We report two congenitally malformed hearts found at autopsy to have common arterial trunk and pulmonary atresia. Both exhibited usual atrial arrangement, along with concordant atrioventricular connections. In one case, the common arterial trunk arose predominantly from the right ventricle, while the other had a balanced commitment. In both, the atretic pulmonary trunk arose from the left posterolateral aspect of the common trunk. Confluent right and left pulmonary arteries, which were hypoplastic but patent, were present. On the inner aspect of the common trunk, there was a dimple immediately

BACKGROUND: The outcomes of single-ventricle palliation in unbalanced atrioventricular canal defect with coarctation of aorta (uAVC+CoA) have not been well studied. Systemic ventricle outflow tract obstruction has a propensity to develop in these patients after aortic arch repair with pulmonary artery banding (arch-PAB), which may adversely affect survival and Fontan candidacy.
METHODS: A retrospective review was performed of patients who underwent single-ventricle palliation for uAVC+CoA from 2000 to 2022. Patients were divided into 2 groups based on initial palliation: (1) arch-PAB and (2)

OBJECTIVE: Total cavo-pulmonary connection (TCPC) is a palliative treatment for single ventricular malformations. For high-risk patients (preoperative mean pulmonary arterial pressure, mPAP > 15 mmHg), between the inhaled and oral targeted medications, the application of intravenous treprostinil as a bridge therapy to achieve "seamless" management is core postoperative treatment. This study intends to explore the effect of different administration regimens on early postoperative recovery.
METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort study. High-risk pediatric patients (age ≤ 14 years) who underwe

Alagille syndrome (ALGS) is an autosomal dominant, multisystemic disease with a high interindividual variability. The two causative genes JAG1 and NOTCH2 are expressed during kidney development, can be reactivated during adulthood kidney disease, and Notch signalling is essential for vascular morphogenesis and remodelling in mice. Liver disease is the most frequent and severe involvement; neonatal cholestasis occurs in 85% of cases, pruritus in 74%, xanthomas in 24% of cases, and the cumulative incidences of portal hypertension and liver transplantation are 66% and 50% respectively at 18 years

VACTERL is an acronym that stands for a wide range of congenital anomalies, including vertebral anomalies, tracheoesophageal fistula, anorectal anomalies (anal atresia), cardiac anomalies, renal anomalies, and limb malformations. While not a true syndrome, the co-occurrence of these findings suggests a common underlying cause. Here, we present a case of a 28-day-old neonate with suspected VACTERL association. The baby was delivered preterm to non-consanguineous parents. The baby had vertebral abnormalities, renal defects, an imperforate anus, a posterior urethral valve, and an absent right pul

We present the case of a 14-year-old adolescent boy with a history of poorly controlled asthma and a final diagnosis of a bridge bronchus associated with sling of the left pulmonary artery. Regarding the case report, we describe the characteristic findings in computerized tomography multidetector of the thorax, its classification, and the most relevant information about this malformation. Congenital malformations of the tracheobronchial tree may occur in the context of asymptomatic or symptomatic respiratory patients. These malformations may be associated with other vascular, tracheal, and syn

Congenital heart disease (CHD) is the most frequent birth defect and a leading cause of infant mortality, emphasizing the crucial need for its early diagnosis. Ultrasound is the primary imaging modality for prenatal CHD screening. As a complement to the four-chamber view, the three-vessel view (3VV) plays a vital role in detecting anomalies in the great vessels. However, the interpretation of fetal cardiac ultrasound images is subjective and relies heavily on operator experience, leading to variability in CHD detection rates, particularly in resource-constrained regions. In this study, we prop

BACKGROUND: Ventricular septal defect (VSD) is the most common congenital cardiac malformation, accounting for approximately 30% of congenital heart defects. Conventional surgical repair using cardiopulmonary bypass is invasive and associated with morbidities and prolonged hospital stay. With the advent of interventional approaches and availability of different occluding devices, the technique of perventricular device closure is evolving and being implemented successfully in larger groups of patients. We present herein, our initial experience of perventricular device closure for the ventricula

This study aimed to analyze prenatal cardiac ultrasound markers of outcome in fetuses with Ebstein's anomaly (EA). From a retrospective database, 35 fetuses diagnosed with EA at fetal medicine centers in Brazil, Italy, and Poland were retrieved. The primary outcome was perinatal mortality. We analyzed prenatal cardiac ultrasound markers of outcomes and perinatal follow-up. Gestational age at diagnosis, extracardiac fetal anomalies, spontaneous fetal demise, and gestational age at each event were recorded. In postnatal survivors, data on cardiac surgery and short-term postoperative outcomes wer

BACKGROUND & AIM: Congenital heart disease (CHD) is the most common cause of non-infectious deaths in infants worldwide. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying CHD remain unclear. Approximately 30 % of the causes are believed to be genetic mutations and chromosomal abnormalities. In this study, we aimed to identify the genetic causes of CHD in consanguineous families.
METHODS: Fourth-generation pedigrees with CHD were recruited. The main cardiac features of the patient included absence of the right pulmonary artery and a large dilated left pulmonary artery. To determine the underlying g

Single coronary artery (SCA) is a rare malformation, particularly in isolation without other congenital heart defects. Here, we describe a case of sudden infantile death due to myocardial ischemia associated with undiagnosed SCA. A 1-year-and-7-month-old female infant died suddenly after vomiting at home. A medicolegal autopsy revealed that the orifice of the right coronary artery (RCA) was absent. As expected, the left coronary artery was detached from the left coronary sinus; however, the ostium was covered with a flap-like fibrous ridge. The thin RCA originated from the left main trunk (LMT

The diagnostic algorithm for histoplasmosis highlights the importance of imaging and emphasizes the role of the radiologist in the diagnostic workup. Here we describe a case series of patients with a novel sign of lung involvement in histoplasmosis which we have coined the Pseudo-Pulmonary Arteriovenous Malformation (PAVM) sign, the usage of which would help in the imaging diagnosis of histoplasmosis aid by distinguishing it from PAVMs. PAVMs carry risk for serious complications such as systemic emboli and may require treatment; whereas, histoplasmomas do not. Differentiation of histoplasmosis

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Taussig Bing anomaly (TBA), a subtype of double outlet right ventricle, is a rare congenital cardiac malformation. TBA consists of double outlet right ventricle, sub-pulmonary ventricular septal defect, and side-by-side localization of the great arteries. The association of pulmonary artery and pulmonary valve stenosis with TBA is an uncommon phenomenon.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 2-day-old male neonate presented with central cyanosis and poor breastfeeding following birth. His mother had no history of drug use or medical issues during pregnancy. The neonate was diagnos

Assessment of pulmonary regurgitation (PR) guides treatment for patients with congenital heart disease. Quantitative assessment of PR fraction (PRF) by echocardiography is limited. Cardiac MRI (cMRI) is the reference-standard for PRF quantification. We created an algorithm to predict cMRI-quantified PRF from echocardiography using machine learning (ML). We retrospectively performed echocardiographic measurements paired to cMRI within 3 months in patients with ≥ mild PR from 2009 to 2022. Model inputs were vena contracta ratio, PR index, PR pressure half-time, main and branch pulmonary artery d

Noonan syndrome (NS) is a pleomorphic genetic disorder. Up to 50-80% of individuals have associated congenital heart disease. The scope of cardiac disease in NS is quite variable depending on the gene mutation. The most common forms of cardiac defects include pulmonary stenosis, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), atrial septal defect and left-sided lesions. Amongst the rare vascular abnormalities few case reports have been mentioned about coronary artery lesions apart from sinus of Valsalva aneurysm, aortic dissection, intracranial aneurysm. This is a case report a rare case of asymptomatic co

The last 40 years have shown dramatic improvement in outcomes for neonatal cardiac surgery for a spectrum of congenital heart disease diagnoses. With more patients surviving into adulthood, the long-term impact of initial management strategies of these patients has come into focus. This is particularly true for patients with pediatric heart valve disease. Many patients born with right ventricular to pulmonary artery (RVPA) discontinuity require placement of a valved conduit in the neonatal period. Valved conduit options are limited in this patient population due to patient size and inability t

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary artery stenosis, neoaortic dilatation, and neoaortic valve insufficiency are among the most frequent complications of the arterial switch operation for repair of dextro-transposition of the great arteries (d-TGA). It remains difficult to predict which patients will require great arterial reintervention.
OBJECTIVE: We aimed to characterize hemodynamics within the great arteries using 4D flow MRI in patients with d-TGA after the arterial switch operation.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients with d-TGA after the arterial switch operation and controls with normal cardiac anatom

Renal arteriovenous anomalies are uncommon. They are characterized by an abnormal vascular connection that usually bypasses the capillary bed. Most are acquired arteriovenous fistulas (AVF) while the rest are congenital or idiopathic arteriovenous malformations (AVM). AVF are usually caused by renal interventions, trauma, or neoplastic processes. They can lead to hypertension, heart failure, hematuria, and renal insufficiency. A 69-year-old woman presented with arrhythmia, tachycardia, mild ankle edema, and increasing fatigue. Right kidney color Doppler ultrasound confirmed the presence of a h
