Prenatal MR Diagnosis of Total Anomalous Pulmonary Venous Connection and Related Brain Growth Changes.

BACKGROUND: Prenatal diagnosis of total anomalous pulmonary venous connection (TAPVC) is challenging, and little is known about how it affects brain development. PURPOSE: To evaluate the utility of fetal MRI to diagnose TAPVC and related brain growth changes. STUDY TYPE: Retrospective case-control study. POPULATION: Twenty-one fetuses (23.0 to 30.8 weeks, mean 26.4 weeks) with pre-natal MRI diagnosis of TAPVC. Post-natal images and surgery were available in 18 fetuses. Brain volumes in TAPVC fetuses were compared with age and sex matched 100 cases of normal controls and 38 fetuses with tetr

Postoperative systemic arterial hypertension in infants with congenital heart diseases: prevalence and risk factors.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence rate and risk factors for systemic arterial hypertension in infants with congenital heart diseases. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study of postoperative systemic arterial hypertension incidence in infants who underwent cardiac surgery was conducted. The primary diagnosis was retrieved. The general characteristics, surgical information, and blood pressure data at five periods were also collected. The five periods were at admission, 48 hours after cardiac surgery (postoperative), at discharge, at full-time, and at any time during hospitalisation. The ris

Factor Analysis of the Missed Diagnosis of Total Anomalous Pulmonary Venous Connection in Prenatal Echocardiography.

AIM: This study investigated the major factors contributing to the missed diagnosis of total anomalous pulmonary venous connection (TAPVC) in fetal echocardiography. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the prenatal ultrasonic images of 32 fetuses with missed diagnoses of TAPVC, compared them with autopsy and postnatal surgical records, and summarized the most likely reasons leading to the missed diagnoses. RESULTS: We studied a total of 157 fetuses with TAPVC, 32 (20.3%) of whom were missed in prenatal echocardiography. The main factors for the missed diagnoses of TAPVC in the 32 fetuses we

Supracardiac type of total anomalous pulmonary venous connection: Diagnosis and demonstration by multidetector CT angiography.

Pulmonary venous developmental anomalies have historically been evaluated using echocardiography and catheter-based angiography. In recent years, however, multidetector CT angiography (MDCTA) and MR angiography have become increasingly important tools for detailed characterization of these anomalies. This case report provides an in-depth review of the radiologic findings in a 15-year-old patient diagnosed with the supracardiac type of Total Anomalous Pulmonary Venous Connection (TAPVC). The report emphasizes the imaging features that were instrumental in the diagnosis and underscores the cruci

Modified Technique for Repairing Recurrent Pulmonary Venous Obstruction.

Postoperative pulmonary venous obstruction after the repair of total anomalous pulmonary venous connection is a challenging complication, especially when it occurs in the upstream pulmonary vein outside the pericardial sac. Here, we report such a case that was resolved successfully by a novel, modified, sutureless technique that repositioned the pericardial reflection to expand the pericardial sac.

Repair of infracardiac total anomalous pulmonary venous connection in a 902-gram infant with asplenia syndrome after failed umbilical venous catheter intervention.

UNLABELLED: Ductus venosus stenting via a transumbilical approach for pulmonary venous obstruction in infracardiac total anomalous pulmonary venous connection has been described. In a 902-gram infant who was diagnosed with asplenia syndrome and infracardiac total anomalous pulmonary venous connection, ductus venosus stenting was attempted by a transumbilical approach. However, ductus venosus stenting was discontinued due to bleeding from the portal vein. The bleeding subsided in time spontaneously, and total anomalous pulmonary venous connection repair with pulmonary artery banding was perform

Surgical correction of total anomalous pulmonary venous connection to persistent left-sided superior vena cava: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Total anomalous pulmonary venous connection (TAPVC) to left superior vena cava (LSVC) is an extremely rare congenital heart disease, and its surgical management is very challenging. CASE SUMMARY: We report one such case of a 5-year-old south Asian male with double outlet right ventricle and unbalanced atrioventricular canal defect, where all the pulmonary veins were found opening into LSVC, which was then opening into the left side of the common atrium. Intraoperatively, the LSVC was transected just below the left internal jugular vein and left subclavian vein junction and left-si

Neonatal Atrial Flutter: A Novel Triad for Immediate Electrocardiographic Diagnosis.

Neonatal atrial flutter (NAF) is a rare type of macroreentrant supraventricular tachycardia. In this report, we describe a case of atrial flutter in an 8-day-old neonate with a total anomalous pulmonary venous connection. Additionally, we introduce a diagnostic triad for electrocardiographic identification of this condition. This triad comprises three components: the Similar Shapes of Inter-QRS segments (SIS) in leads II, III, and aVF, Different Shapes of Inter-QRS Segments (DIS) in lead I, and the occurrence of one or multiple stretched M or inverted V shapes in the inter-QRS (IQS) segment in

Ultrasound and computed tomography angiography diagnosis of fetal right atrial isomerism with cardiac total anomalous pulmonary venous connection and intestinal malrotation: a case report and literature review.

Right atrial isomerism is a rare and severe isomerism. It is frequently associated with complex congenital heart disease and various extracardiac anomalies. Imaging diagnosis of right atrial isomerism is a challenge. Multisystem and complex anomalies in a 24-week-old fetus were diagnosed with prenatal ultrasound, postnatal computed tomography angiography (CTA), and autopsy. The ultrasound detected most major cardiovascular anomalies including right atrial isomerism and total anomalous pulmonary venous connection. The CTA further detected thoracic and abdominal malformations such as bilateral m

Fetal left-atrial posterior-space-to-diagonal ratio at 17-37 weeks' gestation for prediction of total anomalous pulmonary venous connection.

OBJECTIVES: To develop normative data for the left-atrial posterior-space-to-diagonal (LAPSD) ratio and post-left atrium space (PLAS) index in fetuses from 17 to 37 weeks' gestation, and determine the optimal cut-offs of the LAPSD ratio and PLAS index to discriminate between normal fetuses and those with total anomalous pulmonary venous connection (TAPVC). METHODS: This was a prospective cross-sectional assessment of 428 structurally normal fetuses between 17 and 37 weeks' gestation and a retrospective study of 27 TAPVC fetuses. The fetal LAPSD ratio was calculated by dividing the left atrium

Reintervention and mortality risk after total anomalous pulmonary venous connection repair.

BACKGROUND: Management of total anomalous pulmonary venous connections has been extensively studied to further improve outcomes. Our institution previously reported factors associated with mortality, recurrent obstruction, and reintervention. The study purpose was to revisit the cohort of patients and evaluate factors associated with reintervention, and mortality in early and late follow-up. METHODS: A retrospective review at our institution identified 81 patients undergoing total anomalous pulmonary venous connection repair from January 2002 to January 2018. Demographic and operative variabl

Total anomalous pulmonary venous connection in 80 patients: Primary sutureless repair and outcomes.

INTRODUCTION: Total anomalous pulmonary venous connection (TAPVC) is a rare but critical cardiac anomaly, in which pulmonary veins are connected to an abnormal location rather than the left atrium. The prognosis can be extremely poor without intervention, with a mortality of 80% during infancy. The purpose of this research is to summarize the outcomes and relevant risk factors of 80 total anomalous pulmonary venous connection (TAPVC) patients who underwent primary TAPVC sutureless repair and discuss the indications and benefits of primary sutureless repair. METHODS: This retrospective review

Infracardiac obstructive total anomalous pulmonary venous return with ventricular septal defect: a rare anomaly.

The infracardiac variant of total anomalous pulmonary venous return occurs only rarely and is frequently obstructive in nature, thereby presenting in the early days of life [1]. An atrial septal defect is present in most cases and is necessary for survival, but a ventricular septal defect is extremely rare; only a few cases have been reported. Surgery is the only treatment option but carries a high risk of morbidity and mortality.

Case report: Thoughts on two cases of total anomalous pulmonary venous connection complicated with pulmonary artery hypertension.

The two primary pathological alterations of total anomalous pulmonary venous connection (TAPVC), a rare cyanotic congenital heart disease (CHD), are right heart failure and pulmonary artery hypertension (PAH). The timing and prognosis of surgery depend on the level of pulmonary hypertension. Surgery will not be an option after Eisenmenger syndrome appears. In light of this, it is crucial to assess patients' PAH. In order to aid in the following treatment of related types of diseases, this article studied and compared the echocardiographic features and disease development of one adult and one c
