Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) encompass a broad range of effects caused by prenatal alcohol exposure. In the United States, conservative estimates place the incidence of FASD at a rate of 5 in 100 births. Children with FASD can have morphological afflictions including congenital defects of the brain, spinal cord, heart, eyes, and skeleton, as well as poor formation of facial structures such as the nose and mouth. Cognitive and behavioral abnormalities such as learning disabilities, socio-developmental delays and emotional disorders are also highly prevalent. There is no known cure fo

PURPOSE: Childhood hearing loss (CHL) in need of assisting listening devices require a constant surveillance for hearing loss (HL) progression and adjustment of interventions. Despite advances in aetiological investigations, there are still important gaps in understanding causal determinants and progression patterns of CHL. The aim of this study was to analyze the prevalence and yield of aetiological investigations, and to identify causes associated with HL progression in older children.
METHODS: This descriptive retrospective study included data from 194 children with moderate-profound senor

OBJECTIVES: We proposed a novel neurovascular protection technique based on the intramuscular neurovascular partitions of the upper lip in nasolabial muscle biomechanical bionic surgery for secondary unilateral cleft lip repair. The aim of this study was to describe this modification and evaluate the short-term and long-term outcomes compared with the results of traditional repair.
METHODS: A total of 44 patients with secondary unilateral cleft lips were included in this study, and were divided into 2 groups: 22 patients treated with the traditional repair, and the other 22 treated with the m

PURPOSE: Management of patients with choanal atresia (CA) involves various aspects. While a recent study revealed variability in CA management practices across German Ear, Nose, Throat (ENT) departments, the actual current state of care in Europe and worldwide remains to be elucidated, which was the aim of this study.
METHODS: An online survey was conducted on preoperative diagnostics, surgical procedures, and postoperative care in CA patients. A total of 116 ENT departments from 46 countries and six continents participated.
RESULTS: The median number of CA repairs performed annually across

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), and lymphocyte-to-monocyte ratio (LMR) are associated with disease severity in pediatric patients with lymphatic malformations (LMs).
METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of patients with LM treated at a tertiary pediatric hospital from 2008 to 2022. Exclusion criteria included absence of a complete blood count (CBC; n = 80), age ≥18 years (n = 34), insufficient LM documentation (n = 9), and Congenital Lipomatous Overgrowth, Vascular Malformations, Epidermal Nevis, Spinal/Skele

BACKGROUND: Cleft lip and palate (CLP) is one of the most common congenital craniofacial anomalies, often associated with structural variations in the maxillary sinus and pharyngeal airway. These alterations may predispose individuals to complications such as sinusitis and obstructive sleep apnea. While previous studies have investigated these structures, most relied on two-dimensional imaging, which has inherent limitations for evaluating three-dimensional structures. Moreover, the maxillary sinus and airway have rarely been evaluated together in a unified three-dimensional framework, despite

Presurgical lip, alveolus, and nose approximation (PLANA) is a novel form of presurgical infant orthopedics (PSIO) involving a prefabricated silicone intranasal device combined with hydrocolloid adhesive lip taping. Early studies have demonstrated favorable nasolabial morphologic outcomes using PLANA and a reduction in the burden of care on infants and their caregivers relative to nasoalveolar molding (NAM). However, the efficacy of PLANA in reducing cleft severity to facilitate surgical repair has not been comprehensively assessed from the perspective of the cleft surgeon. This study, therefo

BACKGROUND: Objective assessment of nasal stents following primary cleft rhinoplasty is limited. Using three-dimensional (3D) photogrammetry, this 10-year study quantifies how postoperative nasal stents affect nasolabial morphology after unilateral cleft rhinoplasty.
METHODS: A retrospective review included patients with unilateral cleft lip (uCL) repair from 2013 to 2023. Patient age, surgical technique, nasal stent use, and 1-year postoperative 3D photos were collected. A total of 29 facial landmarks were manually annotated to obtain 15 facial measurements. BACKGROUND: Hereditary Hemorrhagic Telangiectasia (HHT) is an autosomal dominant disorder predisposed to cerebral vascular malformations (CVMs). With conflicting international guidelines on systematic CVM screening in adults, we evaluated the prevalence, clinical relevance, and risks of screening in a national Danish HHT cohort.
METHODS: This combined prospective and retrospective study analyzed data from the Danish HHT Registry. The prospective arm involved systematic non-contrast brain MRI in 202 HHT patients (aged 18-65, no MRI in previous 5 years). The retrospective arm included 119 patie

Amniotic Band Syndrome (ABS) is a congenital disorder which is caused by the entrapment of fetal parts in fibrous amniotic bands while in utero. It is found in 1 in 1200 to 15000 live births. There is no gender or ethnic predisposition. Abnormalities can involve the cranium, face, trunk, abdomen, and extremities. Extremities are the most frequently affected parts, which appear as absence of digits, abnormally developed extremities, or amputations. The prognosis depends on the severity of manifestations, ranging from mild to lethal abnormalities. The purpose of this report is to discuss a rare

This article aims to provide a comprehensive overview of our surgical approach to primary bilateral cleft lip (BCL) repair, with an emphasis on addressing commonly encountered challenges by surgeons. These include lip asymmetry, orbicularis muscle deficiency, superiorly displaced or poorly defined Cupid's bow, a shortened prolabial flap, reduced columellar height, and a blunted nasal tip among other challenges. This article describes a technique that combines 3 key components: the sliding V-cheiloplasty, the step-down technique, and primary rhinoplasty. The sliding V-cheiloplasty is used to cr

Hypochondroplasia is a rare genetic condition that causes disproportionate short stature. This retrospective, real-world, matched-cohort study used electronic health records data from the Clinical Practice Research Datalink Aurum primary care database, linked to Hospital Episode Statistics and Office of National Statistics mortality records, to assess the natural history of hypochondroplasia in England from 1998 to 2019. A total of 549 participants with hypochondroplasia and 2196 matched controls were included. Mean follow-up time was 7.50 years for participants with hypochondroplasia and 11.6

INTRODUCTION: Sellar and suprasellar arachnoid cysts(SACs)are rare lesions that may cause headaches, visual impairment, and endocrine dysfunction. While endoscopic endonasal approaches(EEA)are increasingly preferred, optimal surgical strategy-simple fenestration versus wide cyst-subarachnoid space(SAS)communication-remains debated. This study reports one of the largest single-center series of SACs treated via EEA for SACs and integrates these findings with an updated systematic review of the literature.
METHODS: A retrospective review was conducted on 6178 endoscopic endonasal surgeries perfo

Stickler syndrome, first described by Günnar Stickler in the United States in 1965 as "progressive hereditary arthro-ophthalmopathy", is classified by ophthalmologists as a rare hereditary vitreoretinopathy of connective tissue. Thanks to advances in molecular genetics, different subtypes of the syndrome are now recognized. Its prevalence at birth has been estimated to be between 1 in 7500 and 1 in 10,000. Stickler syndrome is a rare genetic disorder, specifically a multi-system collagenopathy. It is characterized by ocular abnormalities such as severe congenital myopia, cataracts, and retinal

Epidermolysis bullosa acquisita (EBA) and mucous membrane pemphigoid are mucocutaneous blistering disorders that are associated with antibodies that target type VII collagen (anti-col7). There are relatively few studies that closely investigate the clinical phenotype and HLA genotype of patients who are anti-col7 positive. We therefore characterized all patients with anti-col7-positive subepidermal bullous disease that were treated at our centre. In total, 30 patients were identified, 29 had mechanobullous skin lesions and all had oral ulceration. The most common sites for oral lesions were th

RATIONALE: A cross-sectional study employing magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of paranasal sinuses recently showed a high prevalence and extent of chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) in children with primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD). However, longitudinal imaging data on CRS onset and progression are lacking.
OBJECTIVE: To longitudinally evaluate CRS in PCD from infancy through adolescence with MRI.
METHODS: 22 children with PCD (median baseline age 8.5 year, range 0.0-18.0 year) underwent a median of 3 (range 1-9) annual standardized paranasal sinus MRI examinations. MRI were assessed by 2 indepen

The month of March is dedicated to Colon Cancer Awareness. Worldwide, colorectal cancer (CRC) incidence has been on the rise. It is currently the third most common cancer in men (746,000 cases, 10.0% of the total) and the second in women (614,000 cases, 9.2% of the total).1 Arecent meta-analysis reported a 61% risk reduction in CRC incidence with colonoscopy.2 Unlike screening programs for breast and prostate cancers, not only has CRC screening reduced mortality from colon cancer and detected early CRC, it has also decreased the incidence of CRC through detection and removal of pre-cancerous l

Rare genetic respiratory disease has an incidence rate of more than 1:2500 live births in Northern Europe and carries significant disease burden. Early diagnosis improves outcomes, but many individuals remain without a confident genetic diagnosis. Improved and expanded molecular testing methods are required to improve genetic diagnosis rates and thereby improve clinical outcomes. Using primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) as an exemplar rare genetic respiratory disease, we developed a standardized method to identify pathogenic variants using whole transcriptome RNA-sequencing (RNA-seq) of nasal ep

ObjectiveDecision-making for elective cleft lip and nose revisions varies widely, from patient-led decisions to more paternalistic approaches. As these procedures incur additional scarring that may impact future interventions, patients should be equipped to participate in these surgical decisions. We thus developed a decision aid based on international standards, and to ensure methodologic rigor, we sought feedback from other surgeons regarding shared decision-making and potential barriers to adopting the decision aid.DesignThe decision aid was developed based on qualitative patient data, expe
