BACKGROUND: Stillbirth and neonatal mortality declined significantly in high- and some middle-income countries since 2000 because of the significant improvements in obstetric and neonatal care. Yet, stillbirth and neonatal mortality rates remain high in many low- and middle-income countries. The main reason for low progress in reducing such stillbirths and neonatal deaths in Jordan is the scarcity of data on causes and contributing factors leading to these deaths. This study aimed to determine the rates, causes, and risk factors of stillbirth and neonatal mortality in Jordan.

Cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD) plays a significant role in the development of lacunar strokes and is closely associated with cognitive decline, gait disturbances, and vascular dementia. This systematic review explores the pathophysiology and management of CSVD, with a focus on its contribution to stroke recurrence and patient outcomes. Key findings indicate that structural cardiac abnormalities, inflammatory markers, and metabolic disorders are critical predictors of stroke risk in individuals with CSVD. Structural changes in the heart, such as altered left ventricular geometry, are link

BACKGROUND: Timing of pulmonary valve intervention (PVI) for pulmonary regurgitation in patients with repaired tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) is guided by right ventricle (RV) volumetric/function assessment on cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) indexed to actual body surface area (BSA). However, different RV contouring techniques and BSA formulae exist with significant variability in reported measurements. We aimed to review the protocols reported in CMR studies of PVI in TOF.
METHODS: A search of electronic databases (Embase and MEDLINE) was performed to identify studies published between February

Chronic hypertension often leads to cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD), a condition marked by cumulative damage to the small arteries and arterioles within the brain. Radiologically, CSVD is associated with white matter hyperintensities, lacunar infarcts, and cerebral microbleeds. Clinically, it often presents with cognitive dysfunction, gait abnormalities, and an elevated risk of stroke. Histopathological changes in CSVD due to hypertension include thickening of arteriolar walls, breakdown of the blood-brain barrier, and chronic cerebral ischemia. CSVD is commonly seen in patients with long

Spontaneous coronary artery dissection (SCAD) is increasingly recognized as a cause of acute coronary syndrome and has been associated with extracoronary arteriopathies, such as fibromuscular dysplasia (FMD), aneurysms, and dissections across other vascular beds. However, these associations remain understudied in the literature. This study aims to characterize the prevalence and distribution of extracoronary arteriopathies in a large cohort of SCAD patients. Patients diagnosed with SCAD were extracted from 2018 to 2024. Baseline characteristics and comorbidities were collected. Available vascu

OBJECTIVES: Pulmonary arteriovenous malformation (pAVM) is an anatomical intrapulmonary left-to-right vascular shunt, and it may be a cause of paradoxical stroke. However, the risk of stroke associated with pAVMs is unknown. In this study, we seek to quantify the risk of stroke recurrence among cryptogenic stroke (CS) patients with pAVM compared with those with patent foramen ovale (PFO).
METHODS: This was a retrospective analysis of the 2016-2022 Nationwide Readmissions Database. Patients with acute ischemic stroke were identified, and those with embolic, thrombotic, lacunar, or other specif

OBJECTIVES: Kawasaki syndrome (KS) is an acute systemic vasculitis of unknown origin predominantly affecting young children. Early diagnosis is crucial to prevent cardiac complications. However, the differential diagnosis of patients with the incomplete or atypical form of the disease poses a heavy challenge for the paediatrician. Our aim was to evaluate the prevalence of incomplete and atypical cases among children with KS and to identify clinical and laboratory variables that may help differentiate incomplete and atypical KS from other febrile diseases at this age.

Persistent postural-perceptual dizziness (PPPD) is characterized by one or more symptoms of dizziness, unsteadiness, or non-spinning vertigo, which persist on most days for at least 3 months. The most common symptom of PPPD worsens when standing or walking, often leading to confusion with other forms of orthostatic dizziness (OD). There are some main differential diagnosis as follows: hemodynamic OD, postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome, vestibular syncope, BPPV, bilateral vestibulopathy, primary orthostatic tremor, sensory neuropathy, neurodegenerative disorders, cerebral small vessel di

Immunoglobulin A vasculitis (IgAV) is a systemic inflammatory disease that affects small blood vessels. Central nervous system (CNS) involvement in IgAV is rare. This study analyzed the clinical characteristics of IgAV patients combined with CNS damage in children. Furthermore, the study made a comparison between the characteristics of IgAV patients with and without CNS damage, and initially explored the potential predictors for IgAV patients with CNS damage. A retrospective analysis was conducted on a cohort of 50 children diagnosed with IgAV and admitted to Beijing Children's Hospital from 2

Collagen IV is a basement membrane component that is encoded by six genes in mammals (COL4Α1-COL4A6). The α-chains encoded by these genes assemble into three known heterotrimers - collagen α1α1α2(IV), α3α4α5(IV) and α5α5α6(IV) - that provide structure and act as multifunctional signalling platforms. The ancestral collagen superfamily members collagen alpha-1(IV) chain (COL4Α1) and collagen alpha-2(IV) chain (COL4Α2) are present throughout the animal kingdom and in all developing and most mature mammalian tissues. Consistent with this broad distribution, variants in COL4A1 and COL4A2 cause a co

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The Artery of Percheron (AoP) supplying bilateral paramedian thalami and rostral midbrain is a rare anatomical variant. In the event of occlusion of AoP, a characteristic pattern of ischaemia is seen, presenting as bithalamic signal abnormality on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). However, this particular imaging finding has significant radiological and clinical overlap with other conditions, necessitating a comprehensive understanding of the imaging characteristics and potential differential diagnosis. The aim of this pictorial essay is to provide a visual documentatio

BACKGROUND: Brain arteriovenous malformations (bAVMs) are a major risk factor for intracerebral hemorrhages in young patients. Recent clinical studies have reported that the majority of human bAVMs harbor somatic KRAS (Kirsten rat sarcoma viral oncogene homolog) mutations. In our previous study, we confirmed the causal role of endothelial KRASG12V mutation in bAVM development in mice through hyperactivation of the MEK/ERK (mitogen-activated protein kinase kinase/extracellular signal-regulated kinase) pathway. However, the treatment efficacy of targeting MEK/ERK signaling in bAVMs, regarding cl

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Definitive diagnosis of multiple sclerosis (MS) requires exclusion of other central nervous system (CNS) disorders sharing similar clinical, pathological and radiological features. In this review we discuss some relatively uncommon disorders with special emphasis on their differentiation from MS clinically and radiologically. While most conditions have a demyelinating pathology, a few very important mimics may have a non-demyelinating pathology to merit some discussion.
RECENT FINDINGS: Two major areas of diagnostic advances have been made in recent times, the recognition o

BACKGROUND: Early detection of intracranial aneurysms (IAs) is crucial for patient outcomes. Typically identified on angiographic scans such as CT angiography (CTA) or MR angiography (MRA), the sensitivity of experts in studies on small IAs (diameter <3 mm) was moderate (64-74.1% for CTAs and 70-92.8% for MRAs), and these figures could be lower in a routine clinical setting. Recent research shows that the expert level of sensitivity might be achieved using deep learning approaches.
METHODS: A large multisite dataset including 1054 MRA and 2174 CTA scans with expert IA annotations was collecte
