A review of 36 cases of von Hippel-Lindau disease underscores the important role of the ophthalmologist in evaluating this phakomatosis. Retinal angiomatosis occurred in almost two-thirds of those affected, was usually diagnosed before other target organs, and frequently led to decreased visual acuity. Common non-ophthalmic manifestations included cerebellar (69%), medullary (11%) and spinal (8%) hemangioblastoma, renal cell carcinoma (22%), and polycythemia (17%). Apart from the usually seen diseases of the renal artery, there exists a group of disorders that occur less frequently and rarely show up as a primary disease process. Arteriovenous malformations and renal artery aneurysms are examples of these conditions. Thrombosis of the renal artery and vein are two other relatively uncommon conditions that may show no pathognomonic clinical features. This article reviews the clinical features of these rare disorders and presents diagnosis and management.

A case of renal arteriovenous fistula (A-V fistula) treated by transcatheter embolization using absolute ethanol is reported. The catheter was superselectively placed in the proximal renal artery supplying cirsoid vessels and 15 ml of absolute ethanol was injected into the renal artery at a rate of 1 ml per second. Fibro-muscular dysplasia is the principal dysplasia of the internal carotid artery (ICA). It mainly affects women and is usually diagnosed at about the age of 50. Twenty-seven patients (3 to 22 years) underwent the Fontan operation. Seventeen had tricuspid atresia and 10 had other complex lesions. In a review of 126 heart specimens of simple complete transposition of the great arteries with ventricular septal defect (VSD), coarctation was noted in eight (6%). Thirty-four cases (29 children and five adults) of congenital absence of the gall bladder were found in a retrospective necropsy study. When the distribution of associated malformations in these patients was analysed, the cases were found to fall into several groups. We report on a 9-year-old boy with severe hypertension due to a variant of fibromuscular dysplasia of the renal artery supplying a functioning pelvic kidney. The other kidney proved to be a nonfunctioning multicystic remnant and several other congenital abnormalities of the genitourinary tract were present. Corrective vascular surgery was followed by normalization of arterial pressure and significant reduction of plasma renin activity. This is the first case report of renovascular hypertension due to renal artery stenosis in a single functioning pelvic kidney.

In a newborn infant, absence of kidney, hypoplasia of the lung, absence of the subclavian artery, of the adnexa, of the upper limb and its acetabulum were found on the right side, together with renal dysgenesis and other anomalies on the left side. It is presumed that the severe anomalies damaging the right part of the body were consequences of an increased intrauterine pressure due to oligohydramnios.

The "red diaper syndrome" is caused by Serratia marcescens colonization of the gastrointestinal tract. Neoplasms are unusual causes of hematuria in children. Hematuria in the neonate may represent renal vein thrombosis, renal artery thrombosis, renal cortical necrosis or tubular necrosis. The most common cause of hematuria in children is glomerulonephritis, especially the poststreptococcal type.
