INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Taussig Bing anomaly (TBA), a subtype of double outlet right ventricle, is a rare congenital cardiac malformation. TBA consists of double outlet right ventricle, sub-pulmonary ventricular septal defect, and side-by-side localization of the great arteries. The association of pulmonary artery and pulmonary valve stenosis with TBA is an uncommon phenomenon.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 2-day-old male neonate presented with central cyanosis and poor breastfeeding following birth. His mother had no history of drug use or medical issues during pregnancy. The neonate was diagnos

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary artery stenosis, neoaortic dilatation, and neoaortic valve insufficiency are among the most frequent complications of the arterial switch operation for repair of dextro-transposition of the great arteries (d-TGA). It remains difficult to predict which patients will require great arterial reintervention.
OBJECTIVE: We aimed to characterize hemodynamics within the great arteries using 4D flow MRI in patients with d-TGA after the arterial switch operation.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients with d-TGA after the arterial switch operation and controls with normal cardiac anatom

d-Transposition of the great arteries (d-TGA) is the most common form of congenital heart disease that presents with cyanosis in a newborn. The aorta arises from the right ventricle and the pulmonary artery arises from the left ventricle. It constitutes 3-5% of all congenital heart defects. In a simple d-TGA (about two-thirds of patients), there is no other cardiac abnormality other than a patent foramen ovale (PFO) and a patent ductus arteriosus (PDA). In a complex d-TGA additional cardiac abnormalities such as VSD, pulmonary stenosis or coronary abnormalities are present. About one-third to

Congenital heart disease (CHD) is typically detected during fetal life, infancy, or early childhood. However, there is no published data regarding the proportion of congenital heart defects that are diagnosed in adulthood or the impact of these defects. Retrospective analyses of all consecutive patients (n = 1,010) referred to an adult CHD unit between 2018 and 2023. We analyzed the proportion of cases diagnosed in adulthood, defining the type of defect, reasons for diagnosis, complications, and need for intervention. In total, 26.5% of patients were diagnosed in adulthood (mean age 47 ± 16 ye

Pulmonary valve replacement and right ventricular outflow tract reconstruction with valved conduits have been the shortcomings of paediatric cardiac surgeons in the treatment of CHD. In recent decades, encouraging achievements have been made in right ventricular outflow tract technology. Since Klinner reported the first right ventricle-to-pulmonary artery connection using unvalved conduits made of autologous pericardium in 1964, various right ventricle-to-pulmonary artery conduits have gradually been used in the treatment of various complex CHD. Compared with other materials, valved homograft

BACKGROUND: Neonates with congenital heart disease (CHD) have smaller brain volume at birth. High rates of placental vascular malperfusion lesions may play a role in disrupted brain development.
METHODS: This is a single-center retrospective cohort study of infants born between 2010 and 2019 who were diagnosed with a major cardiac defect requiring surgery in the first year of life. Doppler ultrasound RI of the middle cerebral artery (MCA) and anterior cerebral artery were calculated within the first 72 hours of life. Placentas were evaluated using a standardized approach.
RESULTS: Over the s

Dextro-transposition of the great arteries (D-TGA) is the second most common cyanotic heart disease, accounting for 5-7% of all congenital heart defects (CHDs). It is characterized by ventriculoarterial (VA) connection discordance, atrioventricular (AV) concordance, and a parallel relationship with D-TGA. As a result, the pulmonary and systemic circulations are separated [the morphological right ventricle (RV) is connected to the aorta and the morphological left ventricle (LV) is connected to the pulmonary artery]. This anomaly is included in the group of developmental disorders of embryonic h

OBJECTIVE: To estimate the prevalence of chromosomal conditions in all fetuses and children with major congenital heart defect (CHD) in Denmark between 2008 and 2018.
METHODS: This was a national registry-based study including all singleton pregnancies with a prenatally or postnatally diagnosed major CHD usually requiring surgery within the first year after birth and a due date between July 2008 and December 2018 in Denmark. Data were retrieved from the Danish Fetal Medicine Database (DFMD) and the Danish Cytogenetic Central Register (DCCR) in October 2020. The DCCR contains information on al

INTRODUCTION: This single-centre retrospective study explores demographics and outcomes of patients who underwent a modified Blalock-Taussig shunt (MBTS) over a 22-year period. The predominant surgical approach in this study is a lateral thoracotomy, in contrast to a midline sternotomy. Risks and outcomes of this approach are compared with national and international literature.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Demographic, anatomical, clinical, surgical and outcome data of all patients who underwent a MBTS between 2000 and 2022 were collected and analysed, excluding Norwood procedures, which are not pe

BACKGROUND: Patients with congenital heart disease (CHD) are at lifelong high risk of infective endocarditis (IE). The risk of IE presumably differs among different CHD, but little knowledge exists on the area.
METHODS: In this observational cohort study, all CHD-patients born in 1977 to 2018 were identified using Danish nationwide registries and followed from the date of birth until first-time IE, emigration, death, or end of study (December 31, 2018). The comparative risk of IE among CHD-patients vs age- and sex-matched controls from the background population was assessed. The risk of IE wa

The Mustard procedure was an early cardiac surgery for transposition of the great arteries (TGA). Despite being successful, it has been associated with long-term arrhythmias and heart failure. A key factor complicating management in adults with congenital heart disease (CHD) is the deficiency of biomarkers predicting outcome. Soluble suppression of tumorogenicity-2 (sST2) is secreted by cardiomyocytes in response to mechanical strain and fibrosis. We hypothesized that adults with a Mustard procedure would have higher levels of sST2 than healthy individuals, and this would correlate with clinic

Congenitally corrected transposition of great arteries is a rare anomaly which are responsible for 0.5% of all CHDs and can be associated with other congenital cardiac abnormalities. Association of congenitally corrected transposition of great arteries and isolated atrial septal defect is a very rare condition, and management of this association is challenging. In this paper, we describe three patients with congenitally corrected transposition of great arteries and isolated atrial septal defect who were admitted to our clinic and all of them underwent percutaneous closure of defect. From 2017

BACKGROUND: Characterization of brain injury and neurodevelopmental (ND) outcomes in critical congenital heart disease (cCHD) has primarily focused on hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS) and transposition of the great arteries (TGA). This study reports brain injury and ND outcomes among patients with heterogeneous cCHD diagnoses beyond HLHS and TGA.
METHODS: This prospective cohort study included infants with HLHS, TGA, or heterogenous "Other cCHD" including left- or right-sided obstructive lesions, anomalous pulmonary venous return, and truncus arteriosus. Brain injury on perioperative br

OBJECTIVE: To determine patient characteristics and outcomes after Norwood versus comprehensive stage II (COMPSII) for infants with critical left heart obstruction who had prior hybrid palliation (bilateral pulmonary artery banding ± ductal stent).
METHODS: From 23 Congenital Heart Surgeons' Society institutions (2005-2020), 138 infants underwent hybrid palliation followed by either Norwood (n = 73, 53%) or COMPSII (n = 65). Baseline characteristics were compared between Norwood and COMPSII groups. Parametric hazard model with competing risk methodology was used to determine risk and factors

Congenitally corrected transposition of the great arteries (ccTGAs) represents a complex form of congenital heart disease that is associated with several cardiac complications. Herein is a case series of three children with ccTGA and ventricular assist device (VAD) inserted for systemic right ventricle failure at a single institution. All patients remained hemodynamically stable postimplant and were successfully discharged from the intensive care unit to undergo postoperative rehabilitation. All three patients received an orthotopic heart transplant with uneventful posttransplant courses. This

Background: Children with congenital heart disease (CHD) have impaired pulmonary function both before and after surgery; therefore, pulmonary function assessments are important and should be performed both before and after open-heart surgery. This study aimed to compare pulmonary function between variant pediatric CHD types after open-heart surgery via spirometry. Methods: In this retrospective study, the data for forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiratory volume in the first second (FEV1), and the ratio between FEV1 and FVC (FEV1/FVC) were collected from patients with CHD who underwent co
