BACKGROUND: Stillbirth and neonatal mortality declined significantly in high- and some middle-income countries since 2000 because of the significant improvements in obstetric and neonatal care. Yet, stillbirth and neonatal mortality rates remain high in many low- and middle-income countries. The main reason for low progress in reducing such stillbirths and neonatal deaths in Jordan is the scarcity of data on causes and contributing factors leading to these deaths. This study aimed to determine the rates, causes, and risk factors of stillbirth and neonatal mortality in Jordan.

Background Heart failure constitutes significant morbidity and mortality among the pediatric population. Few data exist on the prevalence and mortality rate of pediatric heart failure (pHF) in the United States. Objectives This study aimed to determine the in-hospital mortality and the principal diagnoses in pediatric patients with heart failure who died while being hospitalized in the United States. Methods This is a retrospective cross-sectional study using data from the 2019 Kid Inpatient Database (KID). The KID contained data on hospitalized children below 21 years of age. Using Stata 17 s

Deletions involving the distal portion of the short arm of chromosome 8(8p23.1) show a high phenotypic variability. Congenital heart diseases (CHD) are often described. GATA4 when mutated or deleted is reported to be involved in cardiac morphogenesis. Only twice, left ventricular non compaction (LVNC) was reported in literature in association with 8p23.1 deletion. The present cohort includes five new patients with 8p23.1 deletions including GATA4. The spectrum of CHD is variable. Moreover, in four patients, LV hypertrabeculation was detected and in the fifth LVNC was recognized. Literature rev

Persistent left superior vena cava is the most common congenital anomaly of thoracic venous return, which results when the left anterior cardinal vein fails to regress. A 41-year-old African American male with a history of an unspecified childhood cardiac murmur presented to the emergency department with congestive heart failure exacerbation revealing an incidental finding of a persistent left superior vena cava. Ultimately, he required implantable cardioverter defibrillator placement and cardiac transplantation assessment. In the setting of advanced device placement or cardiac transplantation

BACKGROUND: Birth defects are defined as structural and functional defects that develop during the organogenesis period and present at birth or detected later in life. They are one of the leading causes of infant and child mortality, morbidity, and long term disability. The magnitude of birth defects varies from country to country and from race/ethnicity to race/ethnicity, and about 40-60% of their causes are unknown. The known causes of birth defects are genetic and environmental factors which may be prevented. For various reasons, there is lack of data and research on birth defects in Ethiop

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The efficacy of cerebrospinal fluid shunting to reduce intracranial hypertension and prevent fatal brain herniation in acute cerebral venous thrombosis (CVT) is unknown.
METHOD: From the International Study on Cerebral Vein and Dural Sinus Thrombosis (ISCVT) and a systematic literature review, we retrieved acute CVT patients treated only with shunting (external ventricular drain, ventriculoperitoneal or ventriculojugular shunt). Outcome was classified at 6 months and final follow-up by the modified Rankin Scale (mRS).
RESULTS: 15 patients were collected (9 from the IS

BACKGROUND: Ehlers-Danlos syndrome is a group of inherited connective tissue diseases demonstrating autosomal-dominant, autosomal-recessive, and X-linked inheritance patterns. The diagnosis can be established by clinical, biochemical, and genetic findings.
CASE: Our nulliparous patient presented with an unspecified diagnosis of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome. Laboratory testing confirmed the kyphoscoliotic type. Based on clinical and phenotypic similarities with the vascular type of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, termination was advised. Minor trauma in the third trimester led to delivery of a stillborn fet

BACKGROUND: Time trends in congenital heart defects (CHD) by specific phenotype and with long follow-up time are rarely available for an entire population. We present trends in national CHD prevalences over the past 3 decades.
METHODS: We linked information from the National Patient Register, the Causes of Death Register, and the Danish Cytogenetic Central Register for all persons born in Denmark, 1977 to 2005, and registered in the Civil Registration System, yielding a cohort of 1,763,591 persons-18,207 with CHD. Individuals with CHDs were classified by phenotype (heterotaxia, conotruncal de

The etiology of gastroschisis and omphalocele is unclear and their pathogenesis is controversial. Because previous reports have inconsistently noted the type and frequency of malformations associated with omphalocele and gastroschisis, we assessed these associated malformations ascertained between 1979 and 2003 in 334,262 consecutive births. Of the 86 patients with omphalocele, 64 (74.4%) had associated malformations. These included patients with chromosomal abnormalities (25, 29.0%); non-chromosomal syndromes including Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome, Goltz syndrome, Marshall-Smith syndrome, Meck

A 53-year-old woman with a history of hypertension was referred for an echocardiogram by her primary care physician after an unspecified abnormal ECG. The echocardiogram showed normal left ventricular size and function; however, an isolated cleft posterior mitral valve leaflet was identified with concomitant bileaflet prolapse and mild mitral regurgitation. She was subsequently referred to a cardiologist for clinical evaluation. Cleft mitral valve leaflet (CMVL) is an uncommon congenital cause of mitral regurgitation. Clefts, defined as slit-like holes or defects, are hypothesized to be a resu

The authors conducted a case-control study in Comunidad Valenciana, Spain, to assess the relation between occupational exposure to pesticides, mainly as a result of agricultural work, and the prevalence of congenital malformations. A total of 261 cases and 261 controls were selected from those infants born in eight public hospitals during 1993-1994. The cases were those who were diagnosed with selected defects (nervous system, cardiovascular, oral clefts, hypospadias/epispadias, musculoskeletal, and unspecified anomalies) during their first year of life. Information on occupational exposures a

OBJECTIVE: Although cardiovascular malformations (CVMs) are well-recognized congenital anomalies in Turner syndrome, aortic dilation and dissection are less common and less familiar. Most of the relevant literature is limited to single cases reports or small series. We sought to increase the information available about the frequency and characteristics of aortic dilation in patients with Turner syndrome.
DESIGN: A 1-page survey of cardiac abnormalities, including aortic dilation, was mailed to approximately 1000 (1040 verified) members of the Turner Syndrome Society as an enclosure in the Jun

It is apparent that there are many unanswered questions about the pathogenesis of CRS. For instance, the chance of embryonic infection decreases in the second semester only to increase again in the third trimester. This is presumably due to unspecified changes in the placenta. When the embryo is infected early in the first trimester it does not appear to have any conventional immunological response to prevent spread of the virus. Yet it has been suggested that only 1 in 10(3) to 10(5) of its cells become infected. If this is true, what controls the spread of the virus in the early embryo? Why
