of health on risk for these conditions have scarcely been studied. We evaluated associations between residence in economically disadvantaged neighborhoods or Hispanic/Latino enclaves and congenital anomalies.
METHODS: We performed a registry linkage study of 7.25 million births and 332,935 cases with anomalies in Texas, 1999-2018. We defined exposure groups using maternal residential address at delivery or termination and tract-level Yost socioeconomic index and Hispan

Liposomal amphotericin B (AmBisome) is a lipid-associated formulation of the broad-spectrum polyene antifungal agent amphotericin B. It is active against clinically relevant yeasts and moulds, including Candida spp., Aspergillus spp. and filamentous moulds such as Zygomycetes, and is approved for the treatment of invasive fungal infections in many countries worldwide. It was developed to improve the tolerability profile of amphotericin B deoxycholate, which was for many decades considered the gold standard of antifungal treatment, despite being associated with infusion-related events and nephr

Food safety is a critical public health issue worldwide as the consumption of unhygienic food causes millions of illnesses annually. The contaminated food is primarily unsafe due to the presence of microorganisms (i.e. bacteria and viruses), chemicals (i.e. pesticides and heavy metals), and physical hazards (i.e. glass, metal and plastic). Foodborne illnesses such as salmonellosis, campylobacteriosis, listeriosis, E. coli infection, botulism, cholera, norovirus infection, and others are commonly caused by the problems associated with food hygiene. From the modest beginnings rooted in basic hyg

The month of March is dedicated to Colon Cancer Awareness. Worldwide, colorectal cancer (CRC) incidence has been on the rise. It is currently the third most common cancer in men (746,000 cases, 10.0% of the total) and the second in women (614,000 cases, 9.2% of the total).1 Arecent meta-analysis reported a 61% risk reduction in CRC incidence with colonoscopy.2 Unlike screening programs for breast and prostate cancers, not only has CRC screening reduced mortality from colon cancer and detected early CRC, it has also decreased the incidence of CRC through detection and removal of pre-cancerous l

Anomalous origin of coronary arteries from the pulmonary artery (ACAPA) are rare but clinically significant condition with high mortality if left untreated. Even more rarely, ACAPA is associated with other congenital heart defects. From 1974 to 2024, 120 patients with anomalous coronary arteries connected to the pulmonary artery were retrospectively analyzed. Medical records including surgical operative notes and angiography protocols were screened for any other cardiac and extracardiac defects. Anomalous left coronary artery connected to the pulmonary artery (ALCAPA) was present in 103 patien

Unilateral pulmonary artery agenesis (UPAA) is the complete absence of either the right or left pulmonary artery. It is a rare congenital malformation, usually associated with other cardiac defects; however, in some cases, it may occur as an isolated lesion, typically affecting the right side. Patients with isolated right pulmonary artery agenesis are often diagnosed incidentally on chest radiographs in adulthood. Rare cases are associated with multiple systemic collaterals that supply the affected lung. We report the case of a 69-year-old man with the absence of a right pulmonary artery, arte

BACKGROUND: 2D-echocardiography (2DE) has been the primary imaging modality in children with Kawasaki disease (KD) to assess coronary arteries.
AIM: To report the presence and implications of incidental congenital coronary artery anomalies that had been misinterpreted as coronary artery abnormalities (CAAs) on 2DE.
METHODS: Records of children diagnosed with KD, who underwent computed tomography coronary angiography (CTCA) at our center between 2013-2023 were reviewed. We identified 3 children with congenital coronary artery anomalies in this cohort on CTCA. Findings of CTCA and 2DE were com

In conjunction with catheter angiography, high-resolution, isotropic, three-dimensional computed tomography mapping of major aortopulmonary collateral arteries is useful for delineating complex thoracic arterial anatomy and has been increasingly utilized in patients with pulmonary atresia and ventricular septal defect. The presence, confluence, and size of the central (mediastinal native) pulmonary artery; the presence and course of a patent ductus arteriosus; the number of collateral arteries; the number of lung segments supplied by each collateral artery; significant distal pulmonary artery

The detailed mechanism of pulmonary arteriovenous malformations after Glenn surgery (G-PAVMs) in cyanotic congenital heart disease (CHD) remains unclear. Microarray in situ hybridization was performed to assess the miRNA (miRNA) profiles of serum from pediatric patients (0-6 years of age) with G-PAVMs and after the Fontan procedure without G-PAVMs. In addition, we investigated the tube formation, migration, and proliferation of human lung microvascular endothelial cells (HMVEC-L) transfected with miR-25-3p mimic, miR-25-3p inhibitor, or PHLPP2 small interfering RNA, and examined HIF-1α/VEGF-A

Within the last 5 years, the FDA approved use of the Amplatzer Piccolo Occluder (Abbot Structural Heart, CA) for transcatheter patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) closure in premature infants. Other devices have been used off-label to successfully perform this procedure, including the Microvascular Plug, "MVP" (Medtronic, Minneapolis, MN). We report the largest single-center experience with PDA closure in premature infants using the MVP device. A retrospective review of transcatheter premature infant PDA closures at a single center was performed. Procedures performed using the MVP device were inclu

Pulmonary artery size has been studied as an outcome predictor for selected congenital heart surgeries but has not been investigated in pediatric and congenital heart transplantation. We sought to evaluate pre-operative pulmonary artery size as a predictor of post-transplant outcomes. This single center retrospective study included all patients transplanted from 2014 to 2023. Echocardiography, computed tomography angiography (CTA), and catheter angiography were used to measure pre-operative pulmonary artery size. Cross-sectional areas were calculated and indexed to calculate Nakata index and l

Thoracic vascular congenital anomalies are malformations with significant clinical implications. One of the rarest anomalies is the anomalous origin of the brachiocephalic trunk from the pulmonary trunk, often associated with serious complications such as pulmonary hypertension. Diagnosis is facilitated by advanced imaging techniques, including MRI and CT scans. We present a case of a premature newborn with congenital heart disease (hypoplastic right ventricle) who developed respiratory and septic complications. A CT angiography revealed a left innominate artery arising from the pulmonary trun

Patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) stenting is rapidly emerging as an initial palliative option for infants with cyanotic congenital heart disease and ductal-dependent pulmonary blood flow. Although less invasive than surgical systemic to pulmonary shunt placement, the procedure is technically challenging with a notable learning curve. The highly variable anatomy of the PDA contributes to procedural complexity, success rates, and adverse outcomes. This technical review proposes a scheme of best practices for PDA stenting based on the authors' experience and existing literature. We review pre-, int

Angioplasty using ultra-high-pressure (UHP) balloons may successfully treat stenotic lesions refractory to high-pressure dilation. The use of UHP balloons in patients with congenital heart disease is mostly for dilation of the pulmonary artery, and there have been few reports on the effectiveness and safety of balloons for other sites. We retrospectively evaluated the efficacy and safety of the ultra-high-pressure balloon angioplasty (UHP-BA) for stenotic lesions in patients with congenital heart disease between January 2020 and December 2022 at Okayama University Hospital. A total of 78 UHP-B

BACKGROUND: The persistently patent arterial duct accounts for ~12% of congenital heart lesions. Untreated, it may result in heart failure due to volume loading of the left heart, pulmonary hypertension, and infective endarteritis. Percutaneous device closure is the preferred occlusion technique, with the standard approach consisting of femoral artery access for angiography and venous access for device delivery (AA). A venous-only strategy (VA) for angiography and device delivery can also be employed.
HYPOTHESIS: We hypothesized that VA would eliminate the need of arterial entry, reduce proce

Pulmonary arteriovenous malformation (PAVM) is a rare, pathological, intrapulmonary, right-to-left shunt resulting from abnormal communication between the pulmonary artery and pulmonary vein. It can remain asymptomatic and/or suddenly manifest with life-threatening complications. A 13-year-old girl presented with giddiness, falling over and loss of consciousness. She was the fourth child of non-consanguineous parents, and two of her older siblings had died: a girl at 2 years of age owing to suspected pneumonia, and a boy at 8 years of age owing to falling over and convulsions. She had dyspnoea

BACKGROUND: The Yasui procedure combines the elements of the Norwood and Rastelli operations. It can be performed in a single stage during the neonatal period or as a staged procedure. Long-term survival and reintervention data are limited. We present the largest single-institution report on outcomes after the Yasui procedure.
METHODS: A retrospective review was performed of patients who underwent the Yasui operation at our institution from 2001 to 2020. Patients were divided into 2 groups, primary and staged Yasui. The outcomes of interest were overall survival and freedom from reoperation.
