High variability in reporting of right ventricle contouring technique and body surface area methodology in cardiac magnetic resonance studies of patients with repaired tetralogy of Fallot: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Timing of pulmonary valve intervention (PVI) for pulmonary regurgitation in patients with repaired tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) is guided by right ventricle (RV) volumetric/function assessment on cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) indexed to actual body surface area (BSA). However, different RV contouring techniques and BSA formulae exist with significant variability in reported measurements. We aimed to review the protocols reported in CMR studies of PVI in TOF. METHODS: A search of electronic databases (Embase and MEDLINE) was performed to identify studies published between February

Risk of Recurrent Stroke Among Patients With Patent Foramen Ovale vs Pulmonary Arteriovenous Malformation: A Nationwide Study.

OBJECTIVES: Pulmonary arteriovenous malformation (pAVM) is an anatomical intrapulmonary left-to-right vascular shunt, and it may be a cause of paradoxical stroke. However, the risk of stroke associated with pAVMs is unknown. In this study, we seek to quantify the risk of stroke recurrence among cryptogenic stroke (CS) patients with pAVM compared with those with patent foramen ovale (PFO). METHODS: This was a retrospective analysis of the 2016-2022 Nationwide Readmissions Database. Patients with acute ischemic stroke were identified, and those with embolic, thrombotic, lacunar, or other specif

Elabela relaxes rat pulmonary artery and trachea via BKCa, KV, and KATP channels.

OBJECTIVE: Elabela is a newly discovered peptide hormone. This study aimed to determine the functional effects and mechanisms of action of elabela in rat pulmonary artery and trachea. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Vascular rings isolated from the pulmonary arteries of male Wistar Albino rats were placed in chambers in the isolated tissue bath system. The resting tension was set to 1 g. After the equilibration period, the pulmonary artery rings were contracted with 10-6 M phenylephrine. Once a stable contraction was achieved, elabela was applied cumulatively (10-10-10-6 M) to the vascular rings. To d

Microvascular decompression for trigeminal neuralgia caused by persistent trigeminal artery associated with craniosynostosis: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Persistent trigeminal artery (PTA) is a rare arterial anastomosis between the basilar artery (BA) and internal carotid artery (ICA). It plays an indispensable role in a number of neurological disorders, including trigeminal neuralgia (TN). CASE PRESENTATION: We report a unique case of a 58-year-old Han female patient with TN caused by PTA associated with craniosynostosis. Preoperative three-dimensional time-of-flight (3D-TOF) magnetic resonance (MR) and 3D constructive inference in steady state (3D-CISS) imaging showed that the PTA run though Meckel's cave. Reductions in brain pericytes are associated with arteriovenous malformation vascular instability.

OBJECTIVEBrain arteriovenous malformations (bAVMs) are rupture-prone tangles of blood vessels with direct shunting of blood flow between arterial and venous circulations. The molecular and/or cellular mechanisms contributing to bAVM pathogenesis and/or destabilization in sporadic lesions have remained elusive. Initial insights into AVM formation have been gained through models of genetic AVM syndromes. And while many studies have focused on endothelial cells, the contributions of other vascular cell types have yet to be systematically studied. Pericytes are multifunctional mural cells that reg

Rac1 modulates cardiomyocyte adhesion during mouse embryonic development.

Rac1, a member of the Rho subfamily of small GTPases, is involved in morphogenesis and differentiation of many cell types. Here we define a role of Rac1 in cardiac development by specifically deleting Rac1 in the pre-cardiac mesoderm using the Nkx2.5-Cre transgenic driver line. Rac1-conditional knockout embryos initiate heart development normally until embryonic day 11.5 (E11.5); their cardiac mesoderm is specified, and the heart tube is formed and looped. However, by E12.5-E13.5 the mutant hearts start failing and embryos develop edema and hemorrhage which is probably the cause for the lethal

Heterogeneity of oral clefts in relation to associated congenital anomalies.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The first step in the search for the genetic basis of oral clefts should be the well-accepted classification and clinical data protocols, which are important in distinguishing separate phenotypic groups. The aim of this study was to compare the frequency of congenital malformations associated with oral clefts between the different groups of oral clefts. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study population comprised 238 patients with oral clefts and one or more major congenital anomalies. All cases of oral clefts were subdivided into 2 groups: patients with the recognized condi

Defining candidate drug characteristics for Long-QT (LQT3) syndrome.

Mutations of the SCN5A gene can significantly alter the function of cardiac myocyte sodium channels leading to increased risk of ventricular arrhythmia. Over the past decade, detailed Markov models of the action potential of cardiac cells have been developed. In such models, the effects of a drug can be treated as alterations in on- and off rates between open and inactivated states on one hand, and blocked states on the other hand. Our aim is to compute the rates specifying a drug in order to: (a) restore the steady-state open probability of the mutant channel to that of normal wild type chann

Pseudoxanthoma elasticum: case report with arterial stiffness evaluated by a research cardiovascular profiling system.

Pseudoxanthoma elasticum (PXE) is an inherited systemic disorder characterized by calcification of elastic tissue, affecting the skin, the eyes and vascular system. The aim of our study was to specify the cardiovascular changes in a case of pseudoxanthoma elasticum by a non-invasive haemodynamic evaluation. We present a 50-year-old woman with a clinical diagnosis of pseudoxanthoma elasticum. Except for hypertension, treated over the past four years, there was no other modifiable cardiovascular risk factor. The patient had a familiar history of early cardiovascular death. In the physical examin

National time trends in congenital heart defects, Denmark, 1977-2005.

BACKGROUND: Time trends in congenital heart defects (CHD) by specific phenotype and with long follow-up time are rarely available for an entire population. We present trends in national CHD prevalences over the past 3 decades. METHODS: We linked information from the National Patient Register, the Causes of Death Register, and the Danish Cytogenetic Central Register for all persons born in Denmark, 1977 to 2005, and registered in the Civil Registration System, yielding a cohort of 1,763,591 persons-18,207 with CHD. Individuals with CHDs were classified by phenotype (heterotaxia, conotruncal de

Fgf8 is required for anterior heart field development.

In the mouse embryo, the splanchnic mesodermal cells of the anterior heart field (AHF) migrate from the pharynx to contribute to the early myocardium of the outflow tract (OT) and right ventricle (RV). Recent studies have attempted to distinguish the AHF from other precardiac populations, and to determine the genetic and molecular mechanisms that regulate its development. Here, we have used an Fgf8lacZ allele to demonstrate that Fgf8 is expressed within the developing AHF. In addition, we use both a hypomorphic Fgf8 allele (Fgf8neo) and Cre-mediated gene ablation to show that Fgf8 is essential

Assessing the likelihood of an important clinical outcome: new insights from a comparison of clinical and actuarial judgment.

PURPOSE: To assess and rank the performance of different methods of predicting the probability of death following a specified surgical procedure. METHOD: Actuarial estimates of the probability of early mortality for 40 patients were derived from 2 sources: a large published surgical series and a smaller series from the center where surgery was performed. Surgeons and cardiologists also provided probability estimates for these patients. RESULTS: Estimates derived from the published literature were too optimistic and did not differentiate between patients more, or less, likely to die (i.e., fa

Notch function in the vasculature: insights from zebrafish, mouse and man.

Vascular development entails multiple cell-fate decisions to specify a diverse array of vascular structures. Notch proteins are signaling receptors that regulate cell-fate determination in a variety of cell types. The finding that Notch genes are robustly expressed in the vasculature suggests roles for Notch in guiding endothelial and associated mural cells through the myriad of cell-fate decisions needed to form the vasculature. In fact, mice with defects in genes encoding Notch, Notch ligands, and components of the Notch signaling cascade invariably display vascular defects. Human Notch gene
