OBJECTIVE: Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a frequent presentation in malaria infections. Several cases of AKI that are accompanied by clinical symptoms of malaria infection, such as fever, nausea, respiratory distress, and anemia remain undiagnosed due to challenges in accurate diagnosis using peripheral blood microscopy and rapid diagnostic tests that are currently used in clinical settings. This is particularly true for P. vivax and P. knowlesi infections. As a result, these patients are not able to receive anti-malarial therapy in a timely manner. The objective of the present study was to inv

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Malaria, a potentially life-threatening disease, is the most prevalent endemic infectious disease worldwide. In the modern era, the spectrum of glomerular involvement observed in patients after malarial infections remains poorly described.
DESIGN, SETTING, PARTICIPANTS, & MEASUREMENTS: We therefore performed a retrospective multicenter study to assess the clinical, biologic, pathologic, and therapeutic characteristics of patients with glomerular disease demonstrated by kidney biopsy in France within 3 months of an acute malaria episode.
RESULTS: We identified 23 pa

The epidemiology of febrile illness etiologies is under-explored in resource-poor settings. Establishing a local repertory of microorganisms circulating in blood of febrile and afebrile people is important for physicians. Blood was collected from 428 febrile and 88 afebrile children in Makokou (Gabon) and analyzed using polymerase chain reaction. Plasmodium spp. were the pathogens, which were most detected in febrile children (69.6%; 298/428) and in afebrile children (31.8%; 28/88) (P < 0.0001). Plasmodium falciparum was the most prevalent species in both febrile and afebrile children (66.8% a

Current malaria rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) contain antibodies against Plasmodium falciparum-specific histidine-rich protein 2 (PfHRP2), Plasmodium lactate dehydrogenase (pLDH), and aldolase in various combinations. Low or high parasite densities/target antigen concentrations may influence the accuracy and sensitivity of PfHRP2-detecting RDTs. We analyzed the SD Bioline Malaria Ag P.f/Pan RDT performance in relation to P. falciparum parasitemia in Madagascar, where clinical Plasmodium vivax malaria exists alongside P. falciparum. Nine hundred sixty-three samples from patients seeking care fo

BACKGROUND: Anemia is a major complication of vivax malaria. Antiphosphatidylserine (PS) antibodies generated during falciparum malaria mediate phagocytosis of uninfected red blood cells that expose PS and have been linked to late malarial anemia. However, their role in anemia from non-falciparum Plasmodium species is not known, nor their role in early anemia from falciparum malaria.
METHODS: We measured PS immunoglobulin G (IgG) and immunoglobulin M (IgM) antibodies in Malaysian patients with vivax, falciparum, knowlesi, and malariae malaria, and in healthy controls, and correlated antibody

Plasmodium knowlesi is now regarded as the fifth malaria parasite causing human malaria as it is widely distributed in South-East Asian countries especially east Malaysia where two Malaysian states namely Sabah and Sarawak are situated. In 2004, Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) was applied for diagnosing knowlesi malaria in the Kapit Division of Sarawak, Malaysia, so that human P. knowlesi infections could be detected correctly while blood film microscopy diagnosed incorrectly as Plasmodium malariae. This parasite is transmitted from simian hosts to humans via Anopheles vectors. Indonesia is th

To study the epidemiological distribution and the incident trends of imported malaria from 2012 to 2016 in Zhejiang Province, southeastern China, we collected data on malaria from the Information System for Parasitic Disease Control and Prevention. A total of 1,003 malaria cases were reported during 2012-2016, and all of these cases were imported. Plasmodium falciparum was the predominant species (76.3%) in Zhejiang Province. The percentage of Plasmodium vivax decreased from 33.6% to 8.1%, whereas the percentage of Plasmodium ovale and Plasmodium malariae increased. Most cases were male (89.8%

BACKGROUND: Artemether-lumefantrine and artesunate-amodiaquine are used as first-line artemisinin-based combination therapies (ACTs) in west Africa. Pyronaridine-artesunate and dihydroartemisinin-piperaquine are potentially useful for diversification of ACTs in this region, but further safety and efficacy data are required on malaria retreatment.
METHODS: We did a randomised, multicentre, open-label, longitudinal, controlled phase 3b/4 clinical trial at seven tertiary centres in Burkina Faso, Guinea, and Mali. Eligible participants for first malaria episode and all retreatment episodes were a

Malaria, caused by the protozoan parasites of the genus Plasmodium, is a major health problem in many countries of the world. Five parasite species namely, Plasmodium falciparum, P. vivax, P. malariae, P. ovale, and P. knowlesi, cause malaria in humans. Of these, P. falciparum and P. vivax are the most prevalent and account for the majority of the global malaria cases. In most areas of Africa, P. vivax infection is essentially absent because of the inherited lack of Duffy antigen receptor for chemokines on the surface of red blood cells that is involved in the parasite invasion of erythrocytes

Skeletal muscle is known to be damaged by falciparum malaria via sequestration of infected erythrocytes. We present a case of rhabdomyolysis caused by Plasmodium knowlesi infection. The patient had fever, myalgia, and muscle weakness 5 days after returning to Japan from Palawan, the Philippines. Blood test revealed thrombocytopenia and an elevated creatine kinase level. Although rhabdomyolysis resolved with fluid therapy, fever of 24-hour cycle continued and thrombocytopenia intensified. On day 7 of illness, Giemsa-stained thin blood smear revealed malaria parasites, with a parasite count of 2

A 63-year-old woman who migrated from Nigeria to the United States was found to have an elevated total serum protein, anemia, and eosinophilia. Serum protein electrophoresis (SPEP) and serum protein immunofixation electrophoresis (SPIFE) demonstrated monoclonal immunoglobulin G (IgG) κ restricted bands (IgG 3,820 mg/dL; κ/λ ratio 4.47), indicative of monoclonal gammopathy of unknown significance (MGUS). A rapid diagnostic test (RDT) for malaria was positive for Plasmodium falciparum (BinaxNOW®; Alere Scarborough Inc., Scarborough, ME). Giemsa-stained blood smears were negative for malarial par

BACKGROUND: Transfusion-transmitted malaria (TTM) is an accidental Plasmodium infection caused by whole blood or a blood component transfusion from a malaria infected donor to a recipient. Infected blood transfusions directly release malaria parasites in the recipient's bloodstream triggering the development of high risk complications, and potentially leading to a fatal outcome especially in individuals with no previous exposure to malaria or in immuno-compromised patients. A systematic review was conducted on TTM case reports in non-endemic areas to describe the epidemiological characteristic

BACKGROUND: Among the Plasmodium species that infect humans, adverse effects of P. falciparum and P. vivax have been extensively studied and reported with respect to poor outcomes particularly in first time mothers and in pregnant women living in areas with unstable malaria transmission. Although, other non-falciparum malaria infections during pregnancy have sometimes been reported, little is known about the dynamics of these infections during pregnancy.
METHODS AND FINDINGS: Using a quantitative PCR approach, blood samples collected from Beninese pregnant women during the first antenatal vis

BACKGROUND: Transfusion-transmitted (TT) malaria is an alternative infection route that has gained little attention from authorities, despite representing a life-threatening condition. There has been no systematic review of this health problem in American countries. The aim of this study was to describe the clinical and epidemiological characteristics of TT malaria in the Americas and identify factors associated with lethality based on the studies published in the literature.
METHODS: Potentially relevant papers in all languages were retrieved from MEDLINE and LILACS. Additional articles were

BACKGROUND: In the past two decades, there has been a reported decline in malaria in Ghana and the rest of the world; yet it remains the number one cause of mortality and morbidity. Human immuno-deficiency virus (HIV) and sickle cell disease (SCD) share a common geographical space with malaria in sub-Saharan Africa and an interaction between these three conditions has been suggested. This study determined the Plasmodium falciparum and non-P. falciparum status of symptomatic and non-symptomatic residents of Mpraeso in the highlands of Kwahu-South district of Ghana based on evidence of current n

BACKGROUND: Malaria is a debilitating disease with high morbidity and mortality in Africa, commonly caused by different species of the genus Plasmodium in humans. Misdiagnosis is a major challenge in endemic areas because of other disease complications and technical expertise of the medical laboratory staff. Microscopic method using Giemsa-stained blood film has been the mainstay of diagnosis of malaria. However, since 1993 when rapid diagnostic test (RDT) kits were introduced, they have proved to be effective in the diagnosis of malaria. This study was aimed at comparing the accuracy of micro

BACKGROUND: Since several malaria parasite species are usually present in a particular area, co-infections with more than one species of Plasmodium are more likely to occur in humans infected in these areas. In many mixed infections, parasite densities of the cryptic species may be low and often not recognized in clinical practice.
CASE PRESENTATION: Two children (3 and 6 years old) adopted recently from Central African Republic were admitted to hospital because of intermittent fever. Thin blood smears stained with Giemsa showed Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmodium malariae co-infection for b

Malaria is an infectious disease of great importance for Public Health, as it is the most prevalent endemic disease in the world, affecting millions of people living in tropical areas of the globe. Kidney involvement is relatively frequent in infections by P. falciparum and P. malariae, but has also been described in the infection by P. vivax. Kidney complications in malaria mainly occur due to hemodynamic dysfunction and immune response. Liver complications leading to hepatomegaly, jaundice and hepatic dysfunction can also contribute to the occurrence of acute kidney injury. Histologic studie
