OBJECTIVES: Our objective was to describe the association between unilateral fetal renal abnormalities and other major anomalies that were not apparent in the second trimester.
METHODS: A review of the ultrasound database identified fetuses with suspected unilateral renal agenesis, unilateral multicystic dysplastic kidney, and renal ectopia from 2005 to 2014. Neonatal records were reviewed to identify anomalies not suspected in the second trimester, and postnatal imaging studies were reviewed. Categorical data were compared by &x003C7;(2) analysis and the Fisher exact test.
RESULTS: We ident

PURPOSE: Transradial pneumatic compression devices can be used to achieve haemostasis following radial artery puncture. This article describes a novel technique for acquiring haemostasis of arterio-venous haemodialysis fistula access sites without the need for suture placement using one such compression device.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective review of fistulograms with or without angioplasty/thrombectomy in a single institution was performed. 20 procedures performed on 12 patients who underwent percutaneous intervention of failing or thrombosed arterio-venous fistulas (AVF) had 27 pun

European guidelines recommend that patients with hypertension be assessed for asymptomatic organ damage and secondary causes. The authors propose that a single magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan can provide comprehensive first-line imaging of patients assessed via a specialist hypertension clinic. A total of 200 patients (56% male, aged 51±15 years, office BP 168±30/96±16 mm Hg) underwent MRI of the heart, kidneys, renal arteries, adrenals and aorta. Comparisons were made with other imaging modalities where available. A total of 61% had left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH), 14% had reduced ej

We evaluated the influence of kidney volume (KV) and liver volume (LV) on continuation of peritoneal dialysis (PD) in patients with autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (PKD). Twenty-two PKD patients on PD were retrospectively investigated after being divided into two groups. Group 1 comprised 15 patients who started PD at our hospital and group 2 was composed of seven patients referred from other hospitals for treatment of renomegaly by transcatheter arterial embolization (TAE) at 47.1 ± 21.8 months after commencing PD. In group 1, KV for both kidneys (mean ± SD) was 2787 ± 1945 mL (r

INTRODUCTION: Forearm arteries are frequently used as workhorse site for cardiac catheterization, bypass grafting and haemodialysis access. There is paucity of data on palmar circulation in live human being and only cadaveric data are available till date. We, therefore, made an attempt to look at the various patterns of sufficient or insufficient palmar arch circulation and various anomalies of forearm arteries, to discuss their clinical implications.
METHODS AND RESULTS: We obtained the forearm and hand arteriograms of patients (n = 302) through radial (n = 200) and ulnar routes (n = 102). M

Kidney transplantation originating from the hepatic artery has not previously been reported. Herein, we report a third kidney transplantation with the common hepatic artery as inflow. A 62-year-old male with chronic renal failure due to polycystic kidney disease was proposed to a third kidney transplantation. CT-scan showed diffuse calcification of the aorto-iliac axis and the splenic artery. The common hepatic artery was the only artery suitable for anastomosis and as such was chosen as the inflow for retransplantation. The operation was performed through a right subcostal laparotomy. Diabetics with stage V chronic kidney disease (CKD) on hemodialysis (HD) are considered as "difficult patients", because of problems with creation of the vascular access. There is controversy regarding the results and recommendations for preparation of the vascular access in these patients. The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate the results of creating different types of arteriovenous fistula (AVFs) in consecutive series of patients starting dialysis treatment. The analysis was performed in 741 patients (385 females and 356 males), average age 61.4±7 years, who started dialysis tr

A native arteriovenous fistula is the preferred vascular access for patients on long-term hemodialysis. In the absence of suitable superficial veins, the deep venous system can be used. We intend to present our experience in using the brachial venae comitantes (VC) to create a native arteriovenous fistula. From January 2012 to December 2014, we utilized the brachial vena comitantes to create 12 arteriovenous fistulae. Data from these 12 subjects were analyzed retrospectively to produce this case series. The average age of our subjects was 55.6 years. Forty-two percent of the subjects were wome

BACKGROUND: Although the proximal radial artery has been reported as an alternative inflow to prevent steal syndrome, brachiobasilic fistula has been reported to be associated with steal syndrome in 10-20% of cases. We aimed to compare proximal radiobasilic arteriovenous fistula (AVF) with brachiobasilic AVFs on the upper arm in terms of steal syndrome and outcomes.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We used our institutional operative record database to identify 94 patients in whom brachiobasilic AVF (n=40) and radiobasilic AVF (n=54) were placed between January 2009 and December 2013. Postoperative comp

A congenital solitary kidney with multiple renal arteries is a rare congenital abnormality that can occur in the presence of multiple other anomalies. We describe an atypical case of a right congenital solitary kidney with three renal arteries (RA) one main RA and two additional renal arteries in a 75-year-old woman with uterine didelphys. The main RA had an intraluminal diameter larger than the diameter of the additional renal arteries (AdRAs) at the origin (0.53 cm for the main RA; 0.49 cm and 0.32 cm for the two AdRAs). Both the AdRAs had a greater length than the main RA (3.51 cm for the m

Congenital arteriovenous renal fistulas are rare malformations due to abnormal communications between arterial and the venous systems. There are two types of congenital arteriovenous malformations: crisoid or, as in the present study, aneurysmal. Hematuria is the major and most common symptom, along with other clinical manifestations, such as hypertension, left ventricular hypertrophy, cardiac failure, and abdominal pain, but the congenital aneurysmatic arteriovenous renal fistulas can be also asymptomatic. Diagnosis can arise from a focused survey, suggested by a medical case or to be occasio

The pattern of anatomical organization of the thoraco-abdominal visceral and vascular structures which is not the expected normal arrangement, is called as situs ambiguous or heterotaxy syndrome. Patients with heterotaxy syndrome exhibit a wide spectrum of anatomical variations involving thoraco-abdominal structures. We present here an incidental finding of heterotaxy syndrome associated with unique vascular anomalies in a 35 year old male patient evaluated initially for nephrolithiasis by ultrasonography, and intravenous pyelography. Further evaluation by multidetector row computed tomography

The Alagille syndrome (AGS) or arteriohepatic dysplasia is a rare, autosomal dominant inherited disease with a prevalence of approximately 1:100,000. AGS was first described in 1969 and affects liver, heart, arterial blood vessels, skeleton and the eyes. The expression of AGS is variable. In severe cases a liver transplantation is required. Presented is the case of a 25-year-old woman with AGS. At the age of 7 and 8years she had liver transplantations. Other typical findings associated with Alagille syndrome (e.g. pulmonary or renal anomalies) were also present. The young woman apparently died

BACKGROUND: Crossed fused renal ectopia and other similar renal anomalies are nearly always associated with major renal arterial, venous, and collecting system anomalies. These complicate both open repair and endovascular repair (EVAR) of abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA). We present a case of successful EVAR of an AAA with crossed fused renal ectopia.
PATIENT DESCRIPTION: A 76-year-old man was followed with an AAA and was also noted to have crossed fused renal ectopia. The aneurysm increased in diameter to 5.5 cm, and repair was recommended. Anatomy appeared challenging for open repair but al

VACTERL is a cluster of congenital malformations based on the non-random association of various congenital malformations in a single patient. Here "V" denotes vertebral defects or vascular anomalies (single umbilical artery), "A" anal atresia, "C" cardiac abnormalities, "TE" tracheoesophageal fistula, "R"renal (kidney) abnormalities and "L" for limb anomalies) It is called an association, rather than a syndrome because the complications are not pathogenetically related, tend to occur more frequently than expected and are thought to be linked to embryonic mesodermal defects. Studies have report

In the evaluation of renal vessels, the accepted diagnostic gold standard digital subtraction angiography is now being challenged by state of the art CT and MR imaging. Currently in many centers, cross-sectional imaging modalities are being used as a first line diagnostic tool to evaluate arterial and venous system of the kidneys and conventional angiography has been reserved only for therapeutic intervention. CT and MR imaging display not only the lumen of the vessel as in conventional angiography, but also allow the visualization of the vessel wall, renal parenchyma, collecting system, and o

The association between encephalocele and radial defects is considered uncommon. These features have been occasionally described separately in certain recurrent conditions such as VACTERL association, oculo-auriculo-vertebral spectrum and Edwards syndrome (trisomy 18). DK-phocomelia is a rare syndrome characterized by both findings. However, Froster-Iskenius and Meinecke [1992, Clin Dysmorphol 1: 37-41] and Kunze et al. [1992, Eur J Pediatr 151: 467-468] reported patients presenting similar malformations. We proposed, through the description of an additional case, that these last patients pres
