Persistent exertional dyspnea following SARS-CoV-2 infection is frequently attributed to post-viral pulmonary pathology. When symptoms are accompanied by right ventricular (RV) dilation and pulmonary hypertension without elevated left-sided filling pressures, alternative etiologies including congenital heart disease must be considered. A 52-year-old man with prior COVID-19 pneumonia presented with one year of progressive exertional dyspnea. Transthoracic echocardiography demonstrated preserved left ventricular systolic function with RV dilation. Right heart catheterization revealed mild precap

BACKGROUND: The Warden procedure effectively corrects partial anomalous pulmonary venous connection (PAPVC) draining into the superior vena cava (SVC), yet superior vena cava obstruction remains a serious potential complication. This report describes a rare case of acute prosthetic graft thrombosis in the SVC following Warden procedure, presenting primarily with rapid neurological deterioration and initially lacking typical signs of superior vena cava syndrome.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 51-year-old female patient underwent a Warden procedure with autologous pericardial tube reconstruction of the s

Scimitar syndrome (SS) is a rare congenital condition marked by partial anomalous pulmonary venous connection, dextroposition of the heart, right lung hypoplasia, and systemic arterial supply to the right lung. Also known as congenital veno-lobar syndrome and other names, it has been classified into three types by Lupius et al. A significant number of cases are associated with congenital heart anomalies, while association with acquired cardiac disease is rare. We present the rare case of a 39-year-old woman with exertional dyspnoea during pregnancy, initially diagnosed with mild mitral stenosi

Partial anomalous pulmonary venous connection (PAPVC) is a rare congenital anomaly, and isolated left-sided PAPVC without atrial septal defect is extremely uncommon. We report a 70-year-old man with severe mitral regurgitation, atrial fibrillation, and chronic kidney disease, in whom preoperative imaging incidentally revealed left upper pulmonary vein drainage into the innominate vein via a vertical vein. Hemodynamic evaluation demonstrated a significant left-to-right shunt [pulmonary flow/systemic flow( Qp/Qs) =1.88]. Surgical treatment consisted of direct anastomosis of the vertical vein to

BACKGROUND: Choosing an orthopedic surgeon is a pivotal decision shaped by clinical competence and multiple non-clinical influences. While surgical expertise and outcomes are fundamental considerations, patients and their families also weigh communication quality, cultural alignment, institutional reputation, financial constraints, and increasingly, digital information sources. Understanding these determinants is crucial to delivering patient-centered orthopedic care.
METHODS: A scoping review was conducted following Arksey and O'Malley's framework and reported in accordance with PRISMA-ScR g

AIMS: Atrial septal defect (ASD) and partial abnormal pulmonary venous connection (PAPVC) are non-cyanotic congenital heart defects (CHDs) that produce a left-to-right shunt. This single-centre retrospective study aimed to assess the haemodynamic impact of isolated ASD, isolated PAPVC, and ASD-associated PAPVC using cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR).
METHODS AND RESULTS: From our CMR registry (2002-24), 110 patients were included: isolated ASD (n = 64), isolated PAPVC (n = 18), and ASD-associated PAPVC (n = 28, mostly sinus venosus septal defects). CMR included geometric assessment of t

OBJECTIVES: Mixed reality (MixR) is an innovative visualization tool that presents virtual elements in a real-world environment, enabling real-time interaction between the user and the combined digital/physical reality. We aimed to explore the feasibility of MixR in enhancing preoperative planning and intraoperative guidance for the correction of various complex congenital heart defects.
METHODS: Patients underwent cardiac computed tomography or cardiac magnetic resonance imaging and segmentation of digital imaging and communications in medicine images was performed. Three-dimensional models

BACKGROUND: Right anterolateral thoracotomy or left anterolateral thoracotomy applied to partial anomalous pulmonary venous connection correction have been reported to obtain cosmetic and less invasive outcomes as alternative approaches to median sternotomy. However, the application of different approaches is still confusing. We compared the perioperative and mid-term outcomes to seek indications of different approaches and guide surgical treatment of partial anomalous pulmonary venous connection.
METHODS: From July 2019 to August 2023, 44 patients who underwent surgical correction of partial

Acute heart failure (AHF) is a critical condition with significant morbidity and mortality, necessitating timely and accurate diagnosis for effective management. The Venous Excess Ultrasound (VExUS) score has emerged as a non-invasive diagnostic tool, aimed at evaluating venous congestion through ultrasound. This scoring system integrates assessments of the inferior vena cava, hepatic veins, portal veins, and renal venous flow to quantify congestion severity. By providing a real-time assessment of venous pressure, the VExUS score has shown potential in optimizing early diagnosis of AHF and pre

RATIONALE: Partial anomalous pulmonary venous connection (PAPVC) is a rare congenital vascular anomaly that often remains undetected in asymptomatic patients. While most cases are hemodynamically insignificant, failure to recognize PAPVC preoperatively may lead to intraoperative misidentification and surgical complications. Coexistence of PAPVC and lung cancer, particularly on the ipsilateral side, is extremely rare and poses challenges for surgical decision-making.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 55-year-old man, asymptomatic and uncharacteristic in his past medical history, presented with an abnormal s

We report a young cardiac surgery patient who developed severe aspiration pneumonia due to postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) despite prophylactic and therapeutic administration of multiple antiemetic agents. A 19-year-old woman underwent corrective surgery for partial anomalous pulmonary venous connection. On postoperative day (POD) 1, she was extubated after receiving dexamethasone (6.6 mg), droperidol (1 mg), and granisetron (1 mg) for PONV prophylaxis. Despite metoclopramide, nausea persisted. On POD 2, severe aspiration pneumonia followed massive vomiting, worsening oxygenation. Thu

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: The tricuspid annulus (TA) in congenital heart diseases (CHD) may undergo significant changes in size, shape, and function due to hemodynamic overload. This study aimed to compare TA remodeling in children with CHD based on the type of right ventricle (RV) overload, using three-dimensional transthoracic echocardiography (3D-TTE).
METHODS: This prospective case-control study included children with CHD who were divided into 2 groups based on the type of RV overload. Using 3D-TTE, we assessed the dimensions of the right chambers, the surface area, and the tenting vol

BACKGROUND: Fetal cardiovascular magnetic resonance is an emerging tool for prenatal congenital heart disease assessment, but long acquisition times and fetal movements limit its clinical use. This study evaluates the clinical utility of deep learning super-resolution reconstructions for rapidly acquired, low-resolution fetal cardiovascular magnetic resonance.
METHODS: This prospective study included participants with fetal congenital heart disease undergoing fetal cardiovascular magnetic resonance in the third trimester of pregnancy, with axial cine images acquired at normal resolution and l

INTRODUCTION: Partial anomalous pulmonary venous return (PAPVR) can be treated with either the single- or double-patch technique. In this study, we evaluated the results of both techniques in adult patients with PAPVR.
METHODS: We reviewed the records of 29 patients treated for PAPVR in two groups, according to which surgical technique was used.
RESULTS: Double- and single-patch repair techniques were performed in 12 (group 1) and 17 patients (group 2),respectively. In group 2, three patients with a distance of more than 10 mm between the ostium of the anomalous pulmonary vein and the cava-a
