Guillain-Barré syndrome following falciparum malaria infection: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Malaria is an infectious disease caused by Plasmodium parasites, transmitted to humans by infected female Anopheles mosquitoes. Five Plasmodium species infect humans: P. vivax, P. falciparum, P. ovale, P. malariae, and P. knowlesi. Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) is an inflammatory condition that can lead to paralysis, autonomic dysfunction, respiratory failure, and sensory symptoms. GBS typically follows an infection with Campylobacter bacteria, commonly found in undercooked poultry, but is rarely associated with malaria. CLINICAL PRESENTATION: A 16-year-old female patient presente

Current update on malaria in pregnancy: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Malaria during pregnancy poses significant risks to both the mother and the developing fetus. For pregnant women, the infection can result in severe illness and even death. Parasite sequestration in the placenta can cause maternal anemia and increase the risk of mortality both during and after childbirth. Malaria is also a major contributor to stillbirths and preterm births. Infected placental tissue can impede fetal growth, resulting in low birth weight, which is linked to delayed growth and cognitive development in the child. Furthermore, malaria during pregnancy remains a major

Plasmodium malariae after successful treatment of P. falciparum malaria with artemether-lumefantrine.

We described a case of Plasmodium malariae malaria in a traveler returning from the Democratic Republic of Congo to Belgium. This occurred despite successful artemether-lumefantrine treatment for Plasmodium falciparum three weeks earlier and in the absence of re-exposure in an endemic area. We discuss possible explanations for this unusual observation.

Challenges in the diagnosis and treatment of malaria in Polish workers returning from Africa: a case series and review of literature.

Malaria is a parasitic disease caused in humans by five species of Plasmodium: P. falciparum, P. vivax, P. malariae, P. ovale, and P. knowlesi and transmitted through a female mosquito bite. In 2020, there were 241 million cases of malaria worldwide including 627,000 deaths. Traveling to malaria endemic areas is a significant risk factor, therefore, it is very important to use non-specific and pharmacological prophylaxis. Malaria symptoms usually appear 10-14 days after infection and the disease may be suspected, based on patient examination and medical history, in patients with fever who have

Co-infection of the four major Plasmodium species: Effects on densities and gametocyte carriage.

BACKGROUND: Co-infection of the four major species of human malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum (Pf), P. vivax (Pv), P. malariae (Pm), and P. ovale sp. (Po) is regularly observed, but there is limited understanding of between-species interactions. In particular, little is known about the effects of multiple Plasmodium species co-infections on gametocyte production. METHODS: We developed molecular assays for detecting asexual and gametocyte stages of Pf, Pv, Pm, and Po. This is the first description of molecular diagnostics for Pm and Po gametocytes. These assays were implemented in a uniqu

The first complete genome of the simian malaria parasite Plasmodium brasilianum.

Naturally occurring human infections by zoonotic Plasmodium species have been documented for P. knowlesi, P. cynomolgi, P. simium, P. simiovale, P. inui, P. inui-like, P. coatneyi, and P. brasilianum. Accurate detection of each species is complicated by their morphological similarities with other Plasmodium species. PCR-based assays offer a solution but require prior knowledge of adequate genomic targets that can distinguish the species. While whole genomes have been published for P. knowlesi, P. cynomolgi, P. simium, and P. inui, no complete genome for P. brasilianum has been available. Previ

Global trend of Plasmodium malariae and Plasmodium ovale spp. malaria infections in the last two decades (2000-2020): a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Recent studies indicate that the prevalence of non-falciparum malaria, including Plasmodium malariae and Plasmodium ovale spp., is increasing, with some complications in infected individuals. The aim of this review is to provide a better understanding of the malaria prevalence and disease burden due to P. malariae and P. ovale spp. METHODS: The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines and the Joanna Briggs Institute prevalence study assessment tool were used to select and evaluate the studies, respectively. Six databases: PubMed, WHOLI

Travel Health Implications for Women Traveling Abroad.

International travel is increasing each year, and many travelers are female. Travel-related health risks include diseases, accidents, and other safety concerns. Whether traveling for business or pleasure, women should practice appropriate measures that minimize the impact travel can have on their health and well-being. Female travelers can have unique health risks related to pregnancy, lactation, and infectious disease. A large part of pretravel health preparation is often performed by nurses and should include a comprehensive health risk assessment, education, and vaccinations, all of which c

Where have all the parasites gone? Unusual Plasmodium falciparum monoparasitaemia in a cross-sectional malariometric survey in northern Nigeria.

Background: Malaria is caused by one of five currently known Plasmodium parasite species causing disease in humans. While modelling has provided information of the vector, the same is not entirely the case for the parasite. The World Malaria reports of 2014 to 2016 reported 100% of confirmed cases from Nigeria being due to Plasmodium falciparum. Generally, about 98% of cases of uncomplicated malaria in most regions surveyed in Nigeria recently is due to P. falciparum, with the remainder being due to P. malariae. This study aimed to determine the proportions of Plasmodium parasites causing unco

Malaria, Collapsing Glomerulopathy, and Focal and Segmental Glomerulosclerosis.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Malaria, a potentially life-threatening disease, is the most prevalent endemic infectious disease worldwide. In the modern era, the spectrum of glomerular involvement observed in patients after malarial infections remains poorly described. DESIGN, SETTING, PARTICIPANTS, & MEASUREMENTS: We therefore performed a retrospective multicenter study to assess the clinical, biologic, pathologic, and therapeutic characteristics of patients with glomerular disease demonstrated by kidney biopsy in France within 3 months of an acute malaria episode. RESULTS: We identified 23 pa

Pyronaridine-artesunate or dihydroartemisinin-piperaquine versus current first-line therapies for repeated treatment of uncomplicated malaria: a randomised, multicentre, open-label, longitudinal, controlled, phase 3b/4 trial.

BACKGROUND: Artemether-lumefantrine and artesunate-amodiaquine are used as first-line artemisinin-based combination therapies (ACTs) in west Africa. Pyronaridine-artesunate and dihydroartemisinin-piperaquine are potentially useful for diversification of ACTs in this region, but further safety and efficacy data are required on malaria retreatment. METHODS: We did a randomised, multicentre, open-label, longitudinal, controlled phase 3b/4 clinical trial at seven tertiary centres in Burkina Faso, Guinea, and Mali. Eligible participants for first malaria episode and all retreatment episodes were a

A systematic review of transfusion-transmitted malaria in non-endemic areas.

BACKGROUND: Transfusion-transmitted malaria (TTM) is an accidental Plasmodium infection caused by whole blood or a blood component transfusion from a malaria infected donor to a recipient. Infected blood transfusions directly release malaria parasites in the recipient's bloodstream triggering the development of high risk complications, and potentially leading to a fatal outcome especially in individuals with no previous exposure to malaria or in immuno-compromised patients. A systematic review was conducted on TTM case reports in non-endemic areas to describe the epidemiological characteristic

Submicroscopic placental infection by non-falciparum Plasmodium spp.

BACKGROUND: Among the Plasmodium species that infect humans, adverse effects of P. falciparum and P. vivax have been extensively studied and reported with respect to poor outcomes particularly in first time mothers and in pregnant women living in areas with unstable malaria transmission. Although, other non-falciparum malaria infections during pregnancy have sometimes been reported, little is known about the dynamics of these infections during pregnancy. METHODS AND FINDINGS: Using a quantitative PCR approach, blood samples collected from Beninese pregnant women during the first antenatal vis

Evaluation of the utility value of three diagnostic methods in the detection of malaria parasites in endemic area.

BACKGROUND: Malaria is a debilitating disease with high morbidity and mortality in Africa, commonly caused by different species of the genus Plasmodium in humans. Misdiagnosis is a major challenge in endemic areas because of other disease complications and technical expertise of the medical laboratory staff. Microscopic method using Giemsa-stained blood film has been the mainstay of diagnosis of malaria. However, since 1993 when rapid diagnostic test (RDT) kits were introduced, they have proved to be effective in the diagnosis of malaria. This study was aimed at comparing the accuracy of micro

Cryptic Plasmodium ovale concurrent with mixed Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmodium malariae infection in two children from Central African Republic.

BACKGROUND: Since several malaria parasite species are usually present in a particular area, co-infections with more than one species of Plasmodium are more likely to occur in humans infected in these areas. In many mixed infections, parasite densities of the cryptic species may be low and often not recognized in clinical practice. CASE PRESENTATION: Two children (3 and 6 years old) adopted recently from Central African Republic were admitted to hospital because of intermittent fever. Thin blood smears stained with Giemsa showed Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmodium malariae co-infection for b

Demography, maternal health and the epidemiology of malaria and other major infectious diseases in the rural department Tsamba-Magotsi, Ngounie Province, in central African Gabon.

BACKGROUND: Sub-Saharan Africa is undergoing an epidemiological transition from a predominance of infectious diseases to non-communicable and lifestyle related conditions. However, the pace of this transition and the pattern of disease epidemiology are uneven between affluent urban and rural poor populations. To address this question for a remote rural region located in the central African rainforest region of Gabon, this study was conducted to assess reasons for health care attendance and to characterize the epidemiology of malaria and other major infectious diseases for the department of Tsa

[Malaria in Iceland, a rare but looming threat for travelers].

INTRODUCTION: Malaria is one of the most common causes of preventable deaths in the developing countries, especially among children. A previous study of imported malaria in Iceland during 1980-1997 identified 15 confirmed cases. The objective of this retrospective study was to update epidemiological data on malaria in Iceland, 1998-2014. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The inclusion criteria were a positive thick or thin blood smear for malaria parasites at the Dept. of Microbiology at Landspitali University Hospital, which serves as a referral laboratory for malaria diagnosis in the country. UK malaria treatment guidelines 2016.

1.Malaria is the tropical disease most commonly imported into the UK, with 1300-1800 cases reported each year, and 2-11 deaths. 2. Approximately three quarters of reported malaria cases in the UK are caused by Plasmodium falciparum, which is capable of invading a high proportion of red blood cells and rapidly leading to severe or life-threatening multi-organ disease. 3. Most non-falciparum malaria cases are caused by Plasmodium vivax; a few cases are caused by the other species of plasmodium: Plasmodium ovale, Plasmodium malariae or Plasmodium knowlesi. 4. Mixed infections with more than one s

Plasmodium malariae Infection Associated with a High Burden of Anemia: A Hospital-Based Surveillance Study.

BACKGROUND: Plasmodium malariae is a slow-growing parasite with a wide geographic distribution. Although generally regarded as a benign cause of malaria, it has been associated with nephrotic syndrome, particularly in young children, and can persist in the host for years. Morbidity associated with P. malariae infection has received relatively little attention, and the risk of P. malariae-associated nephrotic syndrome is unknown. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We used data from a very large hospital-based surveillance system incorporating information on clinical diagnoses, blood cell paramete

A 20-year longitudinal study of Plasmodium ovale and Plasmodium malariae prevalence and morbidity in a West African population.

BACKGROUND: Plasmodium ovale and Plasmodium malariae have long been reported to be widely distributed in tropical Africa and in other major malaria-endemic areas of the world. However, little is known about the burden caused by these two malaria species. METHODS AND FINDINGS: We did a longitudinal study of the inhabitants of Dielmo village, Senegal, between June, 1990, and December, 2010. We monitored the inhabitants for fever during this period and performed quarterly measurements of parasitemia. We analyzed parasitological and clinical data in a random-effect logistic regression model to in
