There have been no anatomical reports on the origin of the bronchial artery derived from the coronary artery. In a 2006 cadaveric dissection course, an anomalous bronchial artery that reached the middle lobe of the right lung from the left coronary artery was observed in an 88-year-old Japanese man. In this specimen, the circumflex branch of the left coronary artery passed under the left auricle in the coronary sulcus and bifurcated to three branches (left marginal branch, posterior left ventricular branch, atrial branch), which were 3.2-3.4 mm in diameter. The atrial branch intersected on the

BACKGROUND: Coronary artery ectasia (CAE) is characterized by an abnormal dilatation of the coronary arteries. The most common cause of CAE is atherosclerosis but other possible etiologies include congenital abnormalities and inflammatory and connective tissue disease. Earlier studies have documented the association of CAE with the presence of aneurysms in other vascular beds. However, cardiac venous system in patients with isolated CAE has not been studied earlier. In this study, we aimed to assess coronary venous vessels by antegrade coronary venous angiography in patients with isolated CAE.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the influence of coronary artery variation on the outcome of arterial switch operation for transposition of great arteries.
METHODS: Among 280 patients undergoing arterial switch operations at our hospital from 2001 to 2008, 73 (26.1%) had concurrent coronary arteries variation (54 males and 19 females; median age: 0.6 ± 1.1 years old; mean body weight: 5.8 ± 2.6 kg). Of these 73 patients (variant group), 21 cases had transposition of great arteries with a ventricular septal defect and 30 cases with an intact ventricular septum. The other 22 cases were of Taussig-Bin

The inferior vena cava, also known as the posterior vena cava, is the large vein that carries de-oxygenated blood from the lower half of the body into the right atrium of the heart. Congenital anomalies of the inferior vena cava result from the persistence of the embryonic venous system. The majority of cases are clinically silent and are diagnosed in routine dissection studies, in retroperitoneal surgeries, or through imaging for other reasons. Although these anomalies are rare, they are of great importance during operations in the abdominal area or in the treatment of thromboembolic diseases

This paper aims to provide information and explanations regarding the clinically relevant options, strengths, and limitations of cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) in relation to adults with congenital heart disease (CHD). Cardiovascular magnetic resonance can provide assessments of anatomical connections, biventricular function, myocardial viability, measurements of flow, angiography, and more, without ionizing radiation. It should be regarded as a necessary facility in a centre specializing in the care of adults with CHD. Also, those using CMR to investigate acquired heart disease shoul

This condition is a rare anomaly. Combination with other congenital malformations including coarctation of the aorta, double aortic arc, transposition of great vessels and dextrocardia was reported. We performed an MRI evaluation. MRI was first obtained at cardiac level using a gated Black Blood and Cine technique, useful to confirm the enlarged coronary sinus, and then using a dynamic angiographic technique. By means of the latter modality, each frame was obtained in 5 s and was useful to demonstrate the contrast bolus through the venous, cardiac, pulmonary and systemic levels. It was possibl

OBJECTIVE: Complex intracardiac and extracardiac anatomy is often confronted during biventricular repair in patients with heterotaxy syndrome. We examined factors affecting surgical outcomes in these patients.
METHODS: Between January 1990 and July 2007, 371 patients received a diagnosis of heterotaxy syndrome; 91 (91/371, 24.5%) underwent biventricular repair. Left atrial isomerism was present in 73% (66/91) and right atrial isomerism in 10% (9/91), with indeterminate atrial anatomy in 17% (16/91). Median age at biventricular repair was 6.8 months (5 days to 22.3 years). Systemic venous anom

BACKGROUND: Corrosion casting and immunohistochemical staining with anti-alpha smooth muscle actin and anti-CD34 was utilized to demonstrate the capillary plexus and venous system in control and malformed mouse hearts.
METHODS: Outflow tract malformations (e.g., double outlet right ventricle, transposition of the great arteries, and common truncus arteriosus) were induced in progeny of pregnant mice by retinoic acid administration at day 8.5 of pregnancy.
RESULTS: Although control hearts exhibited areas in which capillaries tended to be oriented in parallel arrays, the orientation of capilla

BACKGROUND: Ultrasound-guided foam sclerotherapy is a generally safe, cost-effective, and practical technique for the treatment of certain venous malformations; however, not all vascular malformation lesions are amenable to the ultrasound-guided method. Venous outflow of the sclerosing agent and extravasation are difficult to check when only ultrasound guidance is used. This study describes a new fluoroscopy-guided technique that uses standardized sclerosing foam for peripheral venous malformations. The short-term efficacy and safety of fluoroscopy-guided foam sclerotherapy for peripheral veno

Bronchogenic cysts that formed during the development of the tracheobronchial tree in the gestational period are mostly asymptomatic until adulthood. Cysts localized in the middle mediastinum, specifically in the subcarinal region, on the other hand, may cause serious symptoms by compressing the heart and major vessels due to their close proximity. In this report it is suggested that surgical resection of a giant bronchogenic cyst that compresses the heart and great vessels should be securely performed in the presence of a readily available cardiopulmonary bypass capability.

BACKGROUND: Device implantation is sometimes required in congenitally corrected transposition of the great arteries (ccTGA) because of morphologic right ventricular (RV) dysfunction and complete heart block. The anatomical course of the veins remains unknown, despite well-described coronary arterial anatomy. Knowledge of the venous anatomy may facilitate planning of percutaneous cardiac procedures in these patients.
OBJECTIVE: This study sought to characterize the venous anatomy in ccTGA.
METHODS: Pathologic cardiac specimens from patients with ccTGA were identified from the Mayo Clinic path

The arterial switch operation (ASO) has evolved into the treatment of the choice for most forms of transposition of the great arteries (TGA). Despite advancement in the technical aspects of the procedure, certain anatomical variations of the coronary arteries are still considered as surgical risks. We have recently employed a novel technique for coronary artery reconstruction in ASO to achieve further improvement of coronary transfer in cases with complex coronary anatomy. The technical key of the procedure is that reconstruction of the coronary arteries is preceded by neo-aortic anastomosis.

Anomalous coronary venous anatomy is a little studied and rarely reported subject that is of crucial importance in interventions that rely upon the assumption of normal coronary venous anatomy. In particular, the recognition of coronary vein anomalies that disconnect large segments of the left ventricular myocardium from the main coronary sinus is critical for cardiothoracic surgeons who perform interventions involving retrograde cardioplegia and other forms of coronary venous retroperfusion. We present a rare case of an anomalous great cardiac vein that bypassed the coronary sinus to drain di

One of the factors determing the postoperative results of arterial switch operation (ASO) for complete transposition of great arteries (TGA) is coronary event (CE). We analyzed the risk factors of CE after ASO in patients whose coronary patterns excluding Shaher type 1. The subjects were 44 patients operated from 1994 to 2007. As for the coronary reconstructive technique, procedures by Mee or Aubert were conducted on patients with Shaher 5A intramural type. The conventional technique was conducted on other patients, with or without trapdoor technique. In all patients, the pulmonary artery was

Idiopathic calcification of the coronary arteries is a rare hereditary condition of infancy. Complications include cardiac ischaemia, cardiac failure, and systemic hypertension. We present three patients with this condition, which in each case masqueraded as other cardiac diseases, with no indication of the specific diagnosis prior to autopsy.A 5 month old female presented with respiratory failure and hypertension and died within 24 hours of admission. All the coronary arteries were thick-walled, with narrow lumens. The aorta, great vessels, and renal arteries also showed thickening of the wal

Orthotopic heart transplantation (HTx) was successfully performed in a 46-year-old man with congenitally corrected transposition of the great arteries. Because of the need for an extraordinary length of aorta, we preserved the aortic arch during harvesting of the donor organ. The allograft was implanted using a biatrial technique, but the heart might have to be rotated clockwise due to the posteriorlyy located pulmonary artery. The patient was well at 4 years after HTx. HTx in corrected transposition of the great arteries is technically feasible. Preservation of the aortic arch of the donor's

An anatomical-embryological correlation of anomalous venous pulmonary connection is presented to gain an insight of its pathogenesis. The basic publications on embryonic development of the pulmonary veins were analyzed in its two stages: the primary connection of these veins (collectors) with the embryonic systemic veins from which the definitive veins arise. These channels normally disappear once the pulmonary veins sinus is connected with the roof of the left atrium (secondary definitive connection); when the latter does not exist, any of the primitive channels persist and originates the ana
